---- readingthepaper --FACEBOOK LIES AGAIN! WILL YOU STILL TRUST MARK ZUCKERBERG, CEO OF FACEBOOK?

*** star Facebook Is Facing Another Privacy Issue
It’s accused of spying on users.
---By David Meyer 5:33 AM EDT

Facebook has been hit with another data-sharing scandal, again over the access that it gives or gave third parties to the data not only of its users, but also of their friends.

According to a New York Times report, the social network has been sharing way too much data with mobile device manufacturers such as Apple, Samsung, BlackBerry and Amazon—to an extent that could constitute a violation of Facebook’s 2011 privacy deal with the Federal Trade Commission (FTC.)

-- star Here’s what you need to know.
Is this like the Cambridge Analytica thing?

It’s certainly connected. Cambridge Analytica was able to get its hands on the data of so many Facebook users—up to 87 million—because Facebook used to make it easy for third parties to get data on Facebook users and everyone with whom those users were connected.

Privacy advocates always thought this was a bad idea, and in 2015 Facebook (fb, -0.25%) changed its policies to cut off this access—the Cambridge Analytica data-scraping took place in 2014.

However, it now seems Facebook did not cut off this access for everyone, so millions of people’s data was—and indeed is—still being shared without their knowledge.
Who still has access and why?

Many makers of phones and tablets allow people to use Facebook without actually opening the Facebook app, by integrating some of its functionality into their own software. This means that the software of companies including Apple, Amazon, Samsung, Microsoft and BlackBerry gets to plug into Facebook’s systems and access data that does not belong to the specific person who’s using that software.

The Times piece uses the example of BlackBerry’s Hub app, which aims to consolidate a user’s messages from various platforms—from Facebook notifications to Gmail emails—into one interface. A Times reporter logged into his Facebook account on that app, gaining access not only to detailed information about 556 friends, including sensitive stuff about religious and political leanings, but also to identifying information on 294,258 friends-of-friends.

star The issue here is not that a Facebook user can access data about friends and friends-of-friends—it’s that they’re giving a non-Facebook company’s software access to that information.
What does that software do with the data?

The aforementioned reporter used an older BlackBerry device to access all that information—apparently BlackBerry’s more recent, Android-based phones “do not use the same private channels,” per the Times article. A BlackBerry (bb, -1.69%) spokesperson told the paper that the Canadian firm “did not collect or mine the Facebook data of [its] customers.”

Apple (aapl, +1.81%) said it stopped giving iPhones this sort of access to Facebook last September. Microsoft (msft, +2.12%) said any data its software got from Facebook stayed on users’ devices and was not uploaded to its own servers. Samsung and Amazon did not respond to the Times’ questions.

Facebook admitted that some of these “service provider” partners did store the data of users and their friends on their own servers.
Is this a problem?
star It’s potentially a very big problem for Facebook.

Firstly, it may violate the “consent decree” deal that Facebook struck with the FTC in 2011. That settlement followed complaints from users that Facebook wasn’t allowing them to keep their information on the social network private—Facebook promised to get consent from users before sharing their data with third parties, and to avoid making deceptive claims about its privacy practices.

The Cambridge Analytica scandal already led the FTC to investigate whether Facebook broke this settlement. Now this new scandal could add fuel to the fire, as the data being shared with device manufacturers includes information that people set to private.

Facebook’s take on this is that the device manufacturers are “service providers” rather than third parties of the sort where consent would be needed to share information. It doesn’t think it’s violated the FTC deal, but former FTC official Jessica Rich told the Times that “under Facebook’s interpretation, the exception swallows the rule.”

Then there’s the fact that CEO Mark Zuckerberg told Congress in March that Facebook’s users have “complete control over who sees [their data] and how [they] share it.”

followtherules Former Facebook privacy compliance official Sandy Parakilas, now a bigtime Facebook critic, told the paper that the device partnerships had been “flagged internally as a privacy issue,” and it was “shocking” that the data-sharing is still going on.

Meanwhile, Facebook said it started winding down the partnerships in April, as they were no longer needed to serve users.

“These partners signed agreements that prevented people’s Facebook information from being used for any other purpose than to recreate Facebook-like experiences. And we approved the Facebook experiences they built,” said Facebook’s product partnerships chief, Ime Archibong, in a blog post. “Contrary to claims by the New York Times, friends’ information, like photos, was only accessible on devices when people made a decision to share their information with those friends. We are not aware of any abuse by these companies.”

There’s one extra issue to worry about here: the European Union’s General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR). It only came into force around 10 days ago, but if Facebook is still sharing people’s data without their consent—especially sensitive personal data about things like religious beliefs—then it could be in big trouble in the EU. The company has already been been the subject of GDPR privacy complaints, despite the new legal regime’s tender age.

Why doesn't Mark Zuckerberg know how to reply a simple, "Yes", or "No"? He's so concerned that what he says is being shared with the whole world. AND IT IS! AND SO IS YOUR DATA! BEWARE! Many people were upset about posts made, and Zuckerberg said, "It's in the archives and we can not do anything about those posts now." So, we see that he is now contradicting himself!

It never ceases to amaze me how people such as Senator Kamalar Harris can make Mark Zuckerberg stutter! Also Senator John Kennedy tells him, "Your F Book User Agreement SUCKS!" And it does. Please beware of joining up with this place. Your Data is shared.
I know for a fact from a few friends and family members their pictures were switched with other peoples profile pictures and names were changed. IT IS NOT SAFE!

