I am 42 years old and I have suffered from obsessive compulsive disorder my entire life. I was treated by a psychiatrist for eleven years but the tretment failed and the side effects of the drugs that I took nearly killed me. I have been searching for an effective treatment for a few years now. Last September I went to a DO that specializes in alternative medicine and he tested me for heavy metals. The results of the test showed a very elevated level of mercury. I had ten infusions of DMPS and then I was tested again and I excreted more mercury on the second test than I did on the first test. I'm going through ten more DMPS infusions and I hope that I'm not wasting my time and my money.
I know that most people with chronic mercury poisoning have a lot of amalgam fillings but I only had one filling and I had that replaced last October.
Has anyone suffered from a psychiatric disorder for a long period of time and then recovered after chelation therapy?

I only had three fillings yet they were affecting me pretty badly. It all depends on how well your body can deal with the mercury I guess.
I think I've heard people's (Demi. or LynnR if I recall) OCD getting better after removal, or just when they take Algin. You'd have to ask them.

Hi Buckeye.
I have OCD (self-diagnosed) and have had it since I was a child. I started to have fillings at about nine or ten years old (I can't remember exactly) and by the age of 12, I was locked in the ritualistic world of OCD.
I didn't know what had happened to me, why I was suffering like this all of a sudden. I had been a confident and happy child previously and I was very scared. When my parents started questioning me about my behaviour and talking of going to see psychiatrists I got even more scared and I hide the rituals from them. Instead of the physical ones I turned more and more to the mental ones.
This terrible existence went on and on until I was about 17. At that age my anxiety started to drop and I became "almost" normal - but some of the mental rituals still haunt me.
I never understood why I had the sudden change. Everything I'd ever read about OCD said that it was incurable and the only treatment was drugs. I put it down to becoming a Christian - which certainly helped in alleviating my anxiety somewhat to believe there was a God in control of the universe and that my rituals were meaningless.
Now I believe it was because:
1. I was no longer getting amalgam fillings - there is high mercury release when they are put in.
2. I no longer had braces.
3. I became a vegetarian so I no longer ate fish (which can contain high mercury, especially Tuna).
At the same time I started to get the OCD, I also started to get very bad migraine attacks (lights, shakes, vomiting). Also I started to wake up with numb/pins and needles. I started to get light sensitivity, chemical sensitivity, and my skin was very sensitive to the touch. I was also not getting regular periods and vaginal thrush was a problem. I had to have medication for this at 19. Also I was getting bad floaters in my eye. I was feeling suicidal a lot and my skin was spotty and blackheads were a problem (still are).
I was constantly going to the doctor telling them something was wrong with me. I mentioned my anxiety problem, but didn't go into the OCD because I knew, from reading, that the answer would be drugs and therapy, and I didn't want to go that route. The OCD was, at this time, manageable.
Ihad a root filling 7 years ago, and since then my health has got worse. Within a year of it I was having muscle pains - the doctor diagnosed RSI and inflammatory drugs. Also, within 2 years of this filling, my periods almost stopped completely. I have brain fog almost all the time, depression, fatigue, and have lost interest in so much things I used to love.
Last Christmas I had treatment on this tooth - shaved off the top of the amalgam without using oxygen or precautions - and the following week I had very bad pins and needles, so much I had to get dressed and walk around the hotel I was staying in on holiday. I started to get very bad panic attacks and intensification of my OCD symptoms - compulsion to blink, rituals, tics.
The doctors have tested me for years and come up with anxiety disorder, PCOS, RSI, labyrinthitis, rhinitis and various other things. The solution is always drugs.
What lead me here was that while I was looking up for "alternative" solutions, I read a story about a child who had OCD who gotbetter after mercury amalgam removal and chelation.
Only last week I read about a man who suffered from OCD having a 99% cure after removal of the fillings.
At this point in time I have about 8 fillings, but when the OCD started I didn't have that many. I started to get the problem as soon as I started with fillings. So I believe it's possible to get OCD from few fillings. You may not be able to excrete toxins, you may be very sensitive to mercury, or we may have some biologial predispositin to OCD that is triggered by mercury.
Also, it's possible to get elevated levels of mercury from eating fish. Aswell as that, vaccines used to contain mercury and some still do. If you eat seafood, I would suggest giving it up.
I have found relief from my symptoms by following diet advice for mercury toxicity. At the summer my compulsions to blink was very bad, but since taking alginate, the edge has gone off it. I probably need to take more alginate that I am at present and be more meticulous in following a good diet that I am. But the alginate is the only thing I have found to help. I tried magnesium (which I am still taking) but it didnt' help by itself. I can feel the difference with the alginate. I was scared of taking it at first (have a phobia of taking things) but now I wouldn't like to go through the day without it!
If you stick here, I think we can help each other I may not get better as quickly as I would like after removal as I am a vegetarian and that's supposed to hamper the recovery process, but I am sure we can support each other and give tips on what is helping.
I am 99% sure mercury triggered my OCD, and before I pay for any other kind of treatment for my problems or go on anxiety drugs I am going to see if removing my fillings following all safety precautions helps. If not, then I will look into other possible causes, but I feel very sure, given the timing of my illness and all the other things, that I have Amalgam Illness, not OCD and not PCOS.

