Did Jack Hyles Fall into the Same Category as Bob
Gray?
Thanks for your kind
comments about my article.
I would rather not reply to
your questions and comments regarding Hyles and Gray since they are both
deceased, and the Hyles case goes back so far in the past. However, I decided to
deal with it again because there are many lessons Christians must learn
especially as fundamentalists. Also, there is a generation out there who is not
informed about these issues. I am also aware that this article will cost me
dearly.
You asked, “Does Jack Hyles
fall into the same category as Bob Gray?” I think so, with one caveat—Jack never
admitted to any sexual sin while Bob admitted to the arresting policeman that he
“French kissed” little girls in his Christian school and church. However, there
exists far more evidence against Hyles than against Gray. Both men are now
deceased and those of us still breathing should learn from both men: sin will
catch up with us and destroy us, our families, and ministries, and do
irreparable harm to the cause of Christ.
Yes, I’m afraid that many
contemporary preachers looked the other way in the Hyles case (and in the Gray
case). After all, he was Jack Hyles. Even now, there is a large group of church
websites that proudly identify as “Hyles” associated churches. Even if the
accusations of adultery were not true, that seems very unwise as if to say, “I
am of Apollos” or “I am of Paul.” If that is unwise and unscriptural, then
surely it would be unwise to willingly identify with a tainted or soiled person
even if it “is Jack Hyles.”
Jack was a friend who
supported me in my political work in the Indiana House of
Represent-
atives. He told me at the
beginning of my term that I could count on him to produce a thousand bodies (for
political rallies) and a thousand dollars whenever they were needed. He kept his
word.
Furthermore, he personally
won my father to Christ at my son’s high school graduation and wrote about it in
the Sword of the Lord. Moreover, he
had me preach for him at the church and college giving me the largest honorarium
I had received up to that time. He also promoted my books and tapes resulting in
us selling everything we had with us. (Some pastors are scared to death that an
evangelist may sell too many books and tapes!)
After reading Dr. Robert
Sumner’s article in his Biblical
Evangelist and attorney Voyle
Glover’s book, Fundamental Seduction: The Jack Hyles
Case and confirming much of that
information with friends who were or had been on the church or school
staff, I became convinced that the evidence against Hyles was overwhelming.. (It
is interesting that there were "some very important
insiders who verified the information in the book" according to Mr. Glover..)
The information? That Dr. Hyles had a long-time affair with Jennie
Vischik who ran his tape ministry (not his secretary as is often reported) while
her husband Vic was a faithful and energetic worker at First Baptist, Hammond.
Dr. Sumner reveals in his
new book, Fights I didn’t start and some
I did that Judy Vischik tells of hearing her mother talk to Hyles late at
night whispering “sweet nothings and pledges of eternal love into the
telephone.” That would gag a maggot!
A very close and long-time
friend of mine was a deep insider at the Hammond ministry. He knew of Hyles’
“indiscretions” for many years and even after Dr. Sumner became “the skunk that
showed up at the outdoor ladies tea” (according to Hyles worshippers), my friend
took no public position. My friend had been gone from Hammond for many years when he told me over a Washington lunch that it
was common talk around the church that there was a boy in the church who was
allegedly the son of Jack Hyles. Even then, my friend, believing the devastating
charges against Hyles, did not take a public position on the matter. I was a
little disappointed in him; however, I recently discovered that he left Hyles
years before the exposure because of Hyles’ sexual activities.
You asked, “Was his son, Dave Hyles an apple that didn't fall far from
the tree,...and did his father ever call out his son and denounce his actions?”
It was common knowledge in Indiana that David Hyles was a fornicator long
before the charges against his father were made. It seemed any female was fair
game to David (as long as she wore skirts, not slacks, after all one must have
some convictions!). Jack often said
during one of his sermons at First Baptist that when David goes to his marriage
bed, he would be pure since he had never even kissed his future wife. When Hyles made that statement it always
produced a titter throughout the auditorium because all the kids knew David was
a serial fornicator even as a teen.
When David
was called to Miller Road Baptist in Garland, Texas, the search committee asked Dr. Hyles if
he could recommend David as their pastor! Jack replied, “Well, David’s his own
man.” (That may not be an exact quote but it does carry the exact meeting.)
