I am unable to keep hens at the moment, but I agree it is an ideal solution I will look into organic hen farming. Demi, I understand your aversion to meat. However, if you find in the future that you want to try animal protein without killing an animal, perhaps organic eggs are the way to go. They don't have to be fertile eggs - so you are not killing anything. And, if you have even a small back yard, if it is legal in your area, you can have chickens yourself and get fresh eggs every morning. I got chickens two years ago. Not only do we like the eggs, but chickens are lovely, funny pets. But, if you can't keep chickens, often organic free range eggs are sold in the store. One of the reasons I got chickens was to save some chickens from the horrible fate of egg production as it is practised today. They are free-range and run around our yard all day. Or, if you buy organic, you are encouraging farmers to go free-range with their chickens. Maybe, if enough people do this, most chickens will have better lives.
