Hi all,
I haven't really made any progress with my illness for a year and have decided to start chelating again. After amalgam removal I chelated for 8 months but plateaued and was never really sure if mercury was the root cause of my problems.
I started a round of ALA today. I had worked up to 100mg last time I did this, along with 50mg DMSA. So I thought I'd be OK to start at 25mg, every 3 hours. I've had 3 doses and my symptoms are building up. I've had a headache all day, there's been tightness in my chest, and more recently I've started to feel nauseous. My gut has been complaining for several hours.
I think it's almost undeniable that the ALA is moving mercury around. Maybe the DMSA I always took with it before, got rid of these symptoms to the extent that I didn't realise what was going on inside of me. The thing is, I really want to avoid DMSA. It upsets my adrenals now even at very small doses, it's expensive, and it look like there are supply problems now too.
Sooo . . . if the symptoms get too bad during this round, I guess I'll have to stop and take a lower dose next round. I'd rather not though. Hm, don't know how likely it is I'll get through this one, though, if my symptoms are this bad already. Does anyone have suggestions for what to do about the nausea?
Thanks! Linda.

Well from the papers I read, only ~33% of the mercury ALA picks up is excreted. With DMSA about 65% of the mercury it binds to is excreted. DMPS is like 85%. SO thats why DMSA would lessen your symtpoms because it helps excrete the mercury that ALA picks up but doesn't remove.
You will get some redistribution if you stop, but if you can't handle it there is no other choice. For the nausea some peppermint or ginger tea would be good...but I would probably just stop if I was you and wait a day or two and start again with maybe 1/3 the dose of ALA.

Some websites mention that ALA may lower blood sugar, and advise that ALA be taken with food if it causes nausea.

Hi, and thanks to you both. I'm surprised at what's happening -- I didn't actually expect anything to happen, which is perhaps why I wasn't as cautious about the dose as I should have been. The headache isn't intense, just persistent, and isn't responding very well to paracetamol. The nausea is the worst problem at the moment. I don't want redistribution after less than a day of chelation so I'll see how long I can hold out.
Gdawson, do you remember where you read those figures about chelators? I'm on Andy's frequent-dose chelation list and they are happy to tell people to try chelating with ALA alone. If it redistributed so much mercury, I wouldn't have thought they would do that, it's like two steps forward and one step back. For me, there's unfortunately no way I can go back to the DMSA. I tried several months ago and my adrenals were severely stressing at miniscule doses.
Fingers crossed, LOL. Maybe I'm on the way to getting better now.

If you take ALA at the half life (3 hours) or less it doesnt redistribute much at all, because the mercury that wasn't excreted binds with the new dose of ALA. This is why Andy say it will take 30-40% longer to recover if you use only ALA, because you do excrete less every round compared to ALA + DMSA. The figures were from this study http://findarticles.com/p/articles/mi_m0FDN/is_6_7/ai_96416600Its in there somewhere...at least I'm pretty sure it is.

here, I found the quote for you from that article ALA versus Dithiol-based Chelating Agents (DMPS, DMSA)
The ability of ALA to bind inorganic mercury from rabbit renal tissue was compared to glutathione and the chelators 2,3-dimercaptopropane-1-sulfonate (DMPS), meso-2,3-dimercapto-succinicacid (DMSA), penicillamine, and ethylenediaminetetra acetic acid (EDTA) (Figure 3). (69)
[FIGURE 3 OMITTED]
DMPS was the most efficient chelator, removing 86 percent of the mercury in three hours, with DMSA being the next-most efficient, removing 65 percent of the mercury. In the same time period, penicillamine removed 60 percent, glutathione removed 50 percent, ALA removed 35 percent, and EDTA removed 20 percent. Only the levels reached by DMSA and DMPS, however, were statistically significantly different from baseline (p<0.05). Therefore, the effect of ALA and glutathione may show only a trend or an apparent effect and are not comparable to DMPS and DMSA. Although the actual effect of a chelator or heavy metal-complexing agent cannot be determined in a three-hour time period, and acute doses of 10 mg/kg of inorganic mercury would be considered highly toxic in an adult human, there is evidence from this study that ALA is a less efficient binder of inorganic mercury than the recognized chelating agents, DMSA and DMPS. All of the substances were used at a concentration of 10 mM, a level difficult to reach with ALA oral supplementation.

Brilliant, that's all I need to see. Thanks very much. I'm going to have to stop this round because I'm feeling pretty sick. Will recover over the next couple of days, then try a new strategy. I will take equal doses of DMSA and ALA and start out small. I decided to mark the side of a water bottle in 8 separate 50ml increments and I can use that to measure my doses in sips, which saves me having to play with little piles of power from caps. It may be a test for my adrenals but I can see a) that I appear to be toxic still; b) ALA alone is going to give me problems, and c) from the info above, it's going to take longer without DMSA. I brought a massive amount of DMSA back with me from my last trip to the USA a little over a year ago, so I have enough to be getting on with for now. Again, fingers crossed. My adrenals weren't this reactive since I got on a corticosteroid, it's only since taking that that I can't seem to cope with DMSA well. Thanks again, wish me luck

Maybe try something like 12.5 mg of each, if you dose low with DMSA it might not stress your adrenals as much.
Good luck LindaLou!

One article I read mentioned that DMSA should not be taken with food, as doing so decreases the absorption of DMSA. Some substances are not very stable after being diluted with water. Are you sure DMSA is stable after dilution? Perhaps if it isn't mixed with much water, and it is refrigerated after dilution, it might be stable enough to keep for up to 12 hours?
"I decided to mark the side of a water bottle in 8 separate 50ml increments and I can use that to measure my doses in sips, which saves me having to play with little piles of power from caps."
That would not be a good idea. Perhaps dissolving one capsule in a one ounce medicine bottle full of water, then refrigerating that might be reasonable for keeping it for up to 24 hours. Diluting it in 400 ml of water and keeping it at room temperature might very well cause a major degradition. Do not try this unless you are sure that it would be stable if treated like this.

