I can understand your concerns! But think of it this way. Not only is mercury one of the most toxic substances known to man, but it accummulates in the body tissues/organs/brain over time.
Mercury sets the stage for infections/candida to take place and be difficult to control. They all in turn can cause/contribute to multiple chemical sensitivity by their affect on immunity. I've had all of that and it's horrible. I only managed to control it by a good diet excluding sugars/glutens/yeast.
Also, apparently mercury causes other toxic metals and chemicals to build up and makes it difficult for the body to eliminate them. It also can damage the blood brain barrier and allow for more build up of toxins in the brain. It weakens the body to become highly suseptible to so many things. It is extremely toxic and this is why one MUST have proper protection during amalgam removal or they may get MUCH worse from severe/acute toxic exposure from much increased mercury vapor.
You can be tested for alternative materials, but I do not know how accurate these tests are. As you said, no material is ideal because they are foreign. But leaving amalgams in place is continuing the cycle and allowing more and more mercury to build up over time.
After protected amalgam removal, as you know, chelation is extremely important. That too should be done in a manner that rather than cause further harm, will help to eliminate this metal as safely as possible and keep symptoms somewhat "tolerable" throughout by reducing the risks of redistribution.
