What is the best magnesium supplement to take?

I used to take oxide, but switched to magnesium citrate which I started Saturday night, and last night I felt very ill and didn't sleep much and tonight I am really sick with flu-symptoms - very tight throat, blocking nose, rhinitis, sneeze, dull headache. It's 5am here and I can't sleep at all and feel quite miserable!

I'm wondering if magnesium citrate is related at all to citrus from fruits? I have this kind of reaction to fruit, which is why I am wondering. It could be hayfever or a bug, but giving the timing I can't help wonder.

Hi Dawn. I've not been well at all today. I just got up - about 4pm. I am feeling a bit better now and the rhinitis seems to have stopped, but still whacked out and my throat is sore.

I'm not going to take any more of the magensium citrate, at least until I can find out if it is related to citrus - might just be coincidence. I get reaction to most fruit, but worse to citrus fruit than any other. It usuallly takes about 24 hours to get sick, which would tie in with me having taken the citrate.

How are you doing?

I just looked it up. Citrate drives from citric acid which is in fruit. That would explain why I am so sick.

Anyone know of alternatives to magnesium citrate and oxide? I can't recall having a bad reaction to the oxide, but with these things it's impossible to say if it has other side effects.

I don't know why fruit makes me sick, but without a doubt it does. My doctor didn't believe me, but I get sick if I drink fruit, eat fruit, and now with this citrate. I have tolerated fruit a bit better since getting my root canal tooth out, but not much.

Magnesium malate is also a highly absorbable form, like the citrate. You might want to give that a try. Also, the herb Red Raspberry is high in magnesium. It's often used for menstrual and labor pain and cramping...magnesium acts like a natural muscle relaxant. Of course, the herb doesn't have nearly the same milligram amount as the capsules/tablets, so you may need to take a lot in order to get similar results. If you end up with loose stools, then just reduce the amount. Red raspberry makes a delicious tea or you can take it in capsule or liquid form. Here's more info about it: Red Raspberry or Red Raspberry Blend (alcohol-free liquid extract)

Also: buy Red Raspberry or buy Red Raspberry Blend

Anyone know of:

magnesium gluconate
magnesium chloride
magnesium ascorbate

I saw these online but I wouldn't know which are possibilities, if any. I saw that the malate was not advisable for those allergic to apples, unfortunately. That might be only one product, I don't know. It's pretty frustrating!

I am feeling a little better now after taking paracetamol, but have been in bed all day, except when I got up for an hour earlier, and couldn't even get myself anything to eat, I was so ill. My poor Daddy cooked me dinner (my mother is too ill to cook these days) but I just didn't have much of an appetite. I've had a hot chocolate with rice milk and sugar (normal kind) - not the best thing, probably, but my body is so messed up that I have to eat what I can stomach.

Don't take magnesium glycinate! I got some of that because it's one of the most easily absorbed forms of magnesium, and it gave me terrible migraines. I was stumped because magnesium is supposed to *help* migraines. It made sense though when I read that it's a form of magnesium that chelates mercury.

http://www.coldcure.com/html/dep.html

"Glycine (the second component of magnesium glycinate) chelates (removes) mercury from the body, and may be superior to even magnesium taurate for people with heavy metal poisoning in the short- or near-term. Citric acid and cysteine also remove mercury and appear safer for long term use than glycine. The first stability constants for glycine, cysteine and citric acid are in the log 10 to log 14 range, which are vastly stronger bindings than can be broken by any natural biology or chemistry event occurring in the body. Glycine is a non-essential amino acid, but for people with mercury poisoning, it, cysteine and citric acid may be highly important. Because of these amazing chelating, sequestering or binding powers, if they reacted with mercury in any form in the body, they should be able to bind them much more tightly, making mercury biologically unavailable in the body."

More about the citric acid. There was a person on another board recently who was afraid she had gotten mercury poisoning from fish, and one of the problems she had was a strong reaction to citrus fruits. So I looked it up and found someone whose dentist told him citric acid reacts with mercury:

Thanks, Linda <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" /> That could be why I get a problem with citrus. I am feeling better today, but still have a headache and was in bed until about 2pm.

