Why Am I Still So Sinful?
1 John 1:5-10

"The heart is deceitful above all things, and beyond cure. Who can understand it?" (Jeremiah 17:9) bible

I thought I would be much holier by now. Perhaps you too are surprised to discover so much sin continuing to infect your imagination and ooze out of you toward others. You rarely remember to think of God or pray; your mind is fixed on yourself most of the time. Maybe you still lack self-control and often give in to temptations. You thought that growing sanctification would mean victory over your most embarrassing and humilating sins.

The truth is very different. You still wrestle with familiar sins and see new ones that you didn't recognize before. Even your best obedience is contaminated with prideful motives and selfishness.

Yet God is not surprised by your sin: He has always known the depths of your wicked heart and has loved just the same. Don't be discouraged. The more weakness and sin you see in yourself, the more you cherish God's Son and His death and obedience in your place. Your growth and sanctification are proceeding according to God's perfect schedule for you. ~~
