-BIBLE MEDITATION: "The LORD hath appeared of old unto me, saying, Yea, I have loved thee with an everlasting love: therefore with lovingkindness have I drawn thee." Jeremiah 31:3
-DEVOTIONAL THOUGHT: George Matheson, a student at the University of Scotland, was taken with an eye disease. He was losing his eyesight. A beloved professor came to him and said, "George, the doctors told me that it's my responsibility to tell you that in three days you will be blind. If there is any face you want to look upon, do it now." George wrote to his beloved fiancée and asked, "Would you come to my side? I want to look into your face before I go blind." She wrote back, "If you are going blind, I don't want to be married to you" and broke the engagement.
George was crushed, but he went on to graduate from the university at age 19. Out of that pain, he wrote one of the most beautiful hymns ever written: "O Love that will not let me go, I rest my weary soul in Thee; I give Thee back the life I owe, that in Thine ocean depths its flow may richer, fuller be. O Light that followest all my way, I yield my flickering torch to Thee; My heart restores its borrowed ray, that in Thy sunshine's glow its day may brighter, fairer be. O Joy that seekest me through pain, I cannot close my heart to Thee; I trace the rainbow through the rain, and feel the promise is not vain, that morn shall tearless be." Though blind, he became a mighty minister of the Gospel of Christ. This crushing experience allowed him to touch the world.
-ACTION POINT: The words to this hymn came to George in a total of five minutes, and he never had to go back and edit them. We all experience painful losses in our lives. How we choose to handle them is key to what happens next.

Jesus said, "I am the way, the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me." [John 14:6]
For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord. ----Romans 6:23
With the economy the way it is today, so many people are experiencing the horror of financial bankruptcy. In fact, I don’t know that I’ve ever met so many people who have filed for bankruptcy as I’ve met over the past few years.
But there’s something that’s worse than financial bankruptcy, and that’s spiritual bankruptcy. That’s because the problem we have spiritually can’t be fixed in the court of law. We don’t have a system where some official can dissolve your debts. No, the problem of spiritual debt is much, much worse.
So what do we do? We’re in debt over our heads and we’re drowning. Well, more powerful than any creditor is the cross of Christ. Jesus saw the debt you owed because of your sin, paid it Himself through His death, and fills your account by giving you eternal life!
Yes, spiritual bankruptcy is detrimental, but the remedy – eternal life through faith in Jesus’ death and resurrection – is wonderful. So thank God today for sending Jesus to take your debt away, and givimg you the incredible gift of eternal life!
-SOLVE THE PROBLEM OF SPIRITUAL BANKRUPTCY BY TRUSTING IN JESUS TO PAY YOUR DEBT AND GIVE YOU ETERNAL LIFE!

-Deuteronomy 10:12-22 ----- What does the LORD your God require of you, but...to walk in all His ways and to love Him. --Deuteronomy 10:12-- ---------- When it comes to love, the important thing to know is that all love starts with God (1 John 4:19). As Moses told the Israelites, God delighted in them to love them, and because of that they were to love others, even strangers. God's intent is that the people who receive His love will become the conduit of His love to others.
Apart from God---who Himself is love--none of us could truly love or be loved (1 John 4:7-8). -------- He who does not love does not know God, for God is love. ---- -1 John 4:8

One illustration I like to use when describing the Spirit’s work in our lives is to set a glove on a table next to a Bible. Then I’ll tell the glove, “Go ahead and pick up that Bible.” Of course, the glove can’t do that because it has no life. It doesn’t matter how passionate I am about telling that glove to open the Bible, it won’t do it. It’s helpless.
But if I pick up that glove and put my hand it in, then the glove can do whatever my hand can do. The dexterity of my hand becomes the dexterity of that glove. The strength of my hand becomes the glove’s strength.
Apart from the Spirit of God in our lives, we’re just like that glove, spiritually speaking. We don’t have the ability on our own to obey God. But when the Spirit comes into our lives, He’s like a hand in a glove. His strength and power becomes our strength and power!
Many people try to live spiritually like a glove without a hand. They follow the latest self-help trend to make themselves better, but they are always left unsatisfied. Let God’s Spirit fill you like a hand in a glove and you’ll discover renewed spiritual strength!