I can't remember when the problem with the fruit started, but I don't think it's a coincidence that for years I have avoided fruit - I was toxic by 12. I think we "naturally" avoid those things that make us feel bad.

I was coming home from the US one time and I had a couple of glasses or organge juice before take off and a couple on flight (which was 10 hours) and by the time I got to London, a good 18 hours after I had first had the juice, I was really ill. Orange juice is the worst for me. I can tolerate apple to some degree, but not much.

My skin was extremely sensitive on my arms yesterday, like a burn, which I have noticed now ties in with what is happening with mercury in my body. It's still sore, but not as bad.

I'm wondering what's in the protein powder I've ordered, I'll have to check. I think it should be okay.

I think I have a cold-virus. I feel so bad I don't think it's an allergic reaction (or at least not just that). My sinuses and everything is inflammed and I can't sleep from blocked nose still, have a terrible sore throat and my ears are bunged. Going to get some sudafed or something. I don't usually take anything, but three days now and I can't get any relief.

Hi everyone,

Please can someone give me some advise on this.

Ive been taking magnesium chloride for a while but havnt had the same results as i did on the magnesium chelate. I went to buy some more but they never had so i purchased a calcium-magnesium supplement because i read that its the best way to take magnesium. Its calcium glycinate and magnesium glycinate in a ratio of two to one in favor of the calcium. I havnt taken it yet but is this the truth.. the whole ratio thing and is glycinate a bio available form. Should i take it or would it be better to take the chelate. Thanks for any advice

I read that they came up with that 2-1 in favor of Calcium simple going by the make-up of bones and not taking into consideration that you have a lot of magnesium in the muscles and it is needed for nerve transmission and 350 enzematiic functions. From my research and personal experience, I stopped taking supplemental calcium altogether and wouldn't recommend it to anyone who is mercury toxic as hg also blocks mg and you are in need of even more of it to help with detoxification. Also, if you are deficient (and you are if you have hg) in mg and take calcium, your mg deficiency will become even worse because you have to have mg to process calcium. YOur body will even take what it needs from your bones to try and process it.

My mother has osteoporosis and has been on calcium for years and fosomax. She stopped the fosomax and calcium and has only been taking mg (Dr. didn't know) for about 1 1/2-2 years and just had another bone scan done and to his surprise (and I 'm sure dismay because he wanted to try her on his "new" drug) she hadn't lost anyone more bone mass!

I have an irritated throat today, and am not sure of the cause. It may be the flu-virus reinfecting (doctor says it does after about 10 days), it could be that I am eating a handful of walnuts, or the new magnesium supplement I took last night. (didn't say if it was citrus or not) or just hayfever.

Anyway, this is so frustrating. I do hope it's not the walnuts as I need them for fat and omega 3, but have a terrible feeling that it might be as this isn't the first time I've had this reaction to nuts.

I am so trying not to get depressed about this - first fruit, now nuts - I really don't know what to eat these days. But I know I just have to be rational and think of alternative fat sources. The difficulty is that most fat sources are saturated, and the body need unsaturated, and that is mainly nuts.

I've been having some difficulty finding a good magnesium supplement too. The malate form can be dangerous for us to take as it supposedly mobilizes alumininum, but I don't think it has a strong bond to the metal so probably just moves things around. The citrate is from fruit which I can't take either. The oxide form is well known to cause diarreha and of course happens to me <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/crazy.gif" alt="" />. The aspartate form is actually an exitorary amino acid and this worsens my anxiety symptom..........so what I am left with is the magnesium carbonate form.............which I have just started to use, but seems to be going well. The only drawback is this form needs stomach acid to be absorbed, so I take a little HCI supplement with it as I know I am low in acid.

The below is what is typically found about malic acid (the malate magnesium form) on the net. But I have also read that malic acid can push aluminum into the brain as it doesn't bond well to the Alu:

"Treatment with malic acid has been shown to greatly increase the fecal and urinary excretion of aluminum and reduce the concentration of aluminum found in various organs and tissues."

