Many centuries ago, St. Augustine warned that when governments are not subject to justice, they become nothing but bands of robbers. In his monumental work The City of God, Augustine told a parable in which an emperor captured a pirate and berated the criminal for menacing people on the high seas. 

The pirate returned the rebuke, pointing out that he commanded a single ship -- but the emperor had at his command a vast navy, and carried out plunder and murder in the name of his empire. The pirate and the emperor were in the same business -- but it was the emperor who was the much larger menace to the pace of the world.

The only difference between a criminal band and a corrupt government, warned Augustine, is that a government can write laws to justify its criminal behavior. The American republic was supposed to be different: It was supposed to be a system in which the government itself would be ruled by law and accountable to the people from whom it derived its limited authority -- and that authority could be revoked by the people when the government abused it. 

It is obvious to any honest person that we don't live under that system right now. Indeed, the people who presume to govern us are brazenly indifferent to the rule of law, and recognize no limits on their power.

What can be done when the government refuses to obey the law? Tom Fitton and Judicial Watch are doing their formidable best to expose and document the apparently limitless corruption of the federal government, and to pursue accountability through the courts.