Evidently, the Garland people did not pursue the
question and David went to Texas with his father’s blessings. Now, how
could any man permit his son to be inflicted on an innocent church without
revealing the glaring sins in his son’s life, especially in light of the fact
that Jack was a former pastor of that church? And true to form, after a few
years, David was exposed as having multiple affairs with women in the Garland church. Then he
felt “called” to greener pastures. It is amazing that some angry husband didn’t
put him under a green pasture!
Not only was
David true to form, so was Jack who had preached “that sins don’t need to be
repented of (only forgotten); that [King] David was a spiritual man even when he
committed the twin transgressions of adultery and murder; that adultery is a
‘mistake’ but not a sin and the only difference between one who has committed it
and one who hasn’t is that the latter has the sin of adultery ‘in remission’;
that talking about someone committing adultery is worse in God’s sight than
committing it.” (From Fights I didn’t
start and some I did by Dr. Sumner.)
Jack Hyles
was basically a dishonest man in my opinion. He often made me cringe when I
heard him preach as he made himself the hero of most of his illustrations. For
many years, I said to myself, “That has to be an exaggeration. It’s simply not
true to life.” I never mentioned that publicly until now. Another friend of
mine, pastor of a large church, often did the same thing although not nearly as
often as Jack; and since there was no way to prove it, I kept quiet.
Another
tragic thing in the ministry of Hyles is that too many of us liked him,
respected him, and some feared him and kept silent. This could be seen every
time he preached at various fundamental Baptist meetings. Non-thinking pastors
would whoop and holler and yell “amen” when he made absolutely outrageous
statements without any Bible support. Does that mean that many pastors don’t
listen to what is being preached or were they impressed by his bravado and
volume? Or did they simply want to
be seen and heard? Maybe they were
deaf?
How do I
explain decent, intelligent, and good preachers that still defend Hyles? Not
sure I can. Some pastors have never really looked at this issue, fearful of what
they will find so they carry on since after all it doesn’t affect them at this
time. Others have looked at the evidence and are honestly convinced that Jack
Hyles was not sexually involved with Jennie or any other woman. Others will say
that he was probably guilty but lest we do more harm to the cause of Christ,
let’s forget it and move on. Still others, a pathetic group, are fanatics who
will not even consider that Hyles could do any wrong, and declare that all the
evidence was contrived, the accusers are jealous liars, incompetents, voyeurs,
fools, mean-spirited haters, and should all crawl back into their holes and let
them do their work in the pattern taught them by Hyles.
Hyles was
notorious for demanding total obedience from his subordinates; however, only God
deserves total, unquestioned obedience. I heard him boast about how his
assistants would jump off a building if Jack told them to do so. Another
associate confessed that he would kill someone if ordered to do so by Hyles.
That is cultic and our critics have a right to point that out. It is past time for us, even laymen, to call out
preachers who preach unscriptural, outrageous things just to get a crowd or to
satisfy something deep inside.
Hyles
worshippers will not consider the possibility that Hyles could have horribly
sinned but since he was human, obviously they are wrong. When the accounts
surfaced about Hyles, his followers acted like fanatics by threatening Hyles’
accusers.
The Hyles
ministry is known for divorce, remarriage, and being soft on immorality even to
the point of defending child molesters. One case involved a bus worker/deacon
who molested a little girl as they sat on the back row of a Sunday School class!
The class teacher reported the molestation and the deacon was convicted even
though Hyles came to his defense with a full page newspaper ad. Jack took the
position that there must be two witnesses to find a person guilty of anything,
and I think that is reasonable; however, you don’t need two witnesses to investigate an allegation. He
considered most reports of sinful activity as “rumors.”
I remind my
critics that the Apostle Paul told the Corinthians “it was reported commonly that there is
fornication among you.” Paul followed up by dealing with the sin, something
Hyles refused to do. He had to have two witnesses. He said that if he walked
into Dr. Roberson’s office (or Lester Roloff’s) and saw him on the floor on top
of his secretary, he would assume he was giving her mouth-to-mouth
resuscitation. When Jack said that in preachers’ meetings, many attendees waved
handkerchiefs and their Bibles.
They thought it was principled preaching. I thought it was pathetic.
Paul warned
us about following human leaders. Many Independent Baptists and Southern
Baptists are guilty of idolatry. Some have made Hyles a member of the Trinity
and that would be stupid, sinful, as well as silly even if Hyles had been as
pure as the driven snow.