Thanks for your very long and complete post, Demi. I am fond of seafood and in light of what I know now I am going to cut way back on my seafood intake.
I am in terrible pain now and I have a lot of suicidal thoughts. At this point I really don't want to go on living. Like you I am a Christian but I don't know how much longer I can go on.
After the third DMPS infusion all of my symptoms were aggravated and I became intensely suicidal. I know that there is a lot of controversy regarding the use of DMPS but from my own research I found that it's probably the best chelating agent for mercury. I think that I detoxified too fast during the first round of infusions. If I do badly this time I'm thinking about dropping back to biweekly infusions. What do you think?

I remember another member also saying they had suicidal thoughts, emphasis on the past tense.
Also, I found fish often affected me a lot. I'd completely cut it out if I were you.
If you belief in God is failing, believe that there is a cure to all this, other people on this board can confirm that.

This could well be your prime souce of mercury. I used to eat a lot of tuna as a child, and it is loaded with mercury. I would agree with Steve and say cut it out completely if you can, but I know that is easier said than done. I know that dairy isn't good for people with mercury poisoning, but I am having a hard time following a strictly vegan diet as I love chocolate and cheese. I am trying though, as I know it is better for me if I can resist the cravings

I understand. I feel the same very often. I am suffering a lot at the moment too and sometimes it feels like the future is hopeless. I still get suicidal thoughts at least 3 times a week and I cry a lot. But now that we know what is causing our suffering, there is every hope that we can get better. I try to look at it from the view that we've got through the worst. When we are less toxic, we will see a brighter future. When I was a child I didn't think I could take anymore. I just wanted to be like other kids. I wanted to be able to get out of bed and go downstairs for breakfast like a regular kid, but I'd have to do rituals first. I would sometimes be crying while doing them. It was hell those years. But I did get improvement and I am optimistic I will again. I'm glad I didn't kill myself at 14 when I was the most serious of doing it.

I personally am not going down this route, but I wouldn't like to make the decision on behalf of someone else. I'm going to try slow detox as I don't want to release more mercury from my body than is necessary. For a couple of years I've been eating coriander regularly and it may well have aggravated my recent symptoms. I personally am going to go gentle detox with the hope of gradual improvement, but I wouldn't like to advise someone else as I don't know enough on the subject and am still learning. But maybe you could stop the DMPS for a whilem if they are not helping, and go gentle for a bit. I would definitely buy some alginate, magnesium, vitamin e, vitamin c, selenium and some flax seed oil (I don't take it every day but I do a couple of times a week). This might help to catch wandering mercury in your body without mobilising more.

Thanks for your encouragement, Demi. I was able to read your first post with a little bit of difficulty. I'm taking nutritional supplements from Truehope ( www.truehope.com). Is anyone else here involved in that program?

I was reading a post from last year and I noted that there is some concern that alpha lipoic acid used early in detox is not a good thing because it can put more mercury into the brain.
My doctor prescribed 400 mg/day of alpha lipoic acid for me and I am having severe problems with my detox. Should I stop taking the ALA for now?

Hey, Demi, you spoke about having to do rituals when you were a child; I read that Queen Elizabeth II was the same way, and I don't know how she got cured, but as you may know, she has for decades been going to a homeopathic doctor. I have heard they are very good for such neurological problems. So, why not give it a shot.

Although I believe ALA is very helpful for detox, I believe it should not be done until some preliminary detox has been done first. It especially should not be done immediately after removal of amalgam fillings. It can cause severe symptoms. I have found that doctors often put people on overly agressive detox programs without regard to the extreme toxicity of mercury. I would also always take Algin when taking any detox or chelating agent.

Thanks for your advice, Russ. I'm going to cut out the alpha lipoic acid and go to biweekly DMPS infusions. The weekly infusions are tearing me apart. The doctor doesn't want to lower the dosage of DMPS but he said I can take infusions less frequently if I can't stand to detoxify at this rate.

