This Christian structure seems to have been built in the transition between the end of the Jewish settlement

Megiddo Church Reburied.

The Greek word for fish is ichtys.
It is said to have been adopted as a Christian symbol because it contains the initial letters ' of the appellation.

and Israel itself , the Meggido prison church has been covered up
with dirt and tarpaulins until more funding for the project can be secured.

The church of " prayer hall ", was discovered in late 2005 by an inmate of the prison , Ramil Razilo,
during salvage operations to make way for the expansion of the maximum security prison at Megiddo.
When the Israel Antiquities Authority announced that it had uncovered what could be the earliest Christian church in the Holy Land ,
containing the earliest known mention of Jesus Christ in Israel, there was a flurry of media reports around the globe.

The find was considered important enough to Israel President Moshe Katsav that when he visited
Pope Benedict XV1 at the Vatican in November 2005,
he took pictures of the newly discovered mosiac floor with him to present to the pontiff.

The pope expressed a keen desire to visit Israel and see the church.
In January 2006, President Katsav and 15 leaders of the Israeli Christian elite, including Greek Orthodox Bishop Irenious I,
Melkite Archbisop Emeritus Boutrous Mualem and several Coptic dignitaries ,
visited the site on the content and importance of the mosaic and archaeological finds by IAA excavation director Yotam Tepper.

In May, the Israel Postal Service issued a 15-shekel stamp featuring the fish mosaic church.

It also removes any doubt that a table once existed in the center of the hall- paid for by a woman named Akeptous:
" The God -loveing Akeptous has offered the table to " God Jesus Christ " as a memorial.

And this is the earlist inscription ever found in Israel , and perhaps anywhere , that mentions Jesus Christ !

Hopes were that not only the pope , but also thousands of visitors and pilgrims , would travel to Megiddo ,
and the IAA had plans to turn the area into a tourist attraction, moveing the prison elsewhere
in order in order to keep the church in it's orginal context.

Nearby Tel Megiddo is allready a UNESCO world heritage site and is considered to be the place mentioned in Revelation 16:16
where God will gather all the kings of the world together for the ultimate battle at the end time.

There was even thoughts of expanding a nearby airstrip to accomodate the anticipated influx of Christian pilgrims to the area.
But now, all plans for the " Armageddon Church " are on hold, and the site lies waiting until more money
becomes available for it's restoration and upkeep..

In the Roman empire of the first century lived several million Jews but only a couple of thousands Christians.

For the first time archeological evidence mentions a table and not an Altar to be used for the communion rite.
A communally meal, in which bread and wine were served to the members sitting around the table,
is considered the origin of the Mass ceremony.

The mosaic is from the 3rd or 4th century, many years before the official recognition of Christianity.
There is also a mentioning of Jesus as a God, the lack of a Cross, and the fish in the mosaic- all point to a very early era of Christianity.

Paul wrote a section of his first letter to the Corinthians to correct a misunderstanding they had about observing the memorial service of Jesus' crucifixion.
He told the Corinthians: " In the following directives I have no praise for you, for your meetings do more harm then good.
In the first place, I hear that when you come together as a church, there are divisions among you"
---- 1 Corinthians 11:17-18).

With a bit of sarcasm, Paul then wrote," When you come together it is not the Lord's supper you eat,
for as you eat, each of you goes ahead without waiting for anybody else"
(verses 20-21)

Paul was not commenting about the terminology used for the ceremony.
He was explaining that even though the Corinthian members where observing the service,
their internal divisions and animosity kept them from observing it in the proper spirit.
