Suggested Reading
Whole Body Dentistry by Mark A. Breiner, DDS.

If you ever asked yourself what Dr. Behm is doing or how is he different from most other dentists, you will find the answers in this book.
Here are a couple quotes from the book:
In chaper 3, Dr. Breiner says:
"This year millions of Americans and their children will needlessly suffer a broad range of preventable illnesses. Less serious conditions like excessive fatigue and headaches may go unnoticed or will be incorrectly attributed to aging or stress.
Thousands of individuals will develop more serious symptons like arthritis, coltis, Alzheimer's, heart diease, infections, hypertension, thyroid imbalances, migraines, kidney damage, and even neurological problems. These people will become ill for no apparent reason.
But more often than not, there is a reason for these illnesses: their mouth. The renowned German physician, Dr. Reinhard Voll, based on more than forty years of research and observation, estimated that nearly 80% of all illness is realated entirely or partialy to problems in the mouth."
In chapter 7, "Electrical Problems" he gives this example:
"I would estimate that about half of the problems I see in my patients are related to electrical curents caused by dissimilar metals in the mouth.
Any chemical engineer can tell you that when you put two different metals together in a salt solution, similar to saliva, electrical current is generated.
Essentially the metals act as a battery, and depending upon which metals you combine, the amount of electricity generated can vary."
"Every hour billions of electrical impulses create an automatic messaging system that keeps your body fuctioning as a highly sophisticated series of processes. Everything from the production of blood cells to the rate at which your bones deteriorate is controlled by the network of electrical impulses in the nervous system.
The electrical "messages" emanating from the metals in your mouth may be in disharmony and interfere with your normal electrical signals. It should hardly seem remarkable that this current could make you ill."
"Studies from Europe indicate that it is considered acceptable for teeth to emit electricity below 100 millivolts and three micro amps.
Linda is the patient in the Dental Detective Story in chapter 7. She measured a whopping 980 millivolts in one upper molar!"
Linda's story:
"Linda, a physician's wife, is a high-powered business executive who travels extensively. Over a span of nearly a decade, she would periodically and without warning, visually experience everthing around her 'flip' upside down. Then, understandably, she would pass out."
"Despite extensive investigation by teams of neurologists, and every kind of specialist imaginable, no cause for the bizarre phenomenon was ever found. Eventually, someone referred her to me.
Through testing, I discovered that there was a lot of electrical current in her mouth, but one tooth in particular tested out as having high voltage but no current.
According to a neurobiologist, this meant that the current was actually building up and the discharging all at once, probably 'shorting' her brain circuits causing her sudden visual problem. We removed all her fillings and she has not had a single episode in the past five years."

Hi Russ,
What exactly makes a beautiful smile?
There is a universal agreement of good proportion running throughout the beauty of nature, art, and, believe it or not, even in dentistry. This ratio is called the Golden Proportion.
The Golden Proportion results from the division of a straight line in such a way that the shorter part is to the longer part as the longer part is to the whole. Each ratio equals 0.618. Now this may seem pretty complicated but a look at some of these examples will help you understand.
I'm sure you've seen some people who have had cosmetic dentistry, yet the results are just not right, maybe not up to what the person had hoped for. This may explain why.

Simply, the pairs of lines are different lengths and have a ratio to each other. The last line shows the ratio of 1 to .618, which is the simplest form of the Golden Proportion. We'll use the formula of 1 to 1.618 in the discussion below.
The photo below shows a woman with a Golden Proportion Gauge as it relates to her facial symmetry. The distance between her two eyes is the equivalent to the distance value of 1.618 and the distance of the width of her eye, resulting in the ratio of 1.. This proportion is perceived by us humans as being beautiful.

The illustration below shows how Dr. Behm uses the Golden Proportion to design great smiles. The widths of the two middle teeth are the exact same width as the total of the next two teeth going back. This creates a pleasing proportion. | |

In the picture below, two sets of rectangles apply to the Golden Proportion. The top horizontal box shows how this ratio is used to find the ideal size of patient's front teeth.

You can see that by applying this proportion, the ideal width to height ratio of the central teeth can be determined.
This measurement also allows us to take the Golden Proportion in a different direction, as you can see by the vertical box. This box shows the ideal height spacing of the upper teeth to the lower teeth. This is the golden vertical, used to optimize a patient's biting surface and jaw joint condition in the Neuromuscular Dentistry aspect of our practice.
If you have recently had an exam with Dr. Behm, you probably noticed he does a lot of measuring. He is getting the measurements to apply the golden proportion to determine the ideal vertical distance that your teeth should be. We then document this recording and use it for further testing, if need be.
We use a set of very accurate digital calipers that measures in millimeters. In understanding the structure of one's oral cavity, Dr. Behm follows this Golden Proportion to ensure the most proportional and aesthetic look for the patient, achieving a great balance of tooth symmetry and facial harmony.
