He told me I need to be tested for allergies to mercury, nickle and lead. This is because I told him I'm allergic to nickle jewellry and badly so. My mouth is of course full of amalgam fillings.

So he tells me I need to get these tests from my GP. The only thing is he says " you must not, not, NOT under any circumstances say he told me to ask for the tests"!!!!!!!!!

Now I've asked the GP for the tests. She said it's the dentists responsibility. (Remember my dentist refuses to ask cos he'll get in trouble by his bosses; maybe lose his license or something.)

My dentist says it's my GP's responsibility to send me for the tests.

I offered to pay privately for the tests instead of on the NHS in Britain.... the local private hospital doens't know what kind of tests to do so has refused help.

Back to the GP's surgery and they've referred me for blood tests.

The consultant at the hostipal has sent a letter back saying "why does she need these blood tests? We'll give her a skin test."

Getting more frustrating by the minute......

I am having all kinds of symptoms all over the place and the only thing that links them all together is this amalgam issue. Seizures, lack of sleep, depression, fibromyalgia and so many other symptoms linked to amalgamate. :-(

Now I'm waiting for a skin allergy test which will probably show nothing and because I've been too sick for years to actually hold down a job it's incredibly important that I prove it's the amalgamate making me sick. Proving I'm sick is the only way I can get my fillings changed (and hopefully get my life and health back.) I'm too broke to pay for them to be done.

So the BIG PROBLEM IS......

What tests do I need? The doctors don't know.

How do they test for mercury, lead and nickle poisoning? They keep telling me there are no such tests.

Are there any medical journals that will prove amalgam poisoning exists and how to test for it? My doctor tells me there is no such thing.

My doctor told me today that he's only sending me for the tests to shut me up and prove there is nothing in the world wrong with tooth fillings. This is the same doctor that said "we don't talk about broken noses" when I got my nose smashed. smirk

There's no point me getting another GP.... I've been registered with every GP in this city now. Still no help.

Could anyone please point me to the right information for what blood tests need doing and how they test for poisoning?

Also anything I can prove to a doctor that this is real would help. My neurologist says there's nothing wrong with me so I don't know where my seizures are coming from. smirk

Anyway.... I don't know what else to say here. But anyone who helps could genuinely be saving my life here. I had seizures recently that made me fall in front of a moving car and I also fell on a knife at home. These are seizures my neurologist refuses to believe I'm having but my dentist said could be linked to my fillings.

Please please please please please please please please help.

In love and hope..... CD

I forgot to mention that the local dentists in my area refuse to take out my amalgamate fillings until I've had the allergy tests because with the amount I have it could be very dangerous if I'm allergic. I'm stuck with these fillings even if I offer to pay to have them out unless it's proved whether I'm allergic or not.

The last time I had much dental work done I became mysteriously sick for over six months and lost my job. During that work I apprently swallowed a little bit of filling. smirk

Hi, I'm in the UK too and have given up on the medical profession helping me. My doctor said she'd never heard of mercury poisoning from fillings and I got no where from calling up the BDHF, except that I needed bloodtests which a dentist should arrange for me. I went to see a mercury free dentist who was very horrible and didn't believe mercury was the cause of my problems.

There are dentists who will replace amalgam using precautions for you, though, without the tests! There's David Harvie Austin in London who uses diamondlite and there's David Cowan (http://www.kingsburyholisticdentist.co.uk/holistic.htm)
who is also in London. There are others who look at mercury toxicity, but these are the only two I found using diamondlite and all precautions.

Dr Austin can refer patients to a specialist who deals with mercury toxicity and will go through all your symptoms with you. I'm not sure where he is at the moment. He was at Q clinic in London, but recently has moved. They should be able to give you his new address. Their phone number is:(020)73171111. I highlt recommend him.

I haven't bothered with the mercury sensitivity/allergic tests because I've already decided to get the fillings replaced. But I do believe that to get treatment on the NHS you will need them to confirm you have too much mercury or sensitivity. I am having my done privately so I don't need the NHS to prove I am mercury toxic.

I went to London and I got referred for a biocompatibilty test to biolab (cost £50) to check that I am compatible with diamondlite. Happily the test showed I am so I can now go on and have the replacements.

In the meantime I am taking alginate, vitamin e, zinc, magnesium and vitamin c with bioflavinoids every day and I have noticed an improvement. I used to wake with pins and needles almost every night, but since taking these, I've only had that twice in the last three weeks. I'm also only drinking bottled water, cut out caffeine (except the odd cup of coffee and coke now and then) and tried to reduce sulpher foods.

