Anyone read the book Tortured By Sound? I read it and it's an interesting look into the hyperacusis expirence plus awfull tinnitus too.. Not many if any books out there written from this kind of perspective on H.. For thoses who don't have it.. But for those that do.. " WARNING " .. Carol's Story..
Dear Board Participants::
Just to reassure you, I was definitely a worst case-history for Dr. Jastreboff with both conditions.
Dr. Pawel Jastreboff knows exactly what is in my book and what I'm currently doing-- since my true story is basically about "him" and his discovery, TRT.
It is an accounting of a very personal, candid story between the two of us as he and his protocol brings me to a complete and permanent recovery.
From the moment hyperacusis exploded, the following was my diagnosis, quoting Dr. Jastreboff,
"you are off the boards with hyperacusis--there is no sound in the world you are able to tolerate."
Dr. Jastreboff said this in January of l996.
My condition broke out on October l4, l993.
So, for the three years of trying and doing wrong and dangerous treatments to my body, not knowing nor understanding about hyperacusis nor where to find the correct help,
I continued struggling to run around to save my life using earplugs and a headset as best as I could.
I wouldn't have "known" to talk quietly to reduce my suffering as I understood "nothing" about my suffering and I screamed and cried out loudly to everyone,
pleading for someone to save my life.
My husband couldn't even understand my pain nor actions and listened to the unbelieving doctors I saw who thought I was deranged.
I was physically very strong, never thinking at that time that I possibly might never find that one doctor who would know what was wrong with me:
Hyperacusis--other than my continual diagnosis of, "Go home and learn how to live with tinnitus."
Thank God, I got that phone call from a tinnitus sufferer in the SF bay area who told me about Dr. Jastreboff.
So, hyperacusis was my major, No. 1 problem.
Quoting Dr. Jastreboff again, "Your case is very severe, my other patients have only bits and pieces of what you have; you have things I've only read and studied about."
It is very sad for the participants, who might want and be able to follow in my footsteps to get their lives back,
not to understand the truth about my past conditions and the treatment protocol I used which made me well.
My Good Morning America segment did replay in April of last year.
But on l/29/09, Dr. Tim Johnson from ABC, interviewed me again, to further endorse TRT, to help our boys fighting and others afflicted as well.
Re tinnitus, I initially had one hi-pitched tone; my tinnitus progressed to over a dozen sounds, interacting with my hyperacusis in a very complex manner.
Tinnitus was a secondary problem as I had to reverse hyperacusis first--completely and permanently-- before my tinnitus volume could be affected/ lowered.
As for my recovery, I am completely fine and have been for many years now.
For info: Hyperacusis is completely curable/reversible with "correct" TRT and tinnitus volume can be permanently lowered so that a patient might have to strain to hear it,
even in a quiet room.
Again, mine has been gone for almost a decade.
And, most of my tinnitus tones were filtered out of my auditory system and are inaudible.
I was left with an extremely low level tone which I'm trained to ignore.
My husband and I square dance in extremely loud calling & music at least once or twice a week and I go into all sound environments.
I live life to the fullest like nothing was ever wrong with my auditory.
I will never forget my past suffering, though, and I'm more than happy to talk to anyone who contacts me--to try to help them get to the correct route for recovery.
Currently, Dr. Margaret Jastreboff is treating patients just outside of Baltimore, MD.

What I wish for everyone is that no one should have to go through what I did nor suffer anymore from tinnitus and hyperacusis. .
