Tom,

The Bible and Christ speak directly to the heart of this matter for the question that really needs to be answered is whether the Bible was authored by God.
  • If so, then you're in great error.
  • If not, then you're right; It's just a book that some can use for whatever perceived value it has.

Using logic and reason, I have deduced—as I believe the vast majority of people who have actually studied it have—that the Bible is in fact God's inspired writings to us. Having not studied it, the mentality behind what you're saying is perfectly analogous to the mercury issue.

Many people I tell about the mercury issue—which I have also studied and verified its validity—laugh, ignore, or otherwise hold the opinion that it's a farce. However, when they actually look into it, they eventually discover its validity.

The problem is all based around false witnesses—and there's a world full of them. Considering how the mass media hates the scripture, and that they slander it so frequently (say things about it that are not true; Knowing the scripture, I see this myself all the time) it's not surprising then that many assume that these fortune tellers and false witnesses are assumed to be telling the truth. To allow this assumption to become opinion is illogical. For as many assume that when the ADA, NIH, ACS, and all the other lying acronyms falsely claim mercury is safe, many suffer, not directly because of the lie, but because the lie is assumed to be true (very important).

Again, all the things you are saying about the Bible are completely based on hearsay and assumptions and have no validity until you study it for yourself. I hope you do because, if you are a logical person (as I assume you are), you will come to the same great conclusion that so many others have before you.

For these reasons, I highly recommend exercising the those three beautiful—inescapable—words that keep logic, reason and intellectual honesty at the forefront of our lives, and those words are:

"I don't know".

One last thing...

I think the fact that people use the Bible to prove that God both wants us to eat meat and not eat meat is a pretty clear example of the futility of using the Bible as an authority -- it's totally up to human interpretation and cannot be verified logically. (please note that's not a slander, just a fact). That also does not mean what is written in the bible is not "true", just that it cannot be verified.

That's quite a leap. Nevertheless, it perfectly drives home the point I have been making about how you are making assumptions based on other peoples opinions—hearsay.

My advice? Don't judge truth by the conclusions of others. Big mistake. Also, careful when making leaps of "logic" that say that differing opinions mean source information cannot be verified. Not everyone is logical or there may not be enough information given to draw a solid conclusion on certain non-critical subjects so people add their own opinions. It's a big mistake to obliterate the possibility of all verifable logic because people have opinions.

So often I have discovered that when people do this (what the previous statement says) it is nothing more than an excuse to not do something they simply emotionally don't want to do (check out the Bible for themselves). It's a copout. I don't like excuses. Nevertheless, you must explore the information yourself or take the risk that I'm right. Make no mistake,
  • There's plenty of information in the Bible that can be verified, and
  • The risk of ignoring it is huge.

Tom, I do hope you invest the time to thoroughly check it out.