When I was chelating with ALA and became constipated, I felt very horrible. One needs to make sure they use the bathroom enough while taking ALA, as ALA cause mercury to be excreted primarily through the bowel.

Thanks JK, I did find the web pages of some people who dilute DMSA with water. Also I found this: http://home.earthlink.net/~moriam/HOW_TO_buy_DMSA.html#mix_small_doseI think if I only mix up half a day's doses at a time, I should be OK. The ALA is leaving my system, headache and digestion are settling down. Boy that was a rude awakening.

Perhaps, but don't use too much liquid, and keep it refrigerated. Also shake it well before each dose to make sure it is evenly distributed. Since they are concerned about oxidation, it might be a good idea to keep it in a small bottle that is capped.

Hi Linda,
I think that it's a good trial to use ALA alone without DMSA. Don't get me wrong, DMSA not only speeds chelation up, but makes it more stable when used alongside ALA. However, it is not essential according to Cutler. But it is also used to help with the symptoms caused by ALA. ALA apparently does not suppress symptoms, but DMSA "can" - or at least to some extent.
So I think this is indicative that you most likely have toxic metals at work and contributing or possibly even causing your problems. If the dose is still too high, you may need to cut it down further. It's up to you if you wish to use DMSA with ALA again, but sometimes we like to feel something happening as it's an indicator to us we're maybe on the right track.
Certainly you do not HAVE to take DMSA with it. Culter says many people have chelated their mercury successfully with ALA alone, though it may not be as easy due to symptoms. But it's certainly cheaper. I cannot afford DMSA anymore. I might be able to get ALA every now and again, but even then I'll be reacing through it because I'll be taking a tablet/pill every 3 hours. So it won't last me long at all. So I may only be trying chelation every other weekend or so. It's just life!
Ginger is pretty good for nausea. You may want to try some ginger herbal tea. I have one with ginger and lemon. Peppermint tea is nice also and pretty good for digestion. Nausea can be part of healing crisis symptoms, so you may well have to reduce the dose. It's up to you. If it's a bit more than you can bear, then you're probably taking too much.
If DMSA upsets your adrenals, then again, skip it. If you read Andy Cutler's amalgam illness book, again DMSA is NOT essential and those that do not respond well to it, cannot afford it, or just don't want to take it, do not have to!
Please keep us posted on how you go with this. I'm quite uplifted to hear that there are symptoms, as bad as that sounds, it indicates it's doing something and without metals, I cannot imagine it would create such symptoms.
Cheers
Just a note to those less familiar with the use of ALA in mercury: ALA (alpha lipic acid) should not be used too early on following mercury exposure/amalgam removal when the body/blood levels will still be high, or you will risk making things much worse. ALA can cross the blood brain barrier and may take more blood/body mercury across with it INTO the brain if blood/body levels are still too high. Either a person should use DMSA to reduce the initial high blood/body levels or if they don't want to, they can wait until levels naturally reduce over the first few months. After about 3 months post mercury exposure/amalgam removal, ALA is apparently then safe to use, but only according to Cutler's protocol. Using it in large and/or sporadic doses maybe asking for trouble. It is not simply a great antioxidant, it is a powerful chelating agent for mercury, so needs to be used correctly for safety (about 3 months or more post mercury exposure/amalgam removal and dosed every 3 hours around the clock. Approximately 3 days on, 3-4 days off and repeated until the person has chelated their mercury). This needs to be done for many months/even years.
DMSA chelates extra-cellular mercury ALA chelates intra-cellular mercury

This article is irrelevant..... Andy has alread commented on it. You can use ALA only..... What you posted is the irrelevant part. Many other parts of it are relevant to understanding how these chelators work. The part about the percentages removed are relevant to the efficiency of the chelators and how strongly they bind to mercury. ALA can be used alone, yes, but it does not excrete mercury from the body as efficiently as DMSA so it is good to take the two together if possible, as it could reduce the number of rounds until you recover.

Gosh, I'm not sure what to do now! Thanks, everyone, for the advice. I'd like to try DMSA and ALA together but I'm not sure whether to try 12.5mg of each, or even half of that. On the FDC list they tell you to take very small amounts for considerable periods of time. I have a track record with these substances so I hope I can get on with things a but more quickly than that.
At any rate, I need to rest for a while -- still feeling a bit sick and rough.

Gdawson, you have to read Andy's comments on this study.
It works like this:
They took mercury poisoned animal kidney tissue and treated them with ALA, DMSA, DMPS etc.. It was found that ALA did not remove a significant amount of mercury from it.
The problem is that when a living organism takes ALA it is converted to DHLA and this is the actual chelating agent.
The kidneys were dead so they could not do the conversion....

Well I guess that does make it irrelevent, as I'm familiar with the whole ALA -> DHLA conversion.
I was never trying to say you shouldn't use ALA only either, just that ALA + DMSA resulted in a faster excretion of mercury which Andy does agree with.
In any case, good luck LindaLou and start out with whatever dose you feel would be the most tolerable. Lower than 12.5 each may be a better idea. From what I remember Andy seems to reccomend diluting DMSA/ALA in something acidic...so even if you add some ascorbic acid to the water that would help.
Oh, one more thing LindaLou, Did you even get an x-ray after amalgam removal? I just got one, after 3 years of getting mine removed, and there was a still a very small piece of amalgam under one of my composites. I'm getting it safely removed today, but I think it explains my slow progress in certain areas. Just curious.

Well I guess that does make it irrelevent, as I'm familiar with the whole ALA -> DHLA conversion. I thought it was because you suggested mercury would bind less tightly to ALA than DMSA... and that's what the study showed... I think the fact that your dentist left a small piece of mercury in your mouth shows how irresponsible and incompentent dentist really are. I hear this very often that people have small pieces of amalgam under the composites... Some people may never recover because of this. It's a shame. I am quite interested to hear how your body will respond to the removal... for some people the brain fog lifts and depression goes away within hours. This reaction is not typical however.. Good Luck...

