--MY father has always had a direction sense I've envied. He's just instinctively known where north, south, east and west are. It's like he was born with that sense. And he's always been right. Until the night he wasn't.
That was the night my father got lost. He and my mother attended an event in an unfamiliar town and left after dark. He was convinced he knew the way back to the highway, but he didn't. He got turned around, then confused, and ultimately frustrated. My mother reassured him, "I know it's hard, but ask your phone for directions. It's okay."
For the first time in his life that I'm aware of, my seventy-six-year-old father asked for directions. From his phone.
The psalmist was a man with a wealth of life experience. But the psalms reveal moments when it appears David felt lost spiritually and emotionally. Psalm 143 contains one of those times. The great king's heart was dismayed (V.4). He was in trouble (V.11). So he paused and prayed, "Show me the way I should go" (V.8). And far from counting on a phone, the psalmist cried out to the Lord, "For to You I entrust my life" (V.8). If the "man after [God's] own heart" (1 Samuel 13:14) felt lost from time to time, it's a given we too will need to turn to God for His directions.~~

--A coworker confessed to me that he didn't think he was "Jesus material." I listened as he described what he called his "comfortable, narcissistic" life, and how it didn't satisfy him. "But here's my problem, I've been trying to be good, even caring, but it isn't working. It seems that the very things I want to do, I can't do, and the things I want to stop doing, I just keep doing."

Paul's words of frustration often resonate with both pre-Christians and Christians who find themselves trying to be good enough to deserve God but falling short.

-BETWEEN two farms near Valleyview, Alberta, you can find two parallel fences, only two feet apart, running for a half mile. Why are there two fences when one would do?
Two farmers, Paul and Oscar, had a disagreement that erupted into a feud. Paul wanted to build a fence between their land and split the cost, but Oscar was unwilling to contribute. Since he wanted to keep cattle on his land, Paul went ahead and built the fence anyway. After the fence was completed, Oscar said to Paul, "I see we have a fence."
"What do you mean 'we'?" Paul replied. "I got the property line surveyed and built the fence two feet into my land. That means some of my land is outside the fence. And if any of your cows set foot on my land, I'll shoot it."- Oscar knew Paul wasn't joking, so when he eventually decided to use the land adjoining Paul's for pasture, he was forced to build another fence, two feet away.
Oscar and Paul are both gone now, but their double fence stands as a monument to the high price we pay for stubbornness.~~