--Mark Zuckerberg really has some work to do! More people use his website for personal messages as well. I was originally told it began several years ago basically for College Students to stay in contact with family out of town. Now look where it is! Friends down the street from each other use it just to 'TALK'! It should either be better organized or as several people have said in the youtube website, BE BANNED! It is out of control! I am so glad to be off there. People, please beware of what you share, IT IS NOT PRIVATE! Read the below post and see what you think afterwards. Thank you. (Article from 'MEDIA BUZZ")

--- spy ---FACEBOOK SHUT DOWN MORE THAN 100 accounts POSSIBLY LINKED TO INTERFERENCE WITH ELECTIONS [11/6/2018]

--BEWARE OF FACE BOOK. THERE IS NO PRIVACY THERE! YOUR DATA IS SHARED!
--- smirk
Facebook removed more than 100 accounts that it believes may have been involved in “coordinated inauthentic behavior” ahead of Tuesday’s midterm elections.

Nathaniel Gleicher, head of cybersecurity policy for the social media giant, said in a statement Monday that law enforcement contacted the company on Sunday about activity linked to foreign entities. Facebook has since identified and removed 30 Facebook accounts and 85 Instagram accounts.

Almost all of the Facebook pages were in French or Russian, Gleicher added, and the Instagram accounts were mainly in English and focused on either celebrity content or political debate.

“Typically, we would be further along with our analysis before announcing anything publicly,” he said. “But given that we are only one day away from important elections in the U.S., we wanted to let people know about the action we’ve taken and the facts as we know them today.”

Facebook had removed 82 pages linked to Iran late last month for the same reason. Offering more detail, the company said that groups and accounts posed as U.S. or UK citizens, posting content on divisive topics like race relations and immigration. In August, another 652 pages also linked to Iran were taken down.

The fight to battle foreign disinformation has raged since efforts to influence a variety of elections worldwide, including the 2016 presidential election, came to light.

Facebook has since tried to clamp down on nefarious foreign actors. In September, Facebook set up a “war room” in its California headquarters dedicated to rooting out disinformation related to the midterms.

“We see this as probably the biggest companywide reorientation since our shift from desktops to mobile phones,” Samidh Chakrabarti, who’s in charge of elections and civic engagement at Facebook, told The New York Times.

Last month, the company announced that it planned to ban fake news about voting requirements and fake reports of violence or long lines at polling stations.

----- mine HOUSING DEPARTMENT SLAPS FACEBOOK With DISCRIMINATION CHARGE~~
--(3/28/2019)

HUD Sues Facebook Over Housing Discrimination / Secretary Ben Carson

Facebook, which has been accused recently of everything short of disappearing Jimmy Hoffa, is in more hot water. The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) announced today that it is charging Facebook with violating the Fair Housing Act. HUD said the huge social media platform had encouraged and enabled and thus has caused housing discrimination.

The Charge, filed though HUD's office of Administrative Law Judges states that, " Because of the way [Facebook] designed its advertising platform, ads for housing and housing-related services are shown to large audiences that are severely biased based on characteristics protected by the Act, such as audiences of tens of thousands of users that are nearly all men or nearly all women. "

HUD says Facebook charges advertisers for the ability to micro-target ad to users based on the millions of bits of personal data it has collected. Facebook promotes and distinguishes its advertising platform by proclaiming that "most online advertising tools have limited targeting options . . . like location, age, gender, interests and potentially a few others.. . But Facebook is different. People on Facebook share their true identities, interests, life events and more."

The charge says the company, which also owns Instagram and Messenger, holds out its advertising platform as a powerful resource for advertisers in many industries, including housing and housing-related services and promotes its platform with "success stories," "including stories from a housing developer, a real estate agency, a mortgage lender, a real-estate-focused marketing agency, and a search tool for rental housing."

Facebook provides its advertiser with tools for selecting an ad's eligible audience, i.e. users who have the attributes the advertiser desires and then Facebook chooses which users will actually be shown the ad. During the next phase advertisers can define which users or types of users can see the ad. Tools include a toggle button to exclude men or women from seeing an ad, a search box to exclude people who don't speak a specific language, live in a certain area, or include or exclude users with specific attributes such as "women in the workforce," "moms of grade school kids," "foreigners," "Puerto Rico Islanders," or people interested in "parenting," "accessibility," "service animal," "Hijab Fashion," or "Hispanic Culture." Facebook also has offered advertisers the ability to limit the audience of an ad by selecting to include only those classified as, for example, "Christian" or "Childfree."

Further, HUD says Facebook allegedly uses machine learning and other prediction techniques to classify and group users to project each user's likely response to a given ad, and in doing so, may recreate groupings defined by their protected class.

The charge follows an investigation by HUD of a complaint initiated by the HUD Secretary last August. At that time the Department of Justice, joined by HUD, also filed a statement of interest in the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of New York (SDNY) on behalf of a number of private litigants challenging Facebook's advertising platform.

HUD General Counsel Paul Compton said, "Even as we confront new technologies, the fair housing laws enacted over half a century ago remain clear-discrimination in housing-related advertising is against the law. Just because a process to deliver advertising is opaque and complex doesn't mean that it's exempts Facebook and others from our scrutiny and the law of the land. Fashioning appropriate remedies and the rules of the road for today's technology as it impacts housing are a priority for HUD."

HUD seeks to address unresolved fair housing issues regarding Facebook's advertising practices and to obtain appropriate relief for the harm Facebook caused and continues to cause. The Charge will be heard by a United States Administrative Law Judge unless any party to the Charge elects to have the case heard in federal district court.