-Americans celebrate Independence Day with magnificent fireworks, the show culminating in a barrage of the biggest, brightest display that we call "The Grand Finale."
The writer of Hebrews sends up a grand finale of Bible 'object lessons'. He reminds us in chapter 11 of God's people throughout the Old Testament, many of them flawed and imperfect, all "commended for their faith" (11:39) yet empty-handed at the end of their days because the Lord had something better for them: eternity with Him.
Our commitment to Christ is serious. What He wants above all from us is not a checked-off list of good deeds we've done. He wants our hearts, hearts that return to Him again and again in our failures...hearts so full of gratitude for all He's done that we want to live every moment for Him.
The fireworks in our hearts start now as we follow hard after Christ. But the "grand finale" still awaits us: "No eye has seen, no ear has heard, no mind has conceived what God has prepared for those who love Him." (1 Corinthians 2:9)

You see, Jesus said that all power, authority, and dominion is given unto Him in heaven and earth (see Matthew 28:18-20). Dominion was first given to man, but man gave it over to the devil in the Garden of Eden. Jesus received it back from the Father and gave that authority to each of us.

--How do we flourish in the midst of tragedy? Remember Joseph? Genesis records his story. It says his brothers “hated him.” They put him into a pit, leaving him for dead. And then they covered up what they’d done. Joseph’s story got worse before it got better. Abandonment led to enslavement, then entrapment, and finally imprisonment. He was sold out. Mistreated. Yet he never gave up. His heart never hardened; his resolve never vanished.
He not only survived—he thrived! Speaking years later to the brothers who had betrayed him he said, “As for you…you meant evil against me, but God meant it for good in order to bring about this present result” (Genesis 50:20).

Don’t equate the presence of God with a good mood or a pleasant temperament. God is near whether you are happy or not. But do quarry from your Bible a list of the deep qualities of God, and press them to your heart. My list reads like this:
He is still sovereign. He still knows my name. Angels still respond to His call. God is still faithful. He is not caught off guard. He uses everything for His glory and my ultimate good.
Lay hold of the unchanging character of God. Pray your pain out. Cry out to God! He understands, He's been there! His promise is, "I will never leave you nor forsake you. NEVER! Even Jesus offered up prayers with what Hebrews 5:7 describes as “loud cries and tears.” Your family may be gone. Your supporters may have left.
But God has not budged! His promise still stands: “I am with you and will watch over you wherever you go” (Gen. 28:15) "Call on Me and I will show you things that you do not know about. I am God!" 'Is anything too hard for Me?' (Of course not, we shout!)
Talk to Him. The Lord is on call 24/7's. Tell Him you love Him and need Him. 'Jesus is as close as the mention of His name.'

We are born spiritually blind in sin and separated from God. The devil, the world, and our own sinful self would have to stay in the darkness of sin. How are we to believe in something we can't see?
The apostle John did see Jesus, the Son of God. when Jesus walked this earth, preaching, teaching, healing, raising people from the dead, suffering, dying on the cross, and rising for our justification. John now testifies of Jesus for our consolation and salvation.
Through the power of the Holy Spirit, we live by faith, not sight, and have confidence to be led safely through the obstacles of sin and death. We are kept in the saving grace of our Lord Jesus Christ as we cross the finish line to our eternal home. ~~

--WHILE VISITING Athens, Greece, I came across a street fair with a live band and a variety of booths. At one booth, a woman offered me a free shirt, hat, and pin. As a budget backpacker, I gladly accepted. The next day, I wore the free T-shirt; but as I set out to explore the city, I quickly became self-conscious. I had no idea the meaning of the Greek writing scrawled across the front of my shirt. But all the locals would know. What if I was wearing a message I didn't support? Toward the end of the day, I ended up chatting with a shopkeeper and cashier. One of them told me, "I like your shirt." I replied that I didn't know what the words on the shirt meant.
The cashier translated the message as, "There are a lot of adventures to be had in life. Drugs shouldn't be one of them." Reassured that my shirt's message was one I supported, I spent the rest of the day feeling bold instead of self-conscious.
This experience made me think about how often I wear a message without realizing it. Though not as obvious as writing on a shirt, the way I treat others, the words I say--and even my facial expressions--send messages to others. I want that message to reflect that Christ lives in me. ~~

