 Dr. Youngman on TanTalk radio

Listen to Dr. Kirk Youngman on TAN Talk 1340 am every Saturday morning from 9 to 10, following the Gary Trudeau show

Many have asked about Dr. Youngman and his background.

Here's a brief synopsis of what he's been up to over the years:

Dr. Youngman graduated from the University of California at Davis 1977 with a major in zoology..

He then attended dental school at Washington University School of Dental Medicine in St Louis MO in 1983.

Following graduation, he worked for the US Public Health Service as a dentist, then Dental Director of both the Indian Health Services and Migrant Farm Clinic from 1983 to 1989.

He was in private practice in northern California from 1990 to 2009.

Dr. Youngman did the post-graduate TMJ program at UCLA in 1986, which gave him a solid basis in TMJ and facial pain.

He then started courses at Las Vegas Institute of Advanced Dental Studies in 1986.  He did the entire continuum through full mouth reconstruction, neuromuscular, cosmetics and aesthetics, and has trained directly under the legendary Bill Dickerson, David Hornbrook and others.

Dr. Youngman studied with Hal Huggins and has been mercury-free since 1994.  He is currently a member of IAOMT, and has been a practicing biological dentist since 1994.

Dear Russ,

We all know that our thoughts have a profound impact on our physical body on a very basic level.

The fascinating research of Dr. Masaru Emoto shows the effect music, words, thoughts, and even photos have on the crystal structure of water.  Remember, we are mainly water.  Thus, how we feel about ourselves, our self-esteem, can have a lot to do with our physical health.

This is why I believe that procedures that help one feel better about oneself are beneficial. Of course, the expectations cannot be unrealistic. Let us explore some of these options.

Self Image and Esthetic Treatment Choices

Bleaching

Quite often I get asked about bleaching.  "Doctor Behm, are the chemicals used in bleaching safe?  In fact, we do recommend bleaching to a lot of people, as I have tested numerous patients on the hydrogen peroxide gel, and find most do quite well with it.

When dark teeth are made whiter, this can cause a person to smile more, thus have a positive effect on their well-being. Another benefit is the wonderful energy that a smile emits, which has a beneficial impact on the receiving end of the smile.

How does bleaching work?

The hydrogen peroxide gel comes in different concentrations, the higher concentrations have a faster effect, but can be too strong for some people. The over-the-counter bleaches, i..e., Crest White Strips, have a concentration of 6-10% of hydrogen peroxide depending on which type you buy. In-office bleaches can go up to a concentration of 16%.

We offer "at home" bleaching.  Impressions are made of your teeth, and a custom tray is made for the upper and lower arches.  Squeeze the bleaching material inside the tray and leave it in place for 30-60 minutes once or twice a day for approximately two weeks. I prefer this rather than leaving the tray in while sleeping.

White Teeth for Life
This is a program for our patients who no longer have any mercury (silver or amalgam) fillings, to enable them to enjoy the benefits of a whiter, brighter smile.

The program is $100 to enroll and includes the home bleaching trays as well as a tube of bleach at each cleaning appointment for life.  Appointments must be kept in order to stay enrolled in the White Teeth for Life program.

Failed cleaning appointments disqualify the patient from receiving the bleach at their cleanings unless they pay the $100 re-enrollment fee.

Call the office at 727 446.6747 for more information.
Crowns, veneers and fillings will not be made whiter with bleaching.  Sometimes teeth can become sensitive with any method of bleaching, which is usually temporary.  The sensitivity is due to the teeth becoming a bit dehydrated from the gel.  If they become sensitive, swish water in your mouth and drink extra water, and they should become rehydrated.

Remember, your teeth are alive and there is communication from the outside of the tooth to the inside.  Therefore, I do not recommend that patients with health issues bleach their teeth until they are healthier and less toxic. I also do not think it is a good idea to bleach with mercury in the mouth, as more mercury will come off the filling in the presence of the bleach.

When approaching bleaching from this perspective, I have not seen any adverse effects. What I have seen is that people smile more in order to show off those "pearly whites."

Aesthetic Dentistry
Sometimes bleaching is not enough. Teeth that are crooked, uneven, too small, or unevenly spaced present a bigger problem if someone wants a "new smile." Sometimes orthodontics is the best solution. However, many do not like the thought of wearing braces for six months to two years. In many cases, we can crown these teeth to create a movie-star smile.

As my patients know, I try to be as conservative as possible. I do not like to "cut" teeth down for crowns unless absolutely necessary.  But in some cases it may be worth it.

Reshaping

Little changes often make a huge difference. Just some reshaping of the front teeth or the bonding of material to one or two teeth can completely change a person's appearance. Do your eye teeth look like fangs? Adding some material to create a softer smile can make a world of difference.

Gum health with amazing side effects

I recently came across a product that has ingredients which not only benefit the gums, but have the side effects of reducing wrinkles on the face (and elsewhere) and reducing joint pain.  It contains a form of collagen that the body can easily assimilate, as well as resveratrol, hyaluronic acid, chondroitin sulfate and 12 exotic fruit juices that have anti-oxidant and anti-inflammatory properties.

Here are some actual wins on the gums:

"I am 72 years-old and since taking Jusuru my gums are greatly improved.                             Helen S.

I have a weird gum problem that my dad passed down to me and my gums have never been better.  Melissa B.

Jusuru is a cutting-edge liquid nutraceutical, backed by patented and scientific research which promotes healthy aging, active joints, and younger looking skin. It contains a

naturally occurring matrix of hyaluronic acid (acts as a binding, lubricating and protective agent found in our eyes, gums, hair, skin and joints), chondroitin sulfate (helps give cartilage elasticity and may help the body to repair damaged cartilage and restore joint integrity), and collagen (provides the structural framework of the connective tissues to keep skin firm and joints active and fluid).
