Cigarette smoking is at an all-time low, but... Just for those who don't know.
About 15 years ago we leased a $15K mercury vapor meter and measured many things including cigarette smoke. We found that this smoke contains huge, huge amounts of mercury; so much mercury that those working with me gasped when they saw it. I don't recall the exact number, but it was well over 100ug/lc.
Keep in mind that 0.3ug/lc can trigger a workplace investigation. 3.0ug/lc can legally shut down a factory.
Where is all this mercury coming from? The fungicide sprayed on tobacco plants, and many other foods like sugarcane, is the source of much mercury in agriculture in the environment. Governments around the world have refused to ban mercury in agriculture for decades despite it's decimating effects on health.
Remember when half of Hollywood movie characters smoked in the 50's, 60's, and beyond?