~~Many people long for peace, and a few minutes of silence may soothe our minds. But the Bible teaches that real peace--peace with God--comes from His Son. The apostle Paul said, "Therefore, since we have been justified through faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ" (Romans 5:1). Without Christ, we are enemies of God because of our sin. Thankfully, accepting Jesus's sacrifice reconciles us to God and ends the hostility that existed between us (Colossians 1:19-21).
Having peace with God does not ensure problem-free living. Jesus told His followers, "In this world you will have trouble," but He also said, "In me you may have peace" (John 16:33). Because of Christ, the true peace of God can fill our hearts (Colossians 3:15). ~

~~~I have a special friend who has impressed me with the profound and sacrificial love she and her husband have lavished on their children, particularly a former prodigal son.
"[My son] took us on a twelve-year journey into this world of prodigaldom," she says. She founded a worldwide day of prayer for prodigals, which began as an effort by this mom to pray for her son--who has returned to his faith.
The biblical prodigal son said callously to his father, "I want my share of your estate now before you die" (Luke 15:12 /NLT). After receiving his inheritance early, he moved away and squandered his inheritance. Not until he lost everything did he return home and confess his sins to his father, who welcomed him with open arms.
"You don't give up because you do love that wayward one," my friend says. We learn that from God, "who keeps on loving, keeps on believing, keeps on forgiving."
Praise God for His love for all of us...even the prodigals. He patiently calls, "Come back to life! I am waiting for you with open arms. No matter what you may have done, I forgive you." ---ODB/RD --"Prodigal"// Casting Crowns ~~ (lyrics)<https://youtu.be/_PT5feZZUuU> ~~~~~~~~~
~~IN 2014, I learned that I had a brain tumor. After five hours of surgery, doctors determined the tumor to be inoperable. Instead, I had to undergo radiation to shrink the tumor in an effort to prevent further damage and growth.
This was a devastating blow. At age 80, I had lived a full, healthy, and independent life. Now I was forced to make adjustments because of permanent damage to my eyesight, and to my pituitary, adrenal, and other systems. I could no longer drive, which altered my formerly active lifestyle--especially in my church and community activities. But shortly after my return home from the radiation treatments, some women from my church volunteered to drive me anywhere I needed to go. They have done this for more than three years, and in the process we have become close friends--enriching one another's lives.
Through my struggle and the way my community has cared for me, God has taught me the valuable lesson from Galatians 6:2 about the need for for interdependence in Christian community. Now I more fully appreciate the sacredness of relationships. I have realized that life is short and that I should make haste to love, be quick to show kindness, nad be eager to help others.~~
~~In God's economy, you must go down into the valley of grief before you can scale the heights of spiritual glory. You must become tired and weary of living alone before you seek and find the fellowship of Christ. You must come to the end of self before you begin to live. The mourning of inadequacy is a weeping that catches the attention of God. The Bible says, "The Lord is nigh unto them that are of a broken heart; and saveth such as be of a contrite spirit"-[Psalm 51:17] ~~ The happiest day of my life was when I realized that my own ability, my own goodness, and my own morality was insufficient in the sight of God; and I publicly and openly acknowledged my need of Christ. I am not exaggerating when I say that my mourning was turned to joy, and my sighing into singing.
"You know what surprised me? They ask for Christmas cards to send to their families." Military exchanges, particularly in combat zones didn't sell cards.
A few of us were paper crafters and decided to get together to make cards. The first year, 2016, we made 550, which Jean sent to troops in the Middle East through the Any Soldier program. Last year, we sent almost 7,000! Our cards reached military personnel in Kuwait, Afghanistan and Syria.
Our original group not only still gathers to make cards; we also meet with churches, civic groups, sororities and other people who want to help deployed service members make the holiday season a little brighter for their loved ones. At our main even last year, we had more than 50 people making cards on one day.
You can pitch in! We take size A2 cards (41/4 inches by 51/2 inches) with an envelope; no glitter is allowed, but twine, small ribbons and foil paper are fine. Send cards to Making Cards for Our Troops, 3123 Riva Road, Riva, MD 21140, Unit #74 by November 1, so they arrive in time for the service members to send them back home for the holidays. --I prided myself on being a good neighbor. My husband, Charles, and I knew everyone who lived along our rural road. Walking that road now, I thought about how we all relied on each other. We picked up mail for people on vacation, lent out tools, watched each other's children. Each house I passed held a friendly association.
Except Kelly's.
