--The Peril of Selfishness ~~

--"Do nothing from selfishness or empty conceit, but with humility of mind regard one another more important than yourselves."

~~~There was once a farmer, the story goes, who was unhappy about the yield of his corn. When he heard of a highly recommended new seed corn, he bought some and later harvested a crop so abundant that his neighbors asked to buy some of his seed. But the farmer refused, fearing the results of competition.
The new seed produced a smaller crop the second year, and the third-year crop was even worse. Then the farmer realized that his prize corn was being pollinated by the lower-grace corn in his neighbors' fields.
Selfishness is a recipe for misery. It stunts spiritual growth, hinders prayer, stirs dissension between people and causes separation from God.
A sign in a tailoring and dyeing shop bore these words: "I live to dye; I dye to live. The more I dye, the more I live. The more I live the more I dye." Read these words aloud, and you will hear an important spiritual truth. The more we experience death to selfishness, the more fully Jesus Christ is able to manifest His life in us. Notice Paul's testimony in Galatians 2:20: "I am crucified with Christ; nevertheless I live; yet not I, but Christ liveth in me." This kind of living is possible for every believer by full appropriation of all that is in Christ.
It's easier to recognize selfishness in other people than in ourselves. Too often we act like two children wanting to ride a tricycle. "If one of us would get off, I could ride better!" We need to be humble enough to admit that self-centeredness is sin. Let's enjoy the blessings of God in Christ by dethroning self and enthroning Christ. ~~
~~A man is selfish not for pursuing his own good, but for pursuing his own good at the expense of another. ~~