Ya wish me luck...I'm off to the dentist right now. I asked Andy personally how long I should lay off of the ALA and he said only 1 week after removal, as my case is different than someone who had a mouthful of exposed amalgams.

yes, let us know how it goes...
Do you know Tom Warren btw?
The guy who had Alzheimers and recovered after amalgam removal. I heard that in his book he wrote he had, his fillings out, chelated with DMSA, took vitamins etc. etc. but his brain fog and confusion did not go away. Then he discovered an amalgam tatoo in his mouth and had it removed surgically. His brain fog lifted immediately after the surgery.. and he recovered his brain function.

Linda, have you done a parasite cleanse lately? Parasite cleanses have helped me. Which herbs are you taking to help in detoxification? Which mineral and vitamin supplements are you taking? If your body is not detoxifying properly, then chelation, which yanks out deeply stored mercury and brings it into your bloodstream, could make you feel so much worse. Are you taking molybdenum and selenium?

Taking zinc is also important. I am scared to take zinc while chelating though, and take 50 mg a day of zinc just on my off days. Zinc also sometimes makes me feel nausious. I have reduced my coffee intake to just one cup a day. It would be better for me not to drink any coffee, however I find it hard enough waking up with just one cup. Licorice root tea has been great in helping me detoxify. While I still avoid fruit, sugar, and alcohol, a few weeks ago I started eating bread and pasta again. I felt hungry all the time without the wheat. I might give up bread again in a few weeks, however it will be hard for me to completely give up wheat again. When I was off wheat, my weight was getting too low(down to 150 pounds, and I was afraid I might lose more weight). i have also recently had temperatures that were too low, and this may have at least partially been due to the low carb diet.

Gosh, it's been busy here! I've got a good supplement regime. I've taken selenium and zinc in the past but they didn't seem to do anything for me after taking them for months, so I stopped. I had to cut a few things out because it was all getting too expensive. I still have a good core supplement programme with lots of vitamin C, magnesium, vitamin D, vitamin E, high doses of B vitamins, CoQ10 and fish oil. I do always have powdered vitamin C handy, I stir it into my daughter's lunchtime drink for school, so I'll add a little of that to my "chelation water." I did a Humaworm parasite cleanse but felt no effects from it. I then tried to move on to a kidney cleanse but the herbal tea taxed my adrenals and I couldn't take it. My body's pretty weak, especially with this corticosteroid (I wish I'd never taken it), so I don't think aggressive cleanses are a very good idea at the moment. I tried some digestive enzymes last week but something stirred up the mercury, it was either those or some kelp I took, so I've put those things aside. I remember that I used to be OK on two parts ALA to one part DMSA, so that's the way I'll go. Tomorrow I'll start again with 12.5mg ALA and 6.25mg DMSA. Some of the mercury could do with mopping up by the DMSA, it's still lingering a bit. BTW I've noticed some gentle but positive effects today from those doses of ALA. I feel a little more alive. I've been so very dead inside. This is a good sign. I haven't had my mouth X-rayed but that's an idea for the future. The dentist who removed my amalgams said she got them all but . . . well, NHS dentists aren't exactly the most thorough people. Gdawson good luck to you -- sounds like you have a sensible plan and lots of support here

Are you taking in enough salt? I realized that I was sodium deficient, and increased my salt intake. While the typical American eats too much salt, I eat mostly foods that are very low in sodium. Too much sodium can be toxic, but those who are toxic with heavy metals seem to need a larger than average amount. The suggested daily intake of salt is 4 grams. When I forgot to add salt to my food, I was probably getting less than 2 grams a day of salt. I feel better when I increase my salt intake.
Molybdenum can be quite inexpensive if you get the Thorne capsules that has one mg of molybdenum in each. In the US, it is only around $6 for a bottle of 60 capsules. Some other brands are only 150 mcg each, and taking 7 of those a day is not only annoying, but also expensive.
Zinc is very important for boosting the immune system and fighting candida. Most mercury toxic people are quite zinc deficient. Zinc gluconate is quite cheap. While it is less absorbable than zinc picolinate, it still well enough absorbed if taken with meals. I take it on the off days though, since chelation interferes with the excretion of excess zinc.
Are you taking an iron supplement? If you don't eat much meat, then you may be iron deficient.
Selenium is very important not just for detoxifying from mercury and boosting the immune system, but also for the conversion of the thyroid hormone T4 into the much more active T3. Selenium binds with mercury, so those who are mercury toxic need more than the general population. It is a good idea to take 200 mcg a day.
Copper is a tricky one. Some mercury toxic people have too much copper, while some are copper deficient. Copper is necessary for hemoglobin formation.
Are you taking an iodine supplement? I am taking around 15 mg a day of iodine. My AM temperature is still below normal, but seems to be gradually increasing.

Well it went quick and almost painless. My dentist printed me out a before an after x-ray to reassure me. The dentist that did it 3 years ago said he did a thorough job, but I did have 10 big amalgams in my mouth. I also noticed the dentist from 3 years ago showing signs of mercury exposure towards the end of each quadrant removal....I was fully protected with oxygen and a rubber damn but poor guy didn't have anything...which made me kinda sad but it was his choice.
BTW, The tooth around the mercury filling on the inside can be gray colored from the mercury...so it might not always be easy for the dentist to clearly see where the mercury stops. X-ray's afterward seem like the only foolproof method.
Hopefully this will help me a lot. I have made improvement in 3 years, and I have a beautiful life on a ranch now with very rewarding work, but honestly I'm still a mess in many ways from the mercury...but I'm confident the ALA/DMSA is doing its job and I just have to keep up with it...and I'm glad I got an x-ray, I just had a hunch something wasn't right.
And I have never heard of Tom Warren, but I do believe his story is possible. Thankfully I don't have any amalgam tattoos, so I should have got rid of all the sources.

