I said stop if the muscle weakness is too great. Expect to get symptoms during chelation. The issue is whether the symptoms are too great to tolerate.
The important thing when using ALA is to build up the dosage and not start out too high, and to preferably use the ALA together with DMSA, as that results in much less severe side effects. Make sure that you don't become constipated while chelating, as this will make you feel very horrible. You could increase your magnesium intake to help relieve the constipation. When I am constipated, a dosage of around 300 mg of magnesium at one time usually enables me to use the bathroom within around 2 hours or so without giving me diarrhea. If that doesn't help, then a cup or two of licorice root tea usually solves the problem. Since with ALA almost all the mercury is excreted through the bowels via the bile, it is crucial that one not be constipated during chelation. Many here tend to get constipated though. I think it might be due to a magnesium deficiency(a much greater than normal need for magnesium. Some claim that some of us need 1,000 mg or more a day of magnesium), or dysbiosis(candida or an overgrowth of harmful bacteria in the digestive system).
