Despite even the most conscientious home care efforts, bacteria can gain a foothold, so to speak, and multiply into colonies that take on a life of their own.
 
Having bacteria in the mouth is not unusual as one can identify at least 500 individual species on any given day.  Certain kinds of bacteria, working with the existing oral environment, form biofilm on the teeth which is called dental plaque.  This is found in every organism on the planet that has teeth and in fact is a benefit to the host in the early stages of formation, providing teeth with a layer of protection.  
 
Dental plaque not only forms on tooth surfaces but also under the gums and in crevices and fissures.  An oral cavity that is not too acidic, with high oxygen levels, allows the "good bacteria" to thrive in the biofilm community, but the existing diets in western cultures have changed the equation.  As the mouth becomes more acidic, the good bacteria die off leaving the acid tolerant varieties. These are the micro organisms found in high concentrations in dental caries sites and where periodontal disease exists.  
 
The dental plaque is now protecting a completely different acid tolerant pathogenic colony that is demineralizing the tooth enamel.  These are the ones you really WANT to remove!  They not only have a negative impact on the teeth and gums but can migrate to other parts of the body negatively effecting health.  
 
The problem with home care is we lack the equipment to eliminate plaque build up, particularly from the hard to reach surfaces!  You are probably familiar with the different methods used in the past by dental hygienists to remove the plaque!  Some far less comfortable than others!