Hi Gdawson,
Similar happened to me. But get this - I had a panoramic xray which didn't really show remaining amalgam. Even a biologic dentist did not spot anything amiss in that area.
However, when I had my plastic composites redone in cerec porcelain, I had to go to a mainstream dentist because this requires somebody very experienced. The guy I went to was actually a cerec instructor and I wasn't taking any chances with an expensive material like this by going to somebody perhaps less experienced. He was also a little less expensive. Plus, I was not having amalgam removal, so it wasn't quite as "necessary".
As he was removing my composites - he discovered a bit of remaining amalgam in either one or two teeth (I cannot recall). I was pretty angry because the previous dentists I'd gone to knew that I was getting amalgam removed for health, not for "looks". However, I must also remember that two of the dentists I had gone to for amalgam removal were not biologic. So that is a lesson. This cerec dentist told me that it is common for a dentist to leave amalgam behind because they do not like to drill too deep and often avoid doing so by leaving a little leftover.
I only found out by having composites removed. This cerec dentist drilled out that bit of amalgam for me. No protection of course, but what did I expect? However, thankfully it was only a small amount. Now did the bit of remaining amalgam/s have anything to do with the utter agony I went through with chelation? Or is that just expected with mercury detox anyway? I will never know. I never recovered from it anyway - I was still detoxing the stuff when I went down hill with the virus that has plagued me ever since. Plus I think cavitations from later extraction.
Mercury poisoning leaves a person in a far more vulnerable position. Just because a person may reach a point of "feeling" better, it is highly on the cards they are still very poisoned. As I believe in my case. Even Andy says that as a person chelates, they may reach a point of "feeling" well again. This is the point where people can make the mistake of quitting chelation too early. There comes a point where the chelation maybe KEEPING a person well, but there is still plenty of remaining mercury. It is wise to keep chelating for sometime after you feel well. E.g. 6 months or more to make sure that the improvements become permanent, not temporary. A number of people have mistaken feeling better for BEING well and have quit chelating, only to find themselves regressing again as the remaining stored mercury is still there and still slowly leaking out and causing problems.
I too have some greyish discolouration from my amalgam days. I can only hope the cerec dentist did his best.
Though even with the bit of remaining amalgam, there is no doubt that my body did go through the mercury dumping stage regardless. So enough amalgam must have been gone for my body to start trying to dump the storage. Or this would not have taken place. I also lost a some weight after last amalgam removal too (which was needed). I had a more streamlined appearance, rather than my typical slightly bloated/solid look, which I could never shift with amalgams. It shifted all by itself after the removals.
However, the little bit of amalgam remaining may well have hindered me somewhat both in healing and in my efforts to chelate - either way I cannot be sure. But I am soon to begin ALA chelation. But awaiting a better time, because my gut is in no condition to support chelation. I am struggling still after the probiotic usage. Further problems that ALA has created in my gut in the past would be making a difficult situation even worse.

So they found some Amalgam under the other fillings too? My holistic dentist took the x rays and said there was none left before he took MY HUGE tooth out with amalgam and he showed me the black tooth and that was it. Could there be more underneath? I would hope not, what if I chelate one day and there is some left? I am toast. I would love to chelate one day soon, but what if there is some left? I have thought of that because I still get metallic taste from time to time, but that can be from Candida or something else correct? I get it but not nearly as bad as I had it when my tooth was in, I was in BAD shape around that time. I hope never to go back to that way, I am not good now but I am alot better than then.

Sean, if your dentist took good x-rays afterwards, there shouldn't be any problem.
I would get a metallic taste in my mouth occasionally, but only from certain supplements...I think thats normal with mercury poisoning and not something you should worry about.
I did do 18 rounds of ALA w/ (8 were w/ DMSA) that tiny speck in, and I don't think it hurt me, but it could have still been holding me back.

JK98,
I have a teaspoon of Himalayan sea salt dissolved in water every morning, to support my adrenals. My sodium levels in my last blood test were optimal -- a rare thing but nice not to have to worry about.
I took high doses of zinc and selenium for quite some time with no noticeable effects. I also took a colloidal mineral supplement, ditto. I can't afford a cornucopia of supplements so I chose what seems to help or what I know is absolutely essential. If I had to give it all up, the last thing I'd give up would be vitamin C.
I take an iron supplement called Spatone, which is highly bioavailable water from a Welsh spa that has high levels of iron dissolved in it. I've been to the source. They let you have a little taste directly from the pool but they have bars in front so you can't take a bucket away with you LOL.
I tried supplementing copper and it made me sick.
I've started taking a little Lugol's iodine today, sipping from a water bottle with half a drop dissolved in it. I have not had anything like the reaction I had to the kelp -- or the digestive enzymes, not sure which one it was.
I'm pretty happy with my supplement regime, though I could do with something to ease the stomach aches that the ALA is causing. The headaches haven't come back, thank goodness.
I did indeed start another chelation round today. I've been taking 12.5mg ALA and 6.25mg DMSA. Seems to be working well. No horrible discomfort, I went to work today OK. I instantly feel better on chelation, despite any physical symptoms, it seems. I found myself staring at a patch of grass in someone's garden today and being amazed . . . hmmm, green grass . . . hmmm, earthy earth . . . This is good. I also don't feel like I'm ready to drop dead, and my body isn't aching, after a day at work. This really is very helpful.
Of course it's nice, and very encouraging, but I'm full of questions now. Why do I feel better so quickly when I chelate? Why did I seem not to make progress for months when I was using 100mg ALA and 50mg DMSA without stop? Why did I feel so much worse for so long when I stopped, if I'd pulled mercury out? I guess my biggest fear is that somehow I would have to keep taking this stuff the rest of my life because I'd only just go back to feeling awful without it, and I'd never truly get well. I guess it's not very helpful to be thinking that way right now.

Perhaps your body reached an equilibrium state, and the mercury remaining was very tightly bound. With time the body naturally detoxes, so some of the tightly bound mercury moved to a part of your body where it is not so tightly bound, so now it can be removed.
The Lugol's solution is a good idea. I suggest that you add zinc and selenium to your regimen though, as many mercury toxic people are deficient in these, and selenium doesn't just help get rid of mercury, but is also so crucial to convert T4 to T3. Zinc is important for the immune system. Vitamin c and b vitamins are good, but don't go crazy with them. I take 2 grams a day of vitamin c. Some here take over 10 grams a day. Magnesium is also very important.