It is
dangerous and unwise to make a “Baptist saint” out of any living man, especially
one who cannot qualify as being “blameless” as was true of Hyles and Gray. I
have just done a study of Independent Baptist churches on the Internet who
identify, almost boast of being “Hyles” churches. It is helpful when a church
identifies with a type of music or a Christian college or their stand on a
doctrine or if they have a school, since such information is helpful to seekers
trying to find a good church. However, it is foolish and dangerous to identify
with a person, even a godly person.
In my
research to discover how many churches publically identify with Jack Hyles, I
looked at Alaska, Indiana, Tennessee, and
Alabama as
representative of the nation. In Alaska, I discovered there are 61 listed
churches and 50 of them identified with the King James and only two identified
with Hyles. Two more identified with Sam Gipp.
Than I jumped
to Alabama and
discovered that out of 250 listed churches 155 identified with the King James
Bible, five identified with Hyles and six with Peter Ruckman.
In Tennessee there were 220 listed churches and all
identified with King James Bible, eight with Hyles, two with Ruckman, two with
Gipp, one with the Sword and only two
with Tennessee
Temple University. Eleven church sites identified
with Crown
College.
I then went
to Indiana and
discovered there were 160 listed churches and 87 identified with King James, 22
with Hyles and two with Ruckman. I was deeply distressed that not one in
Indiana or any
other state identified with Don Boys! (Written with tongue placed firmly in
cheek.)
My conclusion
is a surprise. I expected more churches to identify with Hyles; however, it is
shocking that anyone does. It is almost as shocking that churches would identify
with any man as a few did with Roberson, Ruckman, Gipp, etc. Of course, we
cannot blame those men. They did not seek the identification.
I’m almost
sorry you asked my opinion since this article will cost me dearly in many ways.
I do hope that my long time friends who write me will deal with the facts and
not my possible motives. After all, do my motives really matter to anyone except
me? I will expect my critics to deal with the evidence. Yelling, frothing at the
mouth, grinding teeth are not evidence for the defense—or the prosecution.
I think it is
time for many Hyles followers to humbly apologize for mistreatment (although
sincere at the time) of Robert Sumner, Voyle Glover, and others who showed
commitment, courage, and convictions by dealing with a very sensitive and
unpleasant issue. Furthermore, an apology is due hundreds of missionaries and
evangelists who were dropped because they could not “support Jack Hyles 100
percent.”
Thanks for
giving me credit for sincerely trying to “promote godliness in this present
age.”
Pastors please read. We are going to do some meetings and
attend the gradations of three of our grandchildren in May and need to book
along the way. If your church is along our route, please contact me about a
three-day meeting or a single service. We have a grandson graduating from
Kindergarten in Indianapolis, a granddaughter
graduating from high school in the Chicago area,
and a granddaughter graduating from BBC in Springfield. We leave the Chattanooga area May 12 and can book Sunday, the 16 from
Springfield, MO
to Indianapolis.
That would be churches in MO, IA, IL, or IN for that date. Then we need to book
the 23 in IN or IL. Finally, we can book May 30 in IL, IN, or northern KY. We
can also book some mid-week services as well.
Evolutionists: An Embarrassment to Real Scientists!
Don Boys,
Ph.D.
Hey, it’s getting embarrassing! Another “missing link” is
still missing after a few months exposure to science and common sense. I am
referring to Ida, revealed last spring by Norwegian paleontologist Jorn Hurum
and his colleagues who assured us Ida was “an unusually complete prehistoric
primate fossil.” The dog and pony
show that followed in May of 2009 on “ABC News,” “Good Morning America,”
“Nightline,” “A & E,” “The New York
Times,” etc., portrayed Ida “as a blockbuster discovery nothing short of an
“eighth wonder of the world” that would offer a look at one of mankind's
earliest evolutionary ancestors. Afraid not.
We heard all that before with Piltdown Man, Nebraska Man,
the famous horse series, peppered moths of England, Ernst Haeckel, etc. One
tragic example of evolution’s embarrassing results is
the silly, now totally discredited teaching of vestigial organs. It was commonly
believed by non-thinking evolutionists and atheists that the tonsils, adenoids,
appendix and about 200 other human organs were totally unnecessary. If they had
declared “unknown” rather than unnecessary (there is a difference, you know) I
would have agreed; however, now we know that all those organs are necessary, many having to do with
the immune system. Moreover, uninformed doctors removed those organs in hundreds
of thousands of children weakening their ability to fight disease. I deal with
such embarrassing frauds in my book, Evolution: Fact, Fraud, or Faith!
available at www.cstnews.com .
