Im unsure as wheiter the algin would be able to sponge up mercury from there, or would only work in the digestive trait. It works in the digestive tract only. In fact, it does not enter the blood stream. This is why it is mandatory (in my opinion) for any liver/colon-based detox plan. We don't want mercury to be reabsorbed, and Algin can help solve that problem amazingly well.