Thanks JK, I'll reconsider selenium and zinc. I probably still have half-empty bottles of both. BTW I kept getting illness after illness until I bumped my vitamin C up to 9 grams a day. It is wonderful stuff, you should read some Linus Pauling. Where in the body can mercury get tightly bound? What can someone do when that happens? Jammes, I had my amalgams out without protection in June 2007. I felt worse straight away. Tried "natural"chelators at first but they didn't help. I then got on DMSA and that did help quite a lot, and fairly quickly too. After a couple of months I added ALA, then simply increased the dose of each, alternately, little by little. I was doing 3 days on 3 days off, every 3 hours apart from a little longer at night, as Cutler recommends. My symptoms always get worse in the winter and my progress slowed quite a lot; also, I felt so bad off chelation that I decided to do it continually. I stopped last February. How many rounds? I lost count, your guess is as good as mine from that

The body has very strange reactions when exposed to large amounts of mercury...such as having your amalgams improperly replaced. If you got them improperly removed, I wouldn't be surprised if the dentist left some mercury in there somewhere, as he probably didn't even believe it was dangerous if he was taking them out without precautions.
Zinc personally doesn't work for me. It did for a little but I think I apparently got enough because now it just makes me tired and fatigued when I take it, and I feel pretty energetic if I don't.
I personally would not worry about how you reacted to stuff before and just pay attention how you do right now. You obviously are reacting to your recent attempts at chelation with ALA so just keep it up and I think you'll help excrete mercury that was stored in your body. I know its confusing since you used large doses before, but mercury really has some strange properties and effects on the body.

Mercury in the brain and nervous system is rather tightly bound. So probably is mercury in the liver and kidneys. Mercury binds quite tightly to the 4 iodine binding sites on the thyroid. Zinc is very important for immunity. So is vitamin A. if you keep getting respiratory infections, then you should be taking zinc (perhaps 30 mg a day?) and vitamin A(not beta carotene,10,000 units a day)

I then got on DMSA and that did help quite a lot, and fairly quickly too. Maybe you should try DMSA only if it helped you a lot... My symptoms get worse in the winter This suggests Vitamin D deficiency. Have you tried supplementing it?

Vitamin D is also important. I take 2,000 units a day. perhaps I should increase that to 3,000-5,000 units a day? http://www.vitamindcouncil.org/

I take 2000iu of D3 a day. I also read somewhere that vitamins A and D need to be in balance and if you take too much of either one, the balance is thrown off. I'll have to see if I can find the article. It would help if I could remember where I read it! If vitamin A comes from carotene then at least the body can make its own and it won't make more than it needs.
I've been talking on the FDC list and I've been told that I might have been in a "stall period." Apparently the worst of it is usually 6-9 months post-amalgam, when the organs are dumping mercury and your blood levels are high, causing you to feel poorly. I perhaps stopped too soon before this was over. Sounds like a possibility. There's a graph on p.52 of AI but I've never read the book cover to cover so I missed it.

Hi Linda, I started dumping mercury about a year and a half post amalgam removal. So I was a late starter! Before that, I was in a strange state where it appeared nothing was really happening. I was worse immediately after removal, took some DMSA to clear some of that out (unfortunately not cutler style), then stopped thinking all was "ok". But it was not. The stored mercury was just waiting to break forth and it started to do so much later. So there is not telling what the mercury will do and when and how it will be for each person. Responses to chelation may differ because of this and at different times. If the chelation helps you to feel a bit better, this is indiciative it is working. It should reach a point where you do not have to chelate to feel that way. But for now, it's probably removing mercury from you and helping to keep you in a state of better balance. When you stop, it regresses again. But if enough mercury is removed, this should stop in time. Keep chelating, because it can take many months or even a few years to get enough of the mercury out in order to heal.

I had a bit of amalgam, but it didn't hold back the dumping stage from occuring. So evidentally my body recognised there was no mercury or at least very very little, so it started to dump the storage. I am doubtful this would have occured otherwise.

Cool you made me think more positive tonight Bex!!!!!!!!! My holistic dentist took pics and said he was checking for more and did not say a thing later on about it, just showed me the black on the pic and said you will get better every year with muscle testing which he found out an earring was bothering me from the way it was put in and where it was, go figure he found that out too? Holes in your body, he said do you have a hole anywhere? I said no? I did not have my earrings in there and when he found out what it was he said take them out they did damage! He was beyond thorough so I trust him there and with the teeth! My amalgam was a WHOLE TOOTH, even my other dentist said GOD THATS HUGE and would not tough it, it cracked too! That means it leaked? That messed me up badly, I had a few crack before in my life. This one was monumental though, a whole moler of Amalgam? Damn.

Excellent advice, Bex, thank you. This is the first thing I've done in a whole year that seems to work, so in a way I'm relieved. I'm on day 2 of my round and the headache and stomach ache are back mildly, along with general bodyache and a bit of pain in my chest again. I think you'd expect this as a round progresses. It also seems to be a good sign that I feel this way on such a low chelator dose -- I must really be ready to get rid of this stuff.
I think I need to start a new thread for further comments . . . I am NOT chelating with ALA alone, LOL.

