EMF's concern me aswell, but in my opinion, EMF's from household appliances shouldn't worry us as much as those of electric pylons, nuclear power stations etc.
Some people have homes next to pylons (those huge towers that conduct electricity) and while I don't know what they are like in America, here they generate huge EMF's. I wouldn't like to live closer to one. The closest one we have here is about a mile or more away.
As to household appliances, I think (short of not having any) the best thing to do is keep certain distances between yourself and the appliance.i.e. an arms length between you and your computer monitor, a good distance between yourself and the tv, and to put all appliances off when you are not using them. So long as an appliance is plugged in, there will be an EMF. It only goes when the appliance is pulled out of the plug.
Anything held close to the body gives more exposure to EMF - i.e. a hair dryer. There is a huge debate on cell phones. I personally only use mine when I'm travelling.
It's a good idea to know what is within at least a meter of your bed and behind any walls (i.e. some houses have generators or power sources right behind the wall where the bed is). Keep an electric clock at least an arms length from your pillow and don't use electric blankets ( I used to have one when I had braces and amalgams, so probably contributed to my toxicity).
I've read there are ways of deflecting the EMF from around an electric meter, but I can't remember exactly what it was. I sleep above ours, which is a source of concern to me, but I thin there is enough distance between my bedroom and the meter. It's not ideal, but my room is so small it's not possible to really put the bed anywhere else. But when I do, eventually, get my own place, I'm going to becareful to make sure I'm not above any meters or power entry points (EMF is higher on power entry points i.e. the cable carrying electricity into the house).
I hope that helps. You can get an EMF reader and check for "hotspots" in the house, and if you find your bed or sofa is in one, then you can move them to an area that is safe.
