Gertrude lives on the 30'th floor of a condo building. Whenever she comes home and enters the elevator, she will go straight to the 30'th floor only if someone else is in the elevator with her. Otherwise, she will got to the 26'th floor then walk up the stairs to the 30'th. Why?

I thought the other person on the elevator was the elevator opperator..
My husband said it was the building owner ...
Ha Ha!
Gertrude has to go with the person in the elevator for some reason and do something else when that person is not there..
Maybe she's an employee a maid or something & she cleans between the 26th and 30th floor's..
I have no idea what she does unless she lives on 26th floor and this person lives on the 30th..
There friends or she has a job on the 30th floor.
Confusing indeed..

OK, this is what my husband came up with this morning, before dashing off for work. (We live on the ground floor) :-)

WHY?= "GERTRUDE WAS SHORT AND COULD ONLY REACH THE BUTTON FOR THE 26 th FLOOR. SHE NEEDED A TALLER PERSON TO REACH THE BUTTON FOR THE 30th FLOOR. " ??????

So I will give it one guess.

"Gertrude has an elderly mother, (I'm laughing hysterically as I type this)...the mother lives on the 30th floor with Gertrude. So, Gertrude will get off with Mother IF she is with her in the elevator.
If mother is NOT with her, Gertrude (gets off on the 26th floor),and walks up the stairs for exercise."

I like that..
The elevator has no stool so Gertrude needs help and her Mother is taller..
Her Mother being elderly can't exercise but Gertrude can.
So she climbs the stairs for her health.
So her mother is the elevator operator..

Like a baton, plus baton twirling is great exercise she can do in lew of walking up thoses stairs.
Or a teachers blackboard pointer..
She needs to carry a big stick.
Or use stilts.