That messed me up badly, I had a few crack before in my life. This one was monumental though, a whole moler of Amalgam? Damn. Yeah, even ONE amalgam filling can certainly cause problems in some people. I'm hyper sensitive to metals as well as the fact I do not excrete them properly. With the still remaining bit of amalgam, I was still improving from years of chelation. And as I said, it did not prevent the dumping stage from happening. Post amalgam removal for me meant a far worse scenario, because I was no longer suppressed from the amalgams being present. Once they were gone, that's when all hell broke loose. Yes I was severely poisoned beforehand with amalgams - but I was able to control symptoms to some extent via diet etc. Once the amalgams were gone, wow, nothing held the symptoms back. Though diet was helpful, the symptoms of mercury were unleashed to the full. So I really could not control them and had to chelate. I was so obviously poisoned by the unleashing of stored mercury, that my face was gaunt and very pale. I was a mess. A top doctor here in my country told me that this had caused my body to begin trying to heal, whereas with amalgam it was unable to do it, as it was dealing with the daily intake instead and trying to store the mercury as best as it could. Now that amalgam was gone, it no longer needed to remain in storage mode and went into dump mode. This is the cause for many to experience an increase in symptoms, a sense of "repoisoning" and at times great distress if they do not understand what is happening (as I didn't). I was helped with the DMSA chelation (every 4 hour routine). This began to chelate the stuff out properly, rather than move it about. It was quicker too and more effective. Plus vitamin C, E and selenium. I didn't take other vitamins at that time, but even they were of help along with a sugar/wheat/gluten/yeast free diet. Either way, it still takes time to get the poison out and enough of it out to where you start feeling like you should again. I noticed I was healing when I started getting patches of feeling really good. I mean it would hit out of the blue. I was cleaning oneday and I was in my wardrobe cleaning out my closet and I thought omg, I feel normal...I feel good and I had to just sit there and soak it up. Of course, the remaining mercury descended on me like a cloud again, but the patches I was getting were indicators that things were shifting. Unfortunately, more stored mercury would surface and cloud things up again, but the process of elimination was well and truly happening. It's usually a roller coaster ride though.

I think I need to start a new thread for further comments . . . I am NOT chelating with ALA alone, LOL. You're welcome Linda. I really hope this is going to prove to be of help to you, preferably the cure (we all hope that). Yeah as the round progresses, if you are toxic, the symptoms usually increase. But some people simply feel better on chelation or some rounds are different than others. When I was toxic enough for DMSA to work, I used to start feeling wretched by a few days into it and it would get worse and worse as it went on. I would often have to stop the round early. It's interesting that you are having such effects now on a low dose of chelator and I think this means it's well and truly working. I think you should start a new thread "Chelating with ALA AND DMSA" It will be interesting to see how it pans out. What symptoms you get along the way and whether some rounds will be different from others in how you feel and what you experience. Keep us posted. And best wishes on this! I am really interested to see how things go, it encourages me to get started on it....funny because last time I tried, my body failed to gain any symptoms (apart from yeast, though I hear that is a sign in itself). Maybe my body will this time?

My gut feeling, Bex, is that you should try ALA, and start on a very low dose so that your body gets used to it and you can monitor your symptoms.
I can start another thread, though I'm not sure how often I'd add to it. "Epistemologicus" used to to that too . . . wonder what happened to him.

Yes, I think so too Linda. But at the moment my state of health is terrible and I'm not recuperating from the probiotic use. If I could turn back time, even just a bit, I'd never have taken them. So I cannot use ALA in the state I'm in - my gut is in a mess and so am I. If I do not improve from this...I don't know. So far there is no improvement and it' been many weeks, possibly a couple of months .

Someone on the FDC forum wrote that she'd had a similar experience, and she thought it was caused by yeast. Do you belong to that group? I'm finding them really helpful.

Yeah I do belong to that group. They are very well informed. Probiotics are meant to help, not harm long term. So I think something is wrong with them or myself that has reacted so badly. I'm sorry that somebody else seems to have had similar happen! I'm surprised to hear this...

Bex, have you tried some detox teas? They have helped me. You might want to try alfalfa, red clover, dandelion, licorice root, and ginger to help detoxify yourself. Are you taking molybdenum? That also helps with detoxification. When I was at my worst, parasite cleanses and those herbs helped me. I am now taking echinacea and goldenseal, as well plenty of cayenne pepper, which seems to be getting rid of plenty of candida. I had been forced to take many months off chelation, but am now chelating again. Perhaps you should try adding some of the herbs I mentioned to your regimen. Of all those I mentioned, the cayenne pepper, echinacea, and goldenseal are probably the ones that made me strong enough to start chelating again.

Good going that you are into spices too JK, I was into Cayenne until I started getting short of breath and felt bad, I think I am allergic? Go figure? Turmeric I might try next, hopefully that can get me started in a rhythm on some spices. Molybdenum I need to start taking, it's great stuff I heard for detox of Copper and yeast alcohols right? I need to get that started soon. Could it be Candida die offs for Cayenne instead of an allergy? I have to look into that and think of that, maybe I am not allergic to it since I could tolerate it for a few weeks until one night. It does kill Candida though and parasites, thats proven. I read somewhere Cayenne, Cumin or Curry could help clear out 41% of Candida in two weeks!!! I have that in a magazine my mom bought, some great stuff if you use it daily. It also says it will prevent reoccurence. I am trying Oral Oxygen right now (Oxyflush) which has Peroxide food grade, Noni and Aloe, I hope that can help as I have read Oxygen can do wonders for Candida. Good post though, you always come with some informative stuff for me to use or us to use in daily life. I did well on the Cayenne for a few weeks, maybe it's just detox I was having and took too much too early and it was not allergy. I will try it again soon, I want to use it daily as it is an incredible herb. If I can't use that I will try Turmeric, which is supposedly similar in things it does.

I have herbal teas like peppermint tea, green tea, lemon/ginger etc. But not all the ones you have mentioned. I tried licorice and won't do it again - too sweet and caused yeast issues. I may add some more of the things you have mentined, but right now because of what's happened to me, I'm somewhat uncomfortable about doing anything new. I'm not confident at all and still trying to recover from probiotics, which SHOULD have been helpful, rather than harmful, but I do not have a strange gut condition so it's probably not too surprising. I never found echinacea/golden seal to be of aid to me much. Some people respond well, I never did. I felt worse and I have heard it can cause virus' to proliferate. How true that is? I don't know, but I read it onetime and got put off. But I have heard it helps the immune system, but should not be taken permanently, but rather a time on period and a time off period, so it continues to be effective.

