Here in Canada, there is a series of TV commercial put on by the dentists association, or whatever it is called. They promote people going to the dentist (what else!)

One of these commercials - and it is being aired during the Winter Olympics broadcast, so you can see how much $$$ they have to spend - is about the "choices" in restorative materials. The "dentist" with a female patient in his chair in the background says that we don't have to choose SILVER fillings any more - because there are a range of choices - "silver, gold or natural white".

Well, kids, what is wrong with this commercial? Anything missing, by any chance?

See, if we are poisoned, it's now our OWN FAULT, because we have exercised the wrong choice.

Sad, but true. Today it is the norm not to take responsibility for your actions, but to blame someone else.

My dentist, when I told him that I had all my amalgams replaced because of the health problems from the mercury, immediately asked me if I had been eating fish! I went back in later for another 6 month check-up and just felt harrassed the whole time from comments like, "those composites don't hold up long, and when I asked about my bite problem that I now have the assistant said "sometimes we think we are making a good decision when we aren't". I told her that I had to do something, the mercury was killing me. Even though I go to church with the dentist and really respect and like him as a person, and it will cost me more money, I am going to go to a biological dentist that I have found.

I actually had my dentist get defensive and turn all red and start sweating when I told him I did not want my broken filling repaired with more mercury because it was poisonous.
He gave me the riot act about how if I had it taken out my teeth would be sensitive and I might lose them. (What? There are already lost and were the day they were filled!) And any teeth with metal in them are so sensitive to cold/hot they are painful. And of course...there is "no evidence" according to him. I told him he was entitled to his opinion and I walked out! The second dentist tried to sell me a root canal. Told me how tragic it would be if I lost a molar. Mainly, any doctor or dentist I have seen about this, denied anything! Funny, they all had mercury fillings as well.

Here in the US there are no commercials. No warning signs, nothing. Most dentist won't admit anything, they are under threat from the ADA of losing their license if they say a word.

Indirect composites last as long as amalgam.
If a dentist insists you're not being exposed to toxic levels of mercury ,ask what the toxic level is according to the EPA,CDC etc. He probably wont know. Then ask how many micrograms /merc you are exposed to per day.

I live in Canada and the dentists here also risk losing their license to practice if they tell patients mercury is toxic, they are only allowed to say that 3% of the population may be sensitive to it...a dentist told me that in confidence.

And my old dentist got so angry when I told him I was getting mine removed...he thinks also that you get more mercury from a plate of fish...I think that is a rehearsed response they learn in medical school.

I haven't seen that ad yet Carla, but I think you are right, their backs are up against the wall, thanks to the world wide web. Without the knowledge that I have found on my computer, I would probably be dead by now.

Knowledge is power, you can never have enough!!!!

I went to a mercury-free dentist a little while ago, and when I asked him if he didn't use amalgams because of the mercury, he seemed pretty nervous. He really hesitated, and then because I had told him I was likely mercury toxic already, he finally talked to me about it, although cautiously. He admitted that the ADA frowned on talking about it, and that he was NOT ALLOWED to advise patients to have their amalgams removed and replaced. The only thing he could do was to advise, for cosmetic reasons only, that patients get them taken out so that there teeth would look better. Talking about the mercury was simply not allowed. So many dentists that feel amalgams are harmful have to operate under the pretense of cosmetic dentistry....and for patients that are not into the cosmetic reasons, or wouldn't spend the money on it simply for looks, have to suffer because that's as far as most dentist can, or are willing, to go and the patients do not know the real reasons and the real harm involved. I applaud the handful of dentists who are willing to be bold enough to outright admit: amalgams are toxic and everyone should have them out. And I am still thankful for the others too, who don't openly talk about it, but at least reduce the harm and refuse to use amalgams.

This cover-up and denial is purely ridiculous. And it makes me angry. I'm angry because I have this illness myself and know countless others that do, and I'm angry because I work with autistic children and I know that this is a factor for them. To see the little boy I work with suffer....it makes me even more angry than I am for myself. And I know I'm just preaching to the choir....

Sounds good to me Tia, even if you are preaching to the choir...lol. I think the dentists finally realize that they have to get the mercury out of their practices and the only way they can do it is to do it under the guise of cosmetic dentistry. Sooner or later the mercury amalgam link to illness and death will be exposed and they are going to just slither out of danger from law suits....snakes that they are.
