"America America, may God thy gold refine"

So we sing, but do we mean it? Do we know what the term 'refine' means. The wonderful lyric is drawn directly from scripture, in fact.

Now I do not say God isn't upset; I do not say God shall not deliver the harvest America has so negligently sown. I maintain it is very difficult to determine: is God's judgment upon us, or is God refining the gold of America?

To answer in haste is worse than not to answer at all.