"I take Alfalfa will the pills help out too? " I guess the fresh is best, but I don't have easy access to it, so I am using the tablets. " I was into Cayenne until I started getting short of breath and felt bad, " That seems odd, as it seems to help me breathe better. "Turmeric I might try next, hopefully that can get me started in a rhythm on some spices" Turmeric is great stuff. I love Indian food! "Antifungal Herbs Turmeric - Turmeric is demonstrated to have antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, antifungal, and anti-cancer properties. It is taken as a blood purifier, and seems to have blood sugar lowering effects" "Molybdenum I need to start taking, it's great stuff I heard for detox of Copper and yeast alcohols right?" Yes, although copper is also essential, and unless someone is sure they have an excess of copper, those taking a high dosage of molybdenum should take some supplemental copper at a different meal than the mlybdenum. It seems like some mercury toxic people have an excess of copper, while others may be deficient. Copper is necessary for making hemoglobin, as is iron. http://www.candida-cure-recipes.com/antifungal-herbs.htmlhttp://www.innvista.com/health/herbs/turmeric.htm"Could it be Candida die offs for Cayenne instead of an allergy?" Cayenne make my nose run and clears my sinuses. After blowing my nose well, I breathe better. "Good post though, you always come with some informative stuff for me to use or us to use in daily life." Thanks. I try to find good inexpensive things to take. Oil of oregano is good, but expensive! I guess it is worth it though when the cheaper stuff doesn't work. It is the best thing for clearing blocked sinuses. Cayenne is good and much cheaper. Some brands of cayenne powder is weak though. It has to be very hot to be effective. I threw out the weak stuff I accidentaly bought a few weeks ago. The strong cayenne powder was still pretty cheap anyway. Curry has turmeric as its main ingredient, but also has cumin. I guess instead of buying turmeric next time, I could buy curry powder instead. Ginger and garlic are imo also amazing for fighting candida. Ginger also soothes the digestive system and helps minimize cramping and flatulence. Licorice root and cinnamon are amazing. Antifungal and sweet, yet that have almost no calories(cinnamon has a small bit of complex carbs). I have a theory that some who suffer from candida might get away with eating starchy foods if they are eaten with large amounts of garlic or cinnamon. I also use plenty of onion powder on my food. While onion powder is not as strong as garlic in antifungal terms, it adds a different more mild flavor. In addition to using the powdered herbs, I also use ginger, cinnamon, and peppermint essential oils. I use the Now brand which is pretty cheap. I put 3 drops of each in a tablespoon of coconut oil or mix them with some water. Ginger, peppermint, and cinnamon together tastes interesting!

Bex, here's something that may interest you: from sourceOne reason that people are sensitive to probiotics is that it breaks the cell wall of the candida and releases mercury, which the probiotics then can potentially methylate. I know I still have a lot of mercury in my gut (from swallowing mercury on 3 occasions, and from my old type I and type II fillings, and from all the failed DMPS/DMSA treatments which only got a little out and circulated it around my body and nearly killed me), which is why I take enteric coated probiotics, which make it through the acid stomach environment and release in the small intestine.

Thanks for that Linda. It may have been that or something similar. I feel like the yeast has come back worse though. Because I"m now gurgling in the gut daily, which usually happens only when I cheat on my diet - yet I've not cheated. That plus bloating and pain.
So it's possible either yeast has come back stronger and/or perhaps the probiotics displaced bacteria/toxins in the gut to where they have made me very sick. Kind of a backlash.
I certainly have experienced candida being killed and releasing mercury. That was from antifungal use. But it was not like this. Doesn't feel the same. I was very ill yes but it was obvious what it as and I chelated it back out. I knew and felt it was metals. This feels different. Toxic, but different.
Though it might still be a similar problem. I certainly will not be using them gain and I advise other people to be cautious.

bex, if i may add i also feel a different kind of toxic reaction from using probiotics and antifungals. I think the reason is thatthey work in a different manner, antifungals more like poke holes in the yeast and release its contents, probiotics do something else, more like push out , rip out the yeast from the gut wall, hence perhaps the pain u've been experiencing.

Have you got any DMSA left, Bex? Enough to do a gentle round?
Months and months ago, I took a 200mg cap of ALA, as a little test to see if it would provoke any reaction in me. (I do not recommend this.) It seemed to. I then took some DMSA for a few days and that cleared the symptoms. DMSA is good at mopping up mercury in the bloodstream.
You'd think I would have got the hint then, LOL. It still took a long time after that before I was convinced that I needed to continue to chelate.
I think the probiotics were competing with the candida and dislodged it or caused some die-off. Death of mercury-laden candida equals mercury in the bloodstream. I know you say it feels different from what you're used to, but it's still a possibility.

Bex, I think your pain is from improper digestion. you are probably not making enough stomach acid, and probably deficient in some digestive enzymes. You could try taking some digestive enzymes, and avoid hard to digest foods(perhaps also replacing raw vegetables with different ones that are cooked?). Many talk about a raw diet, however imo those who have such digestive problems need to avoid raw vegetables. You might also want to consider taking betain HCL, which is an acid supplement. If you do, start out slow, and stop taking it if you get adverse effects. I know that I made some negative comments before about algin and activated charcoal, however if you are having such bad digestive problems, you might want to try taking these for a short period of time. Some might recommend psyllium, however I suggest staying away from it, as it clogged me up quite severely the last time I took it. Yes, I did drink plenty of water with it,and still has a bad reaction to it. Imo you should also try taking alfalfa for a while. I am using tablets, but others eat fresh alfalfa. Another thing you might want to try for a short period of time is bentonite. I have never used bentonite, but others got relief from it. Its action might be like activated charcoal in that it adsorbs many things, including undesirable things as well as vitamins and minerals, so imo it should be used carefully just for short periods of time.

Bex, you could also load up on ginger and peppermint to help calm your digestive system and cut down on flatulence. You mentioned you have peppermint and ginger tea, but you might want to try the essential oils which are much stronger and more concentrated than teas. I take 3 drops of each as well as cinnamon oil. now usually once a day, but for a while I was taking these 2 or 3 times a day.

"If vitamin A comes from carotene then at least the body can make its own and it won't make more than it needs."
Carotene isn't vitamin A though. While the body can theoretically convert carotene to vitamin A, some may be deficient in the enzymes required to do this. Taking too much carotene or eating too many carrots will make your skin orange. While this is not dangerous, it looks very strange. Carotene is good as an antioxidant, however imo it is not a good thing to take for vitamin A. If you want to be conservative, you could limit vitamin A intake to 5,000-10,000 units a day, and also take some carotene.

