Jude 1:7
Even as Sodom and Gomorrha, and the cities about them in like manner, giving themselves over to fornication, and going after strange flesh, are set forth for an example, suffering the vengeance of eternal fire.
Sodom and Gomorrah were destroyed with everlasting, or eternal fire but the cities are not burning today.
I think the effects of the fire are everlasting, but not the burning itself.
Just that nobody is going to put it out.
This is what I believe the best translation of the term is.
I think the term " for ever" that is used in the Bible simply means a period of time, limited or unlimited.
Like Jonah did not spend forever in the whale.
After research on the word and it's use in Scripture this could just be a phrase of speech but with meaning.
Of a period of time, limited or unlimited.
Plus also believe in Matthew 13:40-42.
"At the end of this world."
As therefore the tares are gathered and burned in the fire; so shall it be in the end of this world.
The Son of man shall send forth his angels, and they shall gather out of his kingdom all things that offend, and them which do iniquity; And shall cast them into a furnace of fire: there shall be wailing and gnashing of teeth.

Of course someday we will all know for sure because it will happen when it happens and not a day less then then.