I actually bought malic acid supplements in connection with gallstone treatment as this particular acid crushes gallstones present in the liver and gallbladder, BUT, I got terrible neurological symptoms from the malic acid supplement, so decided to read up about it and that is when I found the aluminum warning in addition to the recommendations. Better to be safe than sorry I thought........and felt.....

Wow, good information.

I believe I read that malic is low in people with fibromyalgia. I also found that "there is some preliminary evidence that malic acid, in combination with magnesium, may be helpful for some with fibromyalgia." from the PDR Health website.

I have personally believed that mercury AND aluminum is the primary cause of Alzheimer's.

When you put this information together, is makes sense that malic acid mobilizes aluminum. This is extremely interesting and I would have only found this out because of the information on this thread.

Interestingly, NSP also makes this malic-containing combination available for chronic fatigue:

Fibro-Malic

Thanks, Ann. At the moment I'm having to do without magnesium supplement until I can find a suitable one. Of the ones I've tried, oxide was the best for me, in the sense of having no reaction, but I don't know if it mobiliises mercury or has an anti-antioxidant effect?

I found this site that explains the difference between food intolerance and food allergy:

http://www.betterhealth.vic.gov.au/...ood_allergy_and_intolerance?OpenDocument

But that it's hard to tell the an intolerance or allergy apart.

I think I have a mild allergy to nuts. I don't eat them very often, just as I've never eaten fruit very often, and I do think that part of us psychologically avoids those foods that don't make us feel good.

But when I have fruit (at least a certain quantity, marmalade or jam is usually ok, for example) then within about 24 hours I will have rhinitis, which is a symptom of allergy and intolerance. But with nuts, I tend to get a swelled throat within a couple of hours. I had some nuts teatiime, and I have an irritated throat again - not sore as such, just that it feels tight and swollen. But I am ok with a small amount of nuts i.e. I regularly ate a snickers bar wiith no problems. But peanut butter sandwich would give me the same "groggy" feeling, like the beginning of a cold.

It's so frustrating because I am an ovo-vegetarian, which means I only eat eggs. I think I'm going to have to cut out, or at least down, on the nuts. Unfortunately I'm going to have to substitute with the "sweeties" i.e. cakes and cookies to get some fat, which I am not exactly happy about because of the carbs, but I have to get some more fat in - eating cakes is no hardship, mind as I love cakes <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" /> I thnk I will start baking my own cakes as I bought one in the shop today and while nice, is full of E's.

Hopefully I will put on weight with cakes. I did a couple of years ago and went up to 9 stone, so if I can get up to 8 and maintain it, I'll be happy. I've pretty much given up on gluten free because it was too hard for me with my already hard to manage diet restrictions.

Maybe when I am less toxic I'll be able to tolerate fruits and nuts. It's so weird that my body attacks them like they are toxins. I don't think it's the copper, because chocolate is also hiigh in it and I do okay with it.

I'd like to eat more healthy, but I've had to come to the sad conclusion that what is healthy for everyone else seems to be effectively toxic for me. But I just refuse to get depressed about it right now, and just get on with eating what I can, and try to get as much organic in as possible.

I'm going to see how it goes with the nuts as my mother has a tight throat aswell so it could be just hayfever. Off topic, but there really should be some law that makes it compulsory for neighbours to take care of their gardens. Our house is semi-detached (which to Americans is two houses stuck together) and so our gardens are too. The house next to us is rented out to students and the landlord has no care for the house at all. The grass in the back is almost as high as me and blows off clouds of pollen. It's so maddening as we are all hayfever sufferers and my younger sister has bad asthma. My father has complained many times to various places, but no one ever did anything or made them cut their grass, even though it brings vermin and the seeds fly onto our clothes hanging on the line in the garden. But the owners of the house just don't care and have let the house become a dump, which affects the value of our house too. I hope they sell on soon and a family moves in.