After evolutionists admit they
made fools of themselves by promoting cockamamie theories to shore up their
religion of evolution, they should admit they cannot provide the answers to the
beginning of life; the Cambrian explosion; design of the universe; the absence
of transitional fossils; the anomalies in the geologic column; inaccuracies in
radiometric dating; why evolution suddenly stopped; how males and females
evolved at the same location and time in history; where the principles of the
scientific laws came from and did they come before or after the "big bang"?
Furthermore, what was the catalyst for the big bang? And where did the cosmic
egg (that allegedly exploded) come from? Maybe the cosmic chicken laid it! For
sure, evolutionists have laid many an egg! And rotten at that. However, they
never learn.
Ida is only one of many embarrassments for fanatical
evolutionists. A new report published March 5, 2010, by David Knowles in AOL News suggests the
“47-million-year-old fossil” touted as "the missing link" between humans and
early primates, appears to be an ancestor to lemurs (a creature in Madagascar
with a long snout, large ears, and a long tail) according to Erik Seiffert, a
fossil hunter at New York's Stony Brook University.
Therefore, the “missing link” is still missing! Breaks my
heart.
Scientist Blythe Williams and three colleagues, writing
in a paper published last week in the Journal of Human Evolution, “found no
evidence that Ida represents a missing link.” Of course, the media that promoted
the Ida hype will not apologize for their eagerness to support evolution and
kick creationists in the teeth.
Knowles quotes a Texas
evolutionist as saying, "Many lines of evidence indicate that Darwinius [Ida] has nothing at all to do with
human evolution," said Chris Kirk, associate professor of anthropology at the
University of Texas at Austin. When will evolutionists learn to stop
jumping to conclusions and suppress their religious enthusiasm until they can
really support their silly theory?
First of all, evolution is speculation, a guess, a hunch,
a hypotheses, a postulant, an assumption, maybe even a theory, but only fools
use the fossil record to prove the myth of evolution. It might be wise to remind
everyone that fossils do not come with a date stamped on them. The age of a
fossil is determined by the strata in which it is found and the strata date is
determined by the fossils found therein! I was taught such non-thinking is a
tautology or arguing in circles. Nevertheless, evolutionists do that going
around and around and where they stop nobody knows. Well, they usually stop, for
a while, when the television cameras are turned off.
Secondly, we must understand that there are no
intermediate fossils showing a creature with half a wing and half a leg. If
evolution were true, there would be billions of them all over the earth.
Thirdly, all the alleged “missing links” and ape men have
turned out to be frauds perpetrated by quirky and desperate evolutionists, or
either apes or men—but not ape men.
The only people who believe in the gradualism of
Darwin are
deceived people, fools, half-wits, and college professors who are paid for
teaching it. I am shocked that any educated, honest person confesses to believe
in the fairy tale of evolution. Evolutionists are an embarrassment to real
scientists and are like blind men in a dark basement looking for a black cat
that isn’t there. So sad. But only a few dare call it
quackery!

Panic on Wall Street?
Don Boys,
Ph.D.
One of the oldest French banks, Société Générale, tells
clients how to prepare for potential global collapse within the next two years
according to a headline in London’s Telegraph, Dec. 2, 2009! That was a
“global” collapse! And some of my friends suggest that I am an extremist! Yes, I have said
that panic (an out-of-control response to economic collapse) was coming to the
U.S. and the world economy not
because I am a prophet but because I can connect the dots. Moreover, I expect
the panic to reach Main
Street where chaos will reign.
For a few years, I have been warning that panic is coming to the market. When that happens,
everyone will know because Main
Street will feel it bad. When the stock market was
over 10,000 and gold was under $300.00, I told a stockbroker friend that the
market would fall to 5,000 and gold would go to $2000. Recently, I told him I
was fearful that he might have jumped from his penthouse apartment because of
market volatility and massive fluctuations. Not yet, but he’s sitting on the
ledge! Most brokers say that now is a great buying opportunity, but if you keep
dealing with a broker that’s what you will be--broke. Others say, “go with the
flow," but you will likely go down the drain!