Yeah, I have heard that probiotics (good bacteria) compete with and displace the bad. The problem with this is, my gut condition (which is abnormal), only began after this virus and dental work (tooth extraction/replacement of an old composite). I can pinpoint it right back to this, NOT mercury. Even though mercury may have been at the root of this being able to happen to me. So my responses to seemingly harmful and ordinary products are not normal. People come up with explanations, but it's my response that is more abnormal than any action on the products part. I never used to be like this. I used to respond normally to things like this (I'd get die off).

Hi JK98, My digestion is fine. Nothing wrong with it. I have taken digestive enzymes before to no avail. If you read my post to Jinx, I have had a strange gut condition since virus and further dental work (unrelated to amalgam). That's when this began. My response to products is not the same as it was and it's not digestion that is the issue here. It is lower gut problem that has existed for years. So my reactions to normal products can be bizzare and extreme (e.g. garlic supplement causing me to go into hospital). My response to the recent probiotics is the cause for the pain/bloating. It is not digestion. I digest my food just fine and in fact can consume raw foods with no problems whatsoever. My gut retains whatever happens. E.g. if I take a supplement, the response will be contained (toxins and all), so I can suffer many months afterwards. After the garlic supplement, I suffered 7 months of total misery and agony before the toxins eventually made their way out. I did use some DMSA and it helped get them out quicker. Which convinced me the garlic supplement had shunted metals/mercury into the gut. If anything happens to me, it goes right to the gut. Again ONLY AFTER the viral/dental work did this start to occur. As for the raw vegetables? I hadn't been eating any for a long time. This pain started after probiotics, and has nothing to do with raw foods. It has everything to do with my existing lower gut problem. I have only just now started consuming some raw vegetables. They have not made anything worse from what I've noticed, so it's just a try to see if they may help. I also eat alfalfa now too. Plus, when this happened the other time from garlic supplements, I used charcoal, everything to try and get things out of me or soak things up, but I do not recall it working for me. DMSA kind of did, but only because it was clearly mercury at that time. This time? I don't know because DMSA quit working for sometime ago.

Cayenne helps to digest your proteins and produce stomach acid as well correct? I know it aids in digestion too, when I use it I get alot less of the runs and better digestion. Cayenne she might want to take a crack at too to see if it helps, that or Turmeric.
In Sanskrit, tulsi means literally "the incomparable one" and has been revered since ancient times. Tulsi, the holy basil, is said to have grown at the site of Christ’s crucifixion and is associated with St. Basil’s feast.

Were you put on antibiotics? Sometimes during dental work(or even perhaps a dental cleaning?) an isolated infection in the teeth or gums might spread through the digestive tract.

I know you say it feels different from what you're used to, but it's still a possibility. Hi Linda, I have found some DMSA - but I think it's old. So I'm not sure what to do....I could try it I guess, if anything it'll be either ineffective/no longer potent or it might do something or nothing. So I can't think it'll hurt. I'll leave it today because I have my nephew to look after, but I may try tommorrow instead. Thanks for the suggestion. lol, well the reaction you got from another try of ALA was definitely an indication - but again sometimes there are so many things going on with your health at once, you don't know what to concentrate on or when. However, if you get any response from ALA (or DMSA), I think personally that should probably be a priority. My only reaction from ALA is yeast. That is all I have to go by, because there are no metal detox symptoms at all. Which is kind of odd, because existing mercury has ALWAYS given symptoms with chelation for me of metals coming out. Now it doesn't. Only worse yeast, which apparently IS an indication. Yeah what you said about the probiotics could well have been the case. Maybe dislodging toxin containing bacteria which has just flared everything up in the gut. Not a good thing with my gut. Plus in doing so, you can cause the yeast to flare up even worse, as it does apparently around damaged areas/toxins. To kill it off continually doesn't seem to help such a situation, but it grows back where the damage is. All I get is a flood of toxins, a backfire and worse trouble for my efforts. Again, this never used to be the case before the gut condition occured. I used to get die off like anybody else and feel worse at first, then better.\ Anyway, thanks I'll give the old DMSA a try, but I can't guarantee it's potency! I smelt it though and that was pretty potent. Yikes.

Bex, can I ask why you are sure that most of these problems are due to yeast? Are you going by symptoms? Because you diet has been so super-clean for so long, I can only think of these reasons why you would have a yeast problem: a) it is sequestering mercury, or b) your immune system isn't functioning well. Maybe ALA isn't the best chelator for mercury in the gut? Maybe you've got rid of it in certain areas but it's stored up in other areas. This is only a guess of course. Please let us know how things go with the DMSA, best of luck

An interesting article about cayenne. http://www.shirleys-wellness-cafe.com/cayenne.htmImo the most cost effective supplements(biggest bang for the buck) are 1) Vitamin C- Very cheap, especially when bought in bulk by the pound. 2) B vitamins. Generic B50 tablets might be under $5 for 100. 3) Cayenne powder-Very inexpensive, but make sure you get a very hot variety. The mild ones are almost worthless 4) Garlic- Raw garlic is best, but if you can't stand it, then garlic powder or garlic pills could be used. 5) cinnamon 6) Licorice root

"Because you diet has been so super-clean for so long, I can only think of these reasons why you would have a yeast problem: a) it is sequestering mercury, or b) your immune system isn't functioning well."
It's a vicious cycle. Mercury toxicity, then candida flareup. Malabsorption due to the candida, then inadequate stomach acid production, improper mineral absorption, improper digestive enzyme formation, then constipation and more yeast flareup. If the body can't properly detoxify from the acetylaldehyde produced by the candida, then one may not be able to detoxify properly from other toxins, and then multiple chemical sensitivity can set in. A good test to see if you are very acetylaldehyde toxic is if you have a strong reaction when exposed to perfumes, as most perfumes contain aldehydes. Molybdenum helps diminish this chemical sensitivity.
Many here have had problems with parasites. Low stomach acid and candida overgrowth makes one much more succeptipble to parasite infection. Vitamin A helps prevent parasite infection, as does garlic, cayenne, ginger, and some other spices.