I have a root canal tooth which needs extracting and I tried to get an OPG x-ray today, but I got another endless ring arounds. I can't have one done privately unless I am referred by a dentist and then I have to pay £85 and the xray go to them. It's ridiculous I can't get an x-ray to take home with me! I am pretty mad about this! I understand the radiation issue, but as people can smoke and drink themselves to death and radiate themselves with mobile phones, it seems ridiculous that it's illegal to have an x-ray done on request. At the very least they should have someone in the hospitals who you can go to for consent!

I wanted to sue the BDA for putting a toxin in my body as a child without informed consent of my mother, but I couldn't get a "no win no fee" lawyer to take me on. I asked our local psychology department at university if they would be interested in doing a case-study on me for the impact of amalgam on health - they never even acknowledged my letter.

I have written to Tony Blair about this, and I can say with all honesty that I will never again vote for a Labour government. They have been in power now for 8 years and they still pass off mercury as safe and don't help those who are poisoned by it.

Anyway, there are dentists in the UK who take mercury toxicity seriously, like the two above I mentioned, but you may have to travel and pay privately. They both, to my knowledge, use oxygen to minimise exposure and other safety precautions. Getting the fillings replaced by a regular dentist who doesn't use these things could make you much worse.

Let us know what you decide to do. Going privately I think is the answer. There are others in the UK who can help, depending on where you live and what replacement material you want. I wanted diamondlite, so I was kind of limited, but there's Moonfleet in Dorset who is very interested in mercury toxicity (www.moonfleet.co.uk) and very friendly people.

I too gave up on the medical profession. The doctors I talked to said it was nothing. One said well there's nothing he could do, and told me to get them replaced if I wanted. I never did any blood tests. I would have taken them, but I knew it'd be hell convincing people. So I just went to dentist and got my fillings replaced with white ones (no precautions -but then i'm in my mid twenties and i only had three).

It's interesting that your dentist said he wasn't really suppose to be telling you that.

Before going to an NHS dentist i went to a private dentist and they were advertising amalgam removal. It would have cost me around 180 pounds to get three taken out there though. However, the NHS dentist that treated me charged me 60 pounds a fillings, and i'm not suppose to pay anything (i'm a student)!

If I were you I'd just forget about the tests, find a dentist that'll treat you (with precautions if you've got a lot - I read about one in edinburgh if london's too far), get them replaced (possibly in stages if you've got a lot), then go on the detox programme (chlorella helps me, algin is suppose to be excellent - you could start now).

In the meantime stop drinking tap water and fish (i found they affected me a lot.)

Oh, and the part about not voting for labour. That's fine, but please change your vote for the greens and not the conservatives/whatever. Neither labour or the conservatives have done anything about amalgam fillings when they've been in power. Even our neighbours (sweden and germany) have banned them, and still our government(s) did nothing.

Let us know how you get on and good luck.

Hey CD,

I would recommend loaning this book to your doctor:

http://herballure.com/vp/aidt

Dr. Cutler, PhD, PE, who authored the book recommends loaning it to your doctor because it tells him what tests to order and how to read them to diagnose mercury toxicity.

Unfortunately, most tests done today (if the doctors even know they exist) are obsolete and ineffective; They do not detect mercury until it's too late and symptoms and damage has already occured.

Your symptoms match mercury in a very common way and I hope you find someone who will allow you to take control of your health and get the tests you need.

Please let us know what unfolds with your situation.

Heya,

Thanks for the info guys and thanks for the phone numbers Demi.

My update hasn't gone very far forward. I still haven't got an appointment on the skin allergy tests which my GP's were supposedly hurrying along for me. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/frown.gif" alt="" />

If I can scrape the cash together (at least £300 with no protection that I know of) then I can get the fillings taken out and replaced with something else. I don't know which kind of filling they will be replaced with.

Maybe doing them in stages is the best way to go. I do have a lot after all. I'm also sure they're helping my teeth corrode because the same damn fillings are always getting bigger despite looking after my teeth. It's getting more difficult because brushing my teeth has been making me feel sick for a couple of years now. smirk

I've ordered the two books this site sells on amalgamate and intend to show any good info to my doctor or consultant or whomever it 'should' concern. Just looking forward to them being delivered now.