I have been trying to get
people to get out of the market (unless they have taken precautions) for almost
ten years, but they heard talk of a 36,000 Dow (from people who benefited from
such talk) and what do I know! Some friends and subscribers did cash out and
have called or written to thank me. Others stayed in hoping to recoup their
losses. I think every investor should take advantage of any temporary market
surge to minimize their losses–cash out. After all, something is better than nothing. The
panic hasn't started yet! Wait until masses of people call their mutual fund and
get a recording or a constant busy signal! If you can’t reach them, you can’t
sell. When everyone runs for the exit at the same time, many people are trampled
in the stampede. Don't get caught.
We still have politicians
and economists telling anyone who will listen that the economy is not the stock
market (and it isn't), and the economy is strong (and it isn't). However, no one
is foolish enough to say that the stock market has no effect on the overall
economy. Of course it does. If the market plunges to below 5,000, it will take
the economy with it—the jobs market, the housing market, commercial markets,
manufacturing, retailing, etc.
When blue-chip companies
such as Chrysler, General Motors, Ford, Cisco, IBM, Safeway, General Mills, U.S.
Airways, Avon, Big Lots, Lucent, Sprint Nextel, Xerox, Campbell Soup, Revlon,
K-Mart, Rite Aid, Six Flags, Beazer Homes USA,
Harrah’s Entertainment, Blockbuster, Clear Channel
Communications, and Enron have major problems (and may fold or have already
folded!), then they will pull others down with them. It's like the giant trees
in California
that fall from infestation or lightning and they always take a hundred smaller
trees with them. No large company goes into the tank alone. Some of the largest
banks have lost billions recently because of that fact.
MSMBC
reported in January of this year, “A slew of American heavyweight companies,
including Caterpillar, Pfizer, Sprint Nextel, Home Depot and General Motors,
announced cuts Monday adding up to 45,000 jobs
lost. What's more, a group of business economists predicted many more job losses
in the year ahead.”
When
companies like Caterpillar, the major producer of large earth moving equipment,
are cutting way back then other
industries, especially in construction, are in similar or worse condition.
Caterpillar announced it was slashing 5,000 jobs on top of about 15,000 they
have already cut. Sprint Nextel Corp will eliminate about 8,000 positions; Home
Depot will cut 7,000 jobs, and Pfizer announced slashing about 8,000 jobs. Yet,
in light of those facts, some “experts” tell us “the worst is over.” “Recover is on the way.” Let me remind
you that the experts said the same thing 80 years ago!
Much of our trouble is self-inflicted by government and
business leaders. Many government leaders are socialists or at least
anti-business while others are only stupid. We have taxed and regulated
businesses until they fled the country for greener pastures and can anyone blame
them? We can lay guilt on them for such “un-American activities” but they have
to look at the bottom line and it is showing massive losses. Therefore,
Mexico, India, Bangladesh, here we come. And jobs,
there they go.
Businesses have been driven out of the U.S. by
a federal and state tax rate of 39.1%. And those experts, wearing rose colored glasses, are wrong
again when they suggest that in 2010 economic problems will peak followed by a slow recovery.
Business owners and private individuals will not spend money, especially if they
don’t have any, in an atmosphere where they have no assurance of future tax
rates and regulatory policies. They might have a little more confidence if the
authorities would get off their chests and stop choking them to death. However,
when politicians stop choking citizens, they usually pick their pockets! You
just can’t win.
I am
suggesting that the party is over. Difficult days are ahead for all of us. It is
time to save, get out of debt, cut back, make do, do without, plant a garden,
fill a large pantry with food and water, and buy some gold and silver. Abraham
did!

Looks as if
my MLK article put your knickers in a knot. Unpleasant facts will do that at
times. You wrote about “fallacies”
but did not point out any. Wonder why? An honest person would have done so and
would have tried to help me with the “truth.”
You made a
rather dumb statement when you wrote, “Never before have I seen so much of
someones (sic) arguments made up of
attacking the oppostition (sic) and substituting oinions (sic) for facts.” Again, no examples. And since I was
writing about MLK, of course, I dealt with the facts that would normally be
perceived as an “attack.” Did you expect me to praise the way he always dressed
nicely and drove a clean car and didn’t receive many speeding tickets. Or how
about how he seemed to be kind to kids and didn’t kick around his dogs. Note
that you did not identify any “oinions” (I suppose you meant opinions or maybe
you did mean oinions, whatever they
are.)
