---WHEN TRAVELING THE BACKROADS of North Carolina with a friend, we stopped at historical markers, adding time and enjoyment to the trip. Nearing our destination, we drove past a marker that read, "Pon Pon Chapel of Ease." We looked at each other. My friend turned around at the next wide spot in the road to investigate the curious sign.

We discovered a small brick chapel in the backwoods built to serve as temporary worship facilities after a fire destroyed the parent church. In the 1700s, John Wesley was among the noted itinerant preachers who had spoken in the "Pon Pon Chapel of Ease."

We took pictures as late sunlight bored through holes in the once-solid brick facade that stood as a reminder of sermons preached, souls saved, and weddings and funerals and revivals conducted in that hallowed spot spot.

Despite internet searches, we never did discover why it had that curious name. Jesus didn't portend His house would be a place of ease but of prayer. Was it a place of comfort, solace for the parishioners who'd lost their original church building? Was "Chapel of Ease" a reference to a southern version of Psalm 23-- "He maketh me to lie down" under the live oaks and "restoreth my soul" (vv. 2-3 , KJV)?

We may never know the answer to that question, but we'll never stop honoring those who have loved and served Jesus before us, leaving a legacy we aspire to follow.