It hadn't always been this way. At one time, Kelly and I had had a good relationship. Our children were close in age and often played together. Our husbands were buddies. I never went by her house without waving or stopping to chat if I saw her outside.
Not anymore. If Kelly was out in her yard when I walked or drove by, I acted as if I didn't see her. As if there were a big wall between us. At first it felt satisfying to let Kelly know what I thought of her. Today the sight of her house just made me sad. How did things go wrong?
It had all started with a cat. A stray who turned up in my driveway. That wasn't unusual. I already had two stray cats I'd adopted as well as a dog. But this cat was aggressive. He drove my own cats away from their food bowls on the porch and hissed at me when I tried to shoo him off.
Imagine my surprise a few days later when Kelly announced she was taking in the cat. "I think he's sweet," she said.
I didn't even know that Kelly liked cats. She'd never had one before as far as I knew. Living with Kelly didn't make the cat any friendlier. He constantly showed up on our porch, stealing our cats' food and picking fights. "That cat's out of control," I said to Kelly angrilly over the phone one day. "I've about had it."
He's always perfectly sweet with us!" Kelly said, getting defensive. "I had no idea you disliked him so much."
That was the first brick in the wall between us. Things just got worse from there. We never talked about that phone call, but I couldn't stop thinking about it. Maybe I could have been more diplomatic about that cat, but Kelly should have been more sorry. If anyone was going to apologize, it should be her! The tension grew until one night I got my own angry phone call. After midnight!
"Hello?" I said, half-asleep. "Your dog has been barking all night!" Kelly said. "He woke us up. Please keep him quiet!" "What?" I said. "My dog isn't barking." "Just keep him quiet," she said and hung up.
"Who was that?" Charles muttered. "What time is it?" "It's the middle of the night," I said. "But Kelly thought it was a good time to accuse our dog of waking her up. Do you hear him barking?" "No," Charles said, already falling back asleep.
"That's it. I'm never speaking to Kelly again," I thought. And I hadn't. Not in months. And I felt pretty miserable about it. Not to mention petty. What must God think of all this? Some good neighbor I am, I thought, drawing closer to Kelly's house. It hurt my heart and my spirit to admit it.
This time, as I walked by Kelly's house, my feet slowed, almost involuntarily. I allowed myself to turn toward it. Just as I did, I saw Kelly come out to her driveway. For a second, we just stared at each other. I wanted so much for this wall between us to come down. She looks just as miserable as I feel, I thought. I could sense God nudging me to do what was right. How I needed that nudge!
I swallowed hard and walked toward Kelly. I'll ask her if we can start over..I'll tell her how much I've missed her... how much our friendship means to me..."
Words weren't necessary. As soon as we got close enough, Kelly and I found ourselves opening our arms and hugging each other close. It was no coincidence that she'd stepped out onto her driveway at the very moment I was walking by. No coincidence at all that our friendship had been renewed. ~~ ~~~~~~ --"Above all, keep fervent in your love for one another, because love covers a multitude of sins." --[1 PETER 4:8]. ~ ~~~~~~~~~~~~
--TANKS BE TO GOD~~
--REAL men Fix their own toilets. Especially when they don't have money for a plumber. I set the replacement tank on the floor of the bathroom with a thump. It's a simple job, I thought. Just disconnect the water supply, unscrew the bolts on the old tank with channel lock pliers and replace it with the new one. I didn't need to hire a plumber. I could do it myself.
I eyed my opponent--the toilet that wouldn't stop running--tucked into the corner of the bathroom. There wasn't much room for a full-grown man to work, but I was determined. I dropped to my knees and wedged myself into the space between the toilet bowl and the wall. With my left cheek smooshed against cold porcelain and my right arm bent in half, it was hard to get enough leverage to unscrew the bold attaching the hose to the spigot. Whoever installed this toiled must have been as strong as a gorilla, I thought.
An hour later, I was covered in sweat and grime. All my limbs had fallen asleep. I wasn't feeling so rugged and manly anymore. But I would not be beaten by a toilet. I changed my direction, my angle, my grip. The hose still wouldn't budge.
As the job got uglier, so did my mood. Every frustration in my life came to mind. The broken toilet. The badly designed bathroom. The lack of many for a plumber. Along-ago argument I had with a friend. Ever single thing I didn't like about my job, my house, my life. Once I got started, there was nothing I wasn't angry about.
I gritted my teeth, bore down on the channel lock. Nothing happened.
Oh God!! He was the one thing I hadn't thought about. I imagined Him watching me now. Shame washed over me. "I'm sorry," I said, thinking of my arrogance, my bitterness. "Please, God, I said, "I need You. And not just to fix this toilet."
I took a deep breath and gave the channel lock pliers another twist. The hose loosened effortlessly. Real men, it turns out, know when to ask God for help. Yes, tanks and thanks be to God!
