I have found that licorice root is one of the best supplements to treat constipation. It isn't like senna, cascara sagrada ,castor oil, yellow dock, rhubarb, buckthorn, aloe, and other anthraquinone containing herbs that will let you go but then give you rebound constipation. Anthraquinone can also be dangerous with long term use.

Licorice root works very mildly. I also find that if I take around around 300 mg of magnesium at one time(best in the form of magnesium ascorbate) it also helps relieve constipation, especially if I swallow it with licorice root tea. Too much magnesium at once(like taking a few grams at a time that some people do with epsom salts can be dangerous).
I don't recommend taking more than 500 mg at a time of magnesium.

licorice root also boosts the adrenals and increases bile flow which is crucial for detoxification. Other herbs that can help prevent constipation are dandelion, ginger, horseradish, and cayenne. I also find that MSM helps prevent constipation.

To help prevent constipation, make sure to eat plenty of fiber, and drink plenty of water. It is also important to get enough exercise.

Licorice root is great!
