Hey everyone!

Last time I was here I posted that my ulcerative colitis had flared while taking a herbal mercury detox product. Silly me to try a product that detox through the colon when you have a inflamed colon. Learn the hard way.

Good news was that I stopped the flare in 1 week by stopping the detox and eating the correct foods and supplements.

Then about 1.5 months later my antioxidant supplement changed up their formula and moved ALA from a supplement that I was avoiding to one that I was taking. I read on this site that ALA pulls mercury out of soft tissue and dumps it through the colon. NOT good for me!

So 3 weeks of taking 30mg of ALA a day I went into a SEVERE flare! (Severe cramping, Bleeding, Diarrhea) I started on a Elemental diet (predigested shakes) to get thing under control, About 1 week into the flare I found the ALA in my supplement. I stopped the ALA and my flare stopped 3 days later.

I'm back on real food now and everything has calmed down.

I know without a doubt that these 2 flares were cause by Mercury. Which I know has to come out if I ever want to get healed. I know this sounds crazy to most people but I will try to chelate again. I will no longer try to do this on my own. I found a doctor that specializes in EDTA. From what I read EDTA dumps mercury through the urine so that sounds good for me.

Thanks for the info on the ALA, I could have been stuck in the flare for a while if I did not know that ALA dumps mercury in the colon.

Hey, im fairly new here. I've had mercury poisoning for about 2 yrs. I think EDTA is a good idea for you since you have a problems with your colon. I had several EDTA IV's..went pretty well for me..didnt feel sick or anything. Give it a try. Im now on oral DMSA and ALA..i see little improvement. Hope this helps

I'm going to talk to the Doctor about DMSA, from what I read that dumps through the urine. I'm not sure how useful taking DMSA will be if I can't take ALA.

I'm sorry to hear this patman. I know of no other brain chelating agent except cilantro.....Cutler does not tend to recommend this as a first choice brain chelating agent, because it is not yet understood how it works and what protocol to use for it. Therefore he cannot recommend it's safety regarding side effects/redistribution. However, it apparently can be tried for those who cannot tolerate ALA for whatever reason and if it works? Great! But I'd test for reactions and go easy.

However, if you are using DMSA on the correct protocol, you might get away with it more. The ongoing intake of DMSA may help with side effects. I would hate to put you wrong and make anything unnecessarily worse, but if you cannot use ALA, I am unsure what else you could use for the brain/nervous system....

I"m pretty sure cilantro chelates metals into the urine....but I am not 100%.

Thanks Bex. I thought Cilantro chelates through urine too, but my herbal detox I was taking first primary ingredient was Cilantro. But it did have other things too to help flush metals out. Here is the product I was taking when the first flare hit.
http://www.dragonriverherbals.com/pdf/detox.pdf

When I saw my nutritionist this evening My body still showed that it was not tolerating any Cilantro products. Sooo Cilantro and ALA dont like me. My options seem limited.

Maybe I should just go old school and stick to saunas and exercise.

Even though the flares sucked at the time, it has really strengthen my resolve to get this junk out of me. And I'm actaully feeling OK right now, BMs are normal and no brainfog. I will enjoy it while it lasts.

I will have about 2 months to heal before I to chelate again. All fun over here.

You normally want to save cilantro for later in the detox process. It moves mercury out of deeper central nervous system -stores. This is not normally what you want to do until later on.

Here is a link with more information about detox types and cilantro:

Thanks for the Link Russ. Good info

Another mistake I had made was not learning enough about mercury Detoxing. I had spent so much time learning about Ulcerative colitis, nutrition, diet, supplements etc...I just was not up to the task of becoming a mercury expert. For once I just wanted to take something given to me by my doctor or nutritionist and not have to worry about it.

Oh well it is all in the past. I have to move foward. Unless anyone around here has a time machine. laugh

Hi Patman,

You're welcome.

I am unsure how far away from amalgam removal you are? Because as Russ said, taking products like cilantro (and ALA) too early when blood levels are still high is not a good idea. Because the still high body levels of mercury can be taken INTO the brain as these chelating agents cross the blood brain barrier.

The blood levels should be reduced first (DMSA is a good one for that). So that there is less risk of further uptake to the brain.

Also, I found personally that if I took chelating agents any other way than the way Cutler prescribed, I very quickly shunted metals into various areas like the gut and had pretty serious reactions from it. In fact, at one stage, when I slipped up on Cutler's protocol and took the chelators too far apart, I wound up in much pain from redistributing those metals. This caused bowel upsets, worsened candida etc. I was unable to continue chelating because of it and had to deal with the now worsened candida condition. Once I got that back under control, I resumed the chelation at small doses and every 3-4 hours (and did not slip up) and was able to start improving again and reverse some of the redistribution impact.

