-Broken Bread
-Luke 24:13-35

"Then the two told what had happened on the way, and how Jesus was recognized by them when he broke the bread." (Luke 24:35) cross

Though they knew their long-awaited Messiah was dead, Cleopas and his friend on the Emmaus Road realized that the Scriptures had been fulfilled after all. And He was standing before them! In the best, most accurate biblical and theological lesson possible, Christ confirmed to them the recurring theme of Scripture: that God was always restoring His people to Himself, no matter the cost, even as it had been necessary "for the Messiah to suffer these things and enter his glory." These two were eager to reconcile the events of the crucifixion with the bizarre account from the women of His reported resurrection, so they listened.

When did they recognize Him? When He broke bread and they participated with Him in an act similar to His last supper before His death. This reminder was what they needed to feed on. Death had indeed come to Jesus, but His life was stronger than all the forces of the world combined.

What did they do next?
They ran seven miles--in the dark--to their friends with the good news!

Christ's broken body reminds us of how much God loves us. His resurrection confirming hope for us in even the most discouraging times. In Christ, we find the blessed hope! He's coming back!
