Wound Care and Hyperbarics - An Underdeveloped Branch of Healing!
Dr. Tyler Sexton is an articulate and inspiring spokesperson for a technology and a patient population suffering from unhealing chronic wounds.
We are familiar with acute wounds that break the external or internal body protection layers through punctures, scrapes, incisions, heat and cold or more traumatic impacts as in accident trauma.
But, there is another source of wounds that come from the restriction of blood circulation resulting in necrotic and devitalized tissue, often seen as pressure ulcers. This lessening of blood flow is seen with bedridden patients and in diabetes-related wounds.
Hyperbaric Oxygen
Hyperbaric Oxygen therapy exposes the body to 100% oxygen under pressure, delivered in a hyperbaric oxygen hard chamber.
Oxygen can accelerate the healing process by:
* decreasing the inflammation response so the body's flows can resume into the wounded area, and
* by promoting new blood vessel growth in and around wounds through stimulating fibroblast to secrete collagen, a protein that provides strength and form to the extra cellular matrix which is the base structure of organs and connective tissue.
Wound healing is important for limb salvage in many patients, reducing the risk of amputations by 85%.
We are most grateful for the work of Dr. Sexton and his contribution to this underdeveloped branch of healing!
