Suggested Reading

This is another book from Dr. Behm's reading list.

Tooth Truth by Frank Jerome, DDS.

Tooth Truth cover

Following are excerpts from the Tooth Truth book.

"This book will discuss disturbing information. Most people have accepted whatever treatment their dentist has recommended without question. No one wants to learn that what dentists have had implanted in their bodies is a source of growing levels of substances that can wreck their immune system and destroy their most precious gift, good health.

"Most of us expect good health, even while doing most everything we can to undermine it. We eat too much and rest too little. We actively seek vices that can slowly or quickly destroy us. We take unnecessary risks, as if we earn points for foolhardy behavior. The last thing any of wants to know is that there is another major source of ill health that is to some degree affecting all of us right this minute and will probably worsen every day. It is easy to turn a deaf ear to this information, but ignorance does not make it safe.

FDA on Mercury Fillings

"Mercury in fillings has never been approved by the FDA, which has avoided classifying amalgam at all. The FDA says mercury fillings are a "reaction" product made by dentists, and therefore it is a dentist's responsibility to assure the product's safety. Does that make you feel safe?

Skill Level of Dentists

"Unfortunately, patients have little ability to tell one dentist from another. Many believe that all dentists are the same, performing procedures equally well. If you think about that belief for a few seconds, you will realize how wrong it is. Patients who believe they can go to a big clinic staffed with dentists recently graduated from dental school, and still get quality care at rock bottom prices are deluding themselves.

A Tooth Is An Organ

"A tooth is an organ, just as the heart or kidney or any bone in the body is an organ. An abscessed or gangrenous tooth is not only a dead tooth, it is a dead organ. The body does not like dead organs. The immune system does not recognize this now dead tissue as a part of itself and immediately sets out to eliminate or isolate it. The system must fight for as long as the tooth remains in the body and in many instances, it must fight against bacteria and toxins left after the tooth has been extracted."

Part 1            Part 2

Hi Russ,

What is the importance to you of an improper or misaligned biting condition?

This is called a malocclusion, which is a misalignment of teeth and/or incorrect relation between the upper and lower teeth. There are different kinds of malocclusions that we see everyday. There are overbites, underbites, and crooked or improperly aligned teeth, to name a few.

Almost everyone has heard of an overbite but really what is it and how can the overbite be corrected?

Overbite refers to the extent of vertical overlap of the upper front teeth over the lower front teeth.  See how the upper teeth totally overlap or cover the lower teeth in the photo below.

 Overbite

This shows a typical overbite condition. Dr. Behm understands that this is not only a poor biting circumstance, but this condition could be creating other health problems, which could include:

Headaches

Neck aches

Backaches

Ringing in the ears

Cracking or popping sounds in the jaw joint.

The photograph below shows an orthodontists patient before and after his treatment. By correcting the overbite, the orthodontist was able to change the patients facial symmetry.  Notice the change in this fellow's profile.  His chin (lower jaw) has been brought forward and is more prominent in the after picture (on the right)..  This is much healthier (and more handsome) than the prior condition.

 Before & After Ortho

Dr. Behm knows that there are ways to correct this without surgery. This condition could be changed temporarily with an appliance that will increase the amount the lower teeth show, or this overbite condition could be corrected with orthodontics.

Orthodontic work usually consists of braces, which realign and pull down the teeth if they need to be more prominent.

We can also correct this kind of malocclusion without orthodontic work, by placing crowns on the molars, making them taller.  How many, one might ask?

It really depends on the severity of the condition.  We would follow the neuromuscular protocol that we learned at The Las Vegas Institute For Advanced Dental Studies (LVI). You can read more about neuromuscular dentistry on our website, www.behmnaturaldentistry.com.  You can also obtain more information on the Las Vegas Institute by checking out their website as well, www.lviglobal.com

Another form of an improper bite condition is called an underbite.

An underbite is when the lower front teeth go over the upper front teeth. This is the opposite of how a normal bite is supposed to be. It could be named a reverse bite and is sometimes cruelly called a bulldog bite. It is the exact opposite of an overbite.

Here is a classic example of an under bite. The teeth that are from the center of the photo to the left are in the correct alignment but the teeth in the front are in an under bite. Notice how the lower teeth protrude past the upper teeth. This is not the ideal scene.

 Underbite

Bulldog's underbite

In the animal kingdom, the bulldog is the most common mammal to have such an under bite.

Causes:  In almost all cases, an underbite is caused by nasal obstruction, mouth breathing or tongue thrust (where the tongue goes between the front teeth while swallowing or speaking).  This continuous pressure causes the lower jaw to overgrow and creates a mismatch between the larger lower jaw and smaller upper jaw. The result is that only the back teeth touch.

Treatments:  In most cases traditional metal braces are needed.  Orthodontists are now beginning to use metal braces on the lowers.  On the top the braces are put behind the teeth (called lingual braces).

Invisalign treatment for an underbite is usually not effective, as the condition normally requires rubber bands of various strengths and other appliances to get as much movement as possible.

The last example of a misaligned bite that we'll discuss this week is a crossbite.

Crossbite

Before & after crossbite

A crossbite occurs when some of the teeth wind up on the "wrong side of the track," meaning the bottom teeth are shifted to one side or shoved forward or backward. If, for example, when you bite down, your top teeth fall inside your bottom teeth on one side, you have a crossbite.

What causes a crossbites?

There are many reasons why this occurs, including jaw size and heredity.  Another is delayed loss of baby teeth.  Some people keep their baby teeth so long that their permanent teeth come in behind their baby teeth, like a second row of teeth.

If this happens in the upper jaw, the permanent top front teeth may wind up sitting behind the lower front teeth when you bite down. This can happen on one side (unilaterally) or on both sides (bilaterally).

Does Dr. Behm correct crossbites at his office?  Not really, this condition is best corrected by one of our highly recommended orthodontists.

These three examples are seen quite often in our office. We don't want to mislead you into thinking that we do orthodontic work here at Natural Dentistry.  We do want you to know that if you have one of these three conditions there is always help.

Please call the office at 727 446-6747 and speak Amy or Sarah at the front desk to either help you get scheduled for an exam, or a consultation if you have recently had an exam, or if you just have some lingering questions that you may want answered.
