I have one final appt this Monday to remove my final quadrant of amalgams. I have a tooth with a crown that was done at the last appt and was wondering if the tooth needs removed or if it can be drilled and refilled. I am not sure how the whole crown process works and want to make sure I do this right. I started with 8 amalgams total and have 3 left. Any information would be greatly appreciated.

When I just had my crowns replaced the dentist was able to take them off, remove the amalgam material underneath and put new crowns on. One was even below the gumline once he cleaned it up and it worked out fine.

Jim,
I think it depends on the condition of the tooth and it's usually a judgement call made by the dentist. However, the final decision is always yours.
Most people have amalgam fillings replaced with DiamondLite and Crowns placed/replaced with DiamondCrown. Remember to avoid aluminum-containing fillings and crowns(ceramic or porcelain).
Let us know how it goes.
