Hi Sandi.
I had a root canal tooth extracted a few weeks ago and the bone beneath cleaned. The dentist I saw before wanted to save the tooth and crown it, but my new dentist shared my opinion that it was best extracted and cleaned the old infection I had in it away.
It's still early days, but I am beginning to feel more like my "old" self before I had the root canal done and I have had improvement in OCD symptoms. I feel it has made a difference, even though I still have about 8 amalgams left, but this root canal filling was the biggest chunk of mercury in my mouth.
It was quite a procedure as first I had to have the filling extracted (using all safeties), then he split up the tooth and removed it, then he cleaned the socket, then the bone. Took about 90 mins. I was sore for a few days, but the hole has almost gone now.
I don't like to advise anyone, so all I can say is that I'm glad I have had mine out (I only had one root canal filling), and if anyone does want to have theirs out, to make sure it's with a dentist who knows what he/she is doing and is willing to explain procedures and inform of risks, if there are any (depending which tooth etc).
