Stop the USMCA's Coming North American Union

On Monday, April 29, 2019, Mexico's Senate of the Republic passed a highly anticipated labor reform bill that U.S. lawmakers regard as essential to the implementation of the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA). The labor bill makes it easier for workers in Mexico to unionize, elect their own union leaders, vote to approve work contracts by secret ballot, and in turn to earn higher wages, which U.S. lawmakers hope will prevent the further outsourcing of American jobs to Mexico. However, the bill may also force workers to join a union against their will. Nevertheless, Rep.  Bill Pascrell (D-N.J.), a member of the House Ways and Means Committee, which covers trade agreements, described Mexico's labor reforms as "a major step" that "could reduce one incentive for American companies to outsource jobs — a central problem in the old NAFTA."

During his rally in Green Bay, Wisconsin, on April 27, 2019, President Trump said that Congress would introduce a USMCA implementation bill in 30 days. Now that Mexico has passed these labor reforms, it may not be long before a USMCA Implementation Act is introduced in Congress. Therefore, a vote in Congress on the USMCA could happen in early summer of this year. If Congress approves a USMCA Implementation Act, Mexico's Senate of the Republic is expected to ratify it as a treaty, followed by Canada ratifying it towards the end of year in order for it to enter into force on January 1, 2020.

To read more about Mexico's new labor reform and how it paves the way for U.S. passage of the USMCA in Congress and an eventual North American Union, modeled after the European Union, read Christian Gomez's article, "Mexico’s Collective Bargaining Law Paves Way for USMCA and North American Union," published online on April 30, 2019.

Please phone your representative (202-225-3121) and Senators (202-224-3121) and ask them to oppose and vote NAY on any USMCA implementation bill, because it would further consolidate the economic integration of North America and threaten our national sovereignty and independence. Use the information in "Mexico’s Collective Bargaining Law Paves Way for USMCA and North American Union" (linked to in the previous paragraph) for additional talking points, if desired.

Then, please send an email to your representative and senators with the same message.

Thanks.