Funny you should mention tap water. There's a lot of heavy metal in English tap water and I've noticed it can make me very sick. I'm usually MUCH better off on bottled water... sadly it's so expensive. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/frown.gif" alt="" /> Sorry to whine here but I'm sick as hell and only have minimal benefits to live on (about £40 a week) so getting money for the things I need to keep me healthy is a joke. I have had many seizures in front of doctors and health workers who have seen me with regarding getting Disability Living Allowance etc but I'm still apparently healthy enough to work. smirk Life is odd. Sorry the Government is a joke... yes that's closer. Just feels like the government lot did the dirty on me and now are burning my bridge back to health.

Thing is... about the blood tests that only show damage that has already been done....
it might be worth me taking these tests because there's a lot of damage here. If it's because of amalgam fillings then I could really do with it showing up on the tests. And yes it's the only way that I can think of right now to pay for my fillings to be changed. There is no other way I can think of to pay at all and the hospital people in the blood clinic tell me they can't do the tests unless I give them the name of the blood test I need. It's a bit awkward because I don't know yet.

If I can get these blood tests done and prove that I have damage from amalgam fillings I'd be pleased to share it.

I have to confess I'm scared to death of taking out these fillings and it going wrong.

Also... I know this might be a lot to ask but is there a well informed person on this site that would mind taking me through this procedure step by step (such as pointing me in the right direction on what blood tests I need and how to figure out what the findings mean unbiasdly)?

I figure that I don't mind taking the long road round on this if I can get some 'solid' proof for the rest of us here on the site. I've lived with chronic pain and the rest of the symptoms for so long now a bit more won't make a difference if it helps more people than just me. I can't help thinking of how many children like me sat there scared when they got their first filing and they were told there was lead in it. (It freaked me out when I was a kid and I got told they were putting lead (even then I knew it was a poison) into my mouth.) <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/frown.gif" alt="" />

So... that's me asking for help and offering an extension to my daily pain if it helps in the long run. It may come to nothing but the offer's there. I'll check back soon.

Good luck to everyone here and wish me luck also. xx

Good luck with going through the NHS.

Have you asked your doctor/dentist about a sensitivity test to mercury or the metals in amalgam? The NHS acknowledges that some people are sensitive to mercury so if you can test positive for sensitivity then they will pay for the treatment for you. I don't know what the test is though.

I too am living on a budget so know what it's like. Morrisons sells bottled water fairly cheap - £1.30 or so for 4 2 litres bottles - at least in my area. I also save water by boiling all my veggies together in one saucepan (which saves gas and washing up too, lol) as it doesn't bother me to have them in one heap on my plate instead of tidy portions <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif" alt="" />

Heya Demi, that test 'might' be what I'm getting (should I ever actually get to see the doc at the hospital). I'm really not sure though.

My GP's surgery has requested for me to be taken off their patients list this week for missing two appointments (which I cancelled as I was too ill to attend and ended up seeing a doctor out of hours.... yes it was also for an amalgam related illness I needed to see a doctor for). So right now I'm appealing to stay on the list as I'm in the middle of treatment. :-/ This just means things may be delayed for a while. Hopefully not too long.

I'll print out your post and look in the two books I bought from this website to see if I can work it out. Or if it's not in there hopefully someone will post the name of the tests here. I'll find out one way or the other. It's a bit hit and miss what days I can take this in though as I've had these books a week and have only managed to read and understand any of it today. And that's only because I'm drinking an awful lot of Red Bull taurine/caffine drink.

So... erm... I'll get back to you with anything I find out. Maybe talk to the lab guys at the local hospital again as they were pretty helpful. Cross your fingers for me that one of them has the time for a chat. :-)

You might want to get in touch with Pam who suffered for years until she got her amalgams out. She now runs the helpline in the UK.

http://www.pamshelpline.com/

I don't know how they test for sensitivity. Biolab in London do it through a blood test, but NHS might do it through a sensitivity patch.

From what I have read, if you test positive for the sensitivity, they will remove the fillings for you. However, I don't know if they follow all safety procedures. This is something you will really have to enquire about or try and get NHS sponsoring to allow you to go to a dentist who does. I don't know if that is possible, but if you test sensitive, you don't want them to just drill out the mercury without giving you oxygen etc. You also might want to insist on a biocompatibility test to make sure you are compatible with the alternative NHS fillings, which are probably not as good as diamondlite and some others available privately.

Please update with how you get on!

Demi, when I had my biocompatibility test, it came back that I was sensitive to mercury ( among other things). So, maybe the biocompatibilty test is all that would be needed?

I don't know. I think it would depend whether they recognise the test as valid. I don't think they recognise all tests. But it's worth finding out if they would recognise a private test as they can be done quickly.

