Why would one lose their sense of taste and smell?

Mercury binds to - and removes - zinc from the body. Loss of zinc can cause a loss of taste and smell. This is why seniors with dentures often experience this symptom, namely because dentures contain mercury. This is the same reasons seniors often have tinnitus and loss of hearing.
