Alzheimer's disease is a progressive, degenerative disease of the brain and the most common form of dementia. Today, one in ten persons over sixty-five, nearly half of those over eighty-five, and a small percentage of people in their thirties and forties have Alzheimer's disease. These numbers add up to an estimated four million Americans with the disease. Unless a cure or prevention is found, that total is projected to increase to fourteen million in the next fifty years.

Since 1980, the Alzheimer's Association has been providing leadership to eliminate Alzheimer's disease through the advancement of research, while enhancing care and support services for individuals and their families.

Specifically, their aims as an organization are to mobilize worldwide resources for research; to promote, devolop and disseminate educational programs and training guidelines for health and social service providers; to increase public awareness of Alzheimer's disease; to expand access to services and optimal care techniques; and to build organizational capability to ensure the most effective and efficient foundation for carrying out this mission.