This goes for ALA also. So though you maybe reacting the avenues they chelate metals through, it maybe that it's too early to use brain/organ chelators, and/or you may find the protocol itself is causing too much redistribution and unnecessary flare ups in those problems areas.

Saunas and exercise (in moderation) would be helpful. There is always a certain amount of redistribution, it's unavoidable, but I guess the key is to minimise it as much as possible to reduce the erratic movement of mercury into worse/more sensitive areas or even the brain itself. I found my treadmill walking to be a SURPRISING help towards detoxing.

If you ever do decide to try Cutler's protocol (whether it's with DMSA, ALA or both at the sametime), I'd suggest very small doses. If it's DMSA? It's every 4 hours (or more often if a person finds it cuts down further on symptoms). ALA is every 3 hours (one can extend that to every 4 hours during night time dosing if it helps with sleep, but return to every 3 during the day). If taking both at the sametime? Then they should be taken every 3 hours (as you would with ALA alone). Again, can extend to every 4 during nighttime dosing.

Again Patman, you may simply not tolerate any of this at this time. But it's an idea and a different style of trying such chelators to see if it's helpful at all.

Hello Russ...

What is the fastest was to get rid of toxix metals? What did you use to eliminate toxic metals in your body?

Well, I used protein powder because of the cysteine (a sulfur-bearing amino acid) it contains, plus I used chlorella. I took about 15 tablets with each meal.

Let me say, however, that I knew nothing about mercury detox when I started. I had only learned that mercury was my problem a few weeks earlier so I had little time for research.

If I were to do it again, I would probably use DMSA, protein, and sweating (sauna).

I also eventually started taking Algin when I finally learned about its benefits with mercury detox. It really helped with symptoms (prevents re-absorption), but it is not a chelator.

Bex, I had my amalgams removed over the summer 1 quadrent every 4 weeks. I started the herbal/cilantro detox from dragonriver about 2 weeks after (September 09) This detox gave me severe headaches and fatigue on the lowest recommended dosage. So I cut that in amount in half. 1 month into the detox i started a mini flare and stopped the detox and the flare stopped.

About a month later I started taking the ALA 30mg unintentionaly. I started the severe flare only 3 weeks into taking ALA. Stopped taking ALA that was about 4 weeks ago. Flare stopped

On the diet front I have done the Candida diet alomost 2 years ago and today I eat almost all organic meat, low carb, no processed foods with the Candida diet as the foundation. Candida is no longer an issue for me.

On the link that Russ gave me a few things that caught my eye was both ALA and Cilantro both dump 90% of the mercury in the intestines. Bad bad for me. Also if you have mercury and aluminium issues things are possible 100X worse. Aluminium and mercury are my two highest metals from my hair analysis.

It appears I did not detox the blood first and did everything wrong. Except the diet.

It looks like I have DMSA, EDTA, DMPS, sauna and sweating are my options. Not sure how I will do any deep chelating but lets start with the blood first and go from there.

Hi Patman,

Well, do not despair. I didn't have a clue about most things back in the early stages of amalgam removal. Not only got amalgam removal without protection for most of my amalgams (except the last 2), but took anything and everything to mobilise mercury. If it moved mercury? I took it.

Later on I began to understand more about the manner of moving mercury and how important it actually was and why I was suffering so HORRIBLY whenever I tried moving it around with random protocols and certain products. I had no idea there was a way it could be done to make life so much easier and the removal much more effective.

Yes, you certainly do have options and I'd personally opt for either DMSA or DMPS (Oral) Cutler style for mercury. DMSA was actually excellent and more than enough for me for a LONG time. It worked! As long as I used it on the right protocol. Apparently oral DMPS is even better and only has to be taken every 8 hours, instead of 4 hours (for DMSA). It is probably much more expensive though. Neither is cheap.

Saunas should help too, but don't push yourself too hard. I had to remind myself that it's not a race. Do only what you are able to handle. Also, I found that if I had detoxed or experimented and caused redistribution, that often Cutler's protocol (using DMSA) could improve or even cure it! Though time helps, I was able to make a difference much quicker and more efficiently using DMSA.

Great that you're doing the diet. I hate to imagine where I'd be without it or without knowing how much help it would be. Amazing how much of an impact certain food can have! But I guess that's what happens when one has a weakened immunity.
