Most mornings I wake up with a tension headache and very sore jaws from grinding me teeth whilst I sleep. I usually get 4 teeth re-capped every two years or so due to this condition. I understand that grinding releases more mercury vapour than normal. Does anyone out there know if Mercury toxicity actually causes grinding ? Were any of you shocking grinders pre amalgam removal and then got any better post removal ? Please don't say yes just to make me feel better !!

I have read that mercury causes tooth grinding. I was a tooth grinder, according to my dentist, but since amalgam removal 7 months ago, I don't know. My husband never heard me grind my teeth before, and he hasn't noticed it lately. He's a good sleeper.

Yes, teeth grinding is another classic symptom of mercury poisoning. I believe it might be caused directly from the galvanic current in the mouth from the fillings and during sleep, you have no real idea what you're doing with your mouth and I think you directly react to the toxicity and the grinding just happens automatically in sleep. (that's just what I reckon). I used to grind my teeth a lot when I had amalgams apparently and sometimes my Mother would hear it if she came into my room.
I no longer have amalgams and apparently nobody has heard me grind my teeth anymore!! So I don't know what to make of that. Could be the toxicity, but could be the actual current int he mouth itself.
Very hard to say. My cousin, who denies mercury is involved in her health issues, has grinded her teeth for years, has now had to have her teeth capped.
I can't blame everyting on mercury, but I firmly believe it is a cause or contributing factor in many cases.
You may find once you remove the amalgams, that this force that causes unconscious grinding of teeth at night may well begin to subside. I can't be 100% about it, but it does sound like it is related to the galvanic current and general toxicity from the mercury.

I suffer from bruxism and I think that it is related to mercury poisoning. I have to wear an appliance when I sleep to protect my teeth.

I used to wake up with terribly sore jaw muscles and sore teeth. I was truly fearful that I was going to break teeth while grinding them in the night. Once my amalgams were removed, the problem went away instantly. It just stopped beginning with the very night of my removal and never came back. This was just one of my ~17 physical symptoms that evaporated within 24 hours of having my amalgams removed; Not to mention the countless emotional/phycological symptoms. Be encouraged! My sister ground her teeth so badly for years, she spent a fortune getting them all capped and bonded...too bad they didn't take the mercury out instead. She is bipolar and schizophrenic and it is so distressing, she can't hold down a job, and therefore cannot afford to do her teeth. Mercury has caused her so much grief...It is so hard not to be angry at a system that has allowed this to happen and we have absolutely no recourse.

Amen sandi. Yes this stuff has done unthinkable things to human beings. I am suicidal daily now because of the mental effects and not sure whether it was caused by me using alpha lipoic acid a while back, becuase I know that can push more mercury into the brain, especially if a person has had a recent exposure or a redistribution of mercury. I think maybe I have a damaged blood brain barrier and this is why things happen badly to me very easily.
My Dad is trying to have me hang in there by the day, but I am not coping. Going to a doctor or a psychiatrist is not he answer, because anybody that has mental effects from mercury, knows, you can't talk the mercury into being nice and coming out or calming down!
So just want to say that i feel for your sister and though I have no amalgams, I have serious damage from what happened for years and more things done by dentists like cavitations and incompatible dental materials. i cannot afford to get them done, but cannot afford another exposure to mercury vapor in the dental office, so I feel frankly afraid at what is going to happen.
I thank people on here for being so supportive and I can get on and say these things without being labelled a fruitcake.

Mercury causes tooth grinding and from what I have read and experienced it is because of the fact that it blocks magnesium (a very important mineral). Without enough magnesium, your muscles can't relax but are in a constant state of contraction. TMJ and bruxism are simply mg deficiency symptoms. My dentist wanted to have me sleep with a night guard and I had TMJ and muscle tension headaches everyday until I discovered magnesium and they all went away (only return some when I get low levels again) even though I still had my 11 amalgams in at the time.
I read an article that said that

I agree. I know you've done a lot of research on magnesium and it's amazing to learn how completely mercury displaces it.
Thanks for the information.

Thanks Missy I will give it a go. I am taking some Magnesium at the moment but probably not enough. I also get eye twitches which is also a good sign of Magnesium deficiency. Let you know how i go. Ta.