CD it might be an idea for you to email the British Dental Health Foundation and ask them their procedure for someone suffering from mercury poisoning from the fillings. Not only may you get some answers, but it will bring the issue to their attention, which is needs to be done. Their web address is:

http://www.dentalhealth.org.uk/

I think a lot of us here would also be interested in their answer <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif" alt="" />

im trying to start a new thread but cant seem to find how so il post here.It seems people are worrying about the cost of going to mercury free dentists or ill affects of exposure during mercury removal, well i found the perfect alternative-just have the teeth pulled whole with no damage to the fillng! Not really an option for front teeth but fine for molars.Heres my story.........Ihad a botched root fill where the training dental nurse was too slow mixing the amalgam resulting in the dentist starting again coz the amalgam was not taking to the tooth very well. The dentist had to mix the amalgam herself and start again -over exposure even by BDA standards. That was three months before my first "multiple sclerosis" attack.I made no connection because i never knew that mercury was in this "silver" filling. I am educated enough to know mercury has no place anywhere near the human body. i became very ill over the year and thought i was doomed to a life of steroids.Pins and needles and tingling on my tongue made me notice a cracked filling and while waiting to visit the dentist i looked up root-fillings on the net because i like biology and wanted to see whats inside a tooth.I was amazed at the google results eg root canal cover-up and amalgam is everywhere.Even with all i read i could not be sure it was the cause of my problems and any website with a link to books or detox has to have a biased opinion which is no good to me.I dont see why the education books about mercury are not sold at cost-oh yes i do-greed!! It doesnt help the anti-amalgam campaign that money is being made from people in this way.
I told my NHS dentist and asked her to swap mercury for white fillings. She said there would not be enough tooth left to fill after taking the amalgams out. i ASKED HER TO PULL THE TEETH but she would not because they would fall apart so she refered me to a private surgical extraction clinic who do extractions on nhs.One week later i had FOUR molars extracted in one sitting with the dentist taking the fillings out whole and slitting the gums to get the rest of the teeth out (lots of stiches) so i had NO EXPOSURE TO MERCURY VAPOR. Having four molars out is a walk in park and can say a stubbed toe would have been more grief.Hmmm thats funny-the multiple sclerosis seems to have gone, and ibs which i had for years has gone too.Without changing my diet i piled wieght back on-all muscle coz thats my natural athletic muscular body type that was robbed from me by the "ibs" Even the bda admit that there is vapor exposure till amalgams set so i would not recemend the exposure that must be suffered when amalgams are removed.Lose the teeth if you can, i had four molars out and i allready lost two years ago so im down six molars now and it makes no difference to me.I might cut certain foods up more but thats no hardship,im never the last to finish dinner and im not in a wheelchair whuch i was for a while.Life is good and i have no sugar in my diet so the teeth i have will stay with me for good.If you have large fillings, ask your nhs dentist to refere you for extraction and go private.I was on income and disability so it was free for me but extractions are cheapish anyway. I saw the DIRECTOR GENERAL OF BRITISH DENTAL ASSC. live on tv wiggling like a politician because the lady sat next to him had a lifetime of clinical depression reversed after mercury removal. He said "some people" might" be sensitve to mercury but you can have a test done to check and we dont put mercury in children anymore"???????????????????? Oh well if that doesnt stink of liability i dont know what does. good luck to all with amalgam poisoning and dont go broke paying a premium for hollistic coz you will be getting the same result as me-full health, i got away with countless hours of"specialst procedure mercury removal" and some of you could do as well"

Hi again,

Thanks for the links and info Demi. I'm working on it, hard as it is to get any help.

I've not much to report so far except to say that I've seen another dentist and he reckons I definitely have mercury poisoning. Oh and my neurologist says there's nothing wrong with me neurologically speaking so my seizures are probably down to the mercury. (Apart from the pain and tiredness the seizures are the worst part at the mo.)

However even he doesn't want to write down on paper that he thinks I have mercury poisoning and he says that anyone doing so risks looking a fool in their profession as they'd be a hypocrite because they have no solid proof on poisoning. He tells me to see toxicology at the hospital but won't tell me which tests to get. (I'm confused.) <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/frown.gif" alt="" />

I'm looking for a new GP surgery this week so we'll see how we go from there.

Oh.. I guess I could mention I've had my teeth x-rayed this week by my new dentist to see how much work needs doing.

You're right on the mark for white fillings though... I don't know anythng about the different types of whites. Don't want to go from the frying pan into the fire.

I'll check in again soon and let you know what's happening. I'm not taking much info in too well any more (probably cos of the seizures) plus I'm injuring myself now and hurting my neck and breaking teeth (from seizures aso).