I am 99% sure mercury caused this, not anything else, and the dentist I am seeing at the moment feels the same way. People have had recovery from OCD after removal and I never had the problem before the fillings. I'm not going to see anyone else unless I don't get better and I'm certainly not going to see someone who will try to convince me that mercury is not causing it. I am 99% sure it is responsible for most of my health problems. I have neurological problems because I have mercury poisoning. That's why I am at this forum, to get support. If you can't give it - this is the second time you've told me that my problem is not due to mercury - then please don't say anything. I have no support for my belief that I am poisoned from my family or my friends. I need that here. Sorry to have to say this, but it's how I feel. PS I don't at all mean that in a rude way, I always appreciate your input as you have interesting things to say It's just that I need encouragement and support in this. Until I get the fillings out and detox, I won't know which are genuine health problems or not. But the logical thing to do is get the fillings out first and detox before running to other doctors. All my health problems are symptoms of toxicity. I think I got sicker than a lot of people with fillings because
1. Had about 10 before the age of 16 2. Had braces including one to bite into for 10 hours a day, and biting releases more mercury. 3. Am probably very sensitive to mercury - I can't afford the test 4. low resistance to toxins 5. Genetical vulnerabilities to certain conditions that mercury aggravates.
Not everyone who has fillings will get as many problems as I have and some will get none, but that doesn't mean the mercury can't be responsible for a lot of problems in certain individuals.

Demi, you are on the right path. When it is known that mercury is a neurotoxin, a poison second only to plutonium (!) what amazes me is that more people are not sick! Getting the mercury can be nothing but a benefit. I am convinced that all my illness is due, at least in part, to mercury, and as a fellow at our church says, -Getting the mercury out can be nothing but a plus. Even if I don't improve as much as I want to, if I stop going downhill, that in itself, is worthwhile- because, I tell you, I was headed for MS and/or Alzheimer's.

Buck, I would add this... Don't have DMPS on the same day of the week each week. There is a 7-day immune cycle that can really cause havoc if you do this. Also, many don't recommend DMPS because it's pretty rough on the system and can redistribute mercury. I would not only recommend Algin, but I would be taking: DMPS mobilizes a lot of mercury. It's important to prevent it from doing further damage.

Russ, I'm planning to get DMPS infusions at two week intervals because I can't tolerate the weekly treatments. Do you know anything about Truehope? That's where I'm getting my vitamin/mineral supplements.
Thanks again for your advice.

Buckeye,
Tthough I don't have suicidal thoughts, I have had many days in the past that were so bad or just days that I woke up with this feeling that I just couldn't go on anymore and if it weren't for my children, I would have been fine with going on right then. Magnesium helps me have a more positve outlook. I really do thing that the mercury in our brains messes up the proper thought pathways. I also found that I need to get out in the sun as much as possible especially in the winter.

Hi Missy. I find winter very hard. Not only psychologically as there are so few hours of daylight, but the cold weather is tough on my body. If I can, I want to move to a warmer country when I have finished my studies.

Magnesium is used in the production of ATP, the energy source for the cells in our body. For this reason, magnesium has the potential life moods and increase energy.
Thought this may help shed some light.

I also strongly believe my OCD was caused by mercury poisoning. I've had it most of my life. A few months ago I had myself tested and found I have Chronic Mercury Poisoning from my 15 amalgams and that I am highly sensative to mercury, and other heavy metals such as nickel (which i have very high levels of as well from my crowns). i had two amalgam removal procedures done and have two more to go. Can't wait to get finished so I can start chelating. I have a post on an OCD site telling of how this is like an experiment to see if there is a connection between mercury poisoning and OCD. It makes total sense since the mercury that leaches from your amalgams is mostly stored in your brain where it interferes with serotonin production. Low serotonin levels in the synaptic cleft is believed to be the cause of OCD. I'm hoping once the mercury is purged from my brain my serotonin levels should return to normal. I can only wait and see.

Hi. I had root canal tooth extracted almost a month ago, and bone cleaned to remove old infection, and some of my OCD symptoms have almost gone - and that is with 8 surface (very shallow) fillings left.
My anxiety at night is higher than usual, and my physical symptoms seem a little worse - my muscles feel weaker than usual and hypersensitive skin - but I was starting to get chronic tic like symptoms and counting symptoms that I hadn't had since late childhood. They are virtually gone - I find myself not counting steps on the stairs, not counting brush strokes and not feeling compelled to move my head etc.
I still have a bad compulsion to blink, but omega 3 supplement seems to be helping - it's early days. Unfortunately I can't find one that isn't flax seed oil, but it's so processed and purified that the amount of phytoestrogens in it is probably minimal. I'm not sure if it's making my muscles weaker or not, but I've lost 14 lbs over the past few months since cutting out dairy, and that's probably making my muscles weaker aswell.
But I can definitely feel the difference mentally from getting the tooth out - it was the biggest chunk of amalgam in my mouth, the biggest voltage charge, and biggest tooth that I kept grinding (I have bruxism). I'm also taking magnesium every day, and that might be helping.
