Food companies are competing over monosodium glutamate claims as Progresso announces that added MSG is being removed from all its soups following a rival ad campaign.

Progresso, which is owned by General Mills, said that it has made the announcement now in response to current competitive advertising in the category, particularly from Campbell Soup.

Kyle Duea, marketing manager for Progresso, said 26 of its soups are already MSG free and the company would have preferred to announce the change when they had implemented this strategy across the Progresso line.

However, the company said that in recent advertising for Select Harvest soup, Campbell referred to MSG, making “unflattering comparisons” to Progresso soups that have not been reformulated.

Duea said Progresso expects its strategy to put pressure on Campbell.

The additive MSG is mainly used as a flavor enhancer for foods such as soups, ready meals, fish and meat dishes.

However, ingredients companies have been developing alternatives to MSG as it has fallen out of favor among manufacturers and consumers following health concerns.

The publication BrandWeek reported last month that Campbell had launched an ad taking direct aim at its rival. The advert in the New York Times showed a can of Progresso with the caption "Made With MSG". It ran alongside an image of Campbell's Select Harvest soup with caption "Made With TLC", or "tender love and care".

In September Campbell Soup launched its Select Harvest soups range to appeal to more label-conscious consumers by spelling out on tin exactly what has gone into it and ingredients that have been avoided.

The ingredients it avoided included MSG, high fructose corn syrup, artificial flavors and hydrogenated oils. The packaging affected the 44 new soups.

However, Campbell highlighted that some of the soups contained yeast extract, a natural ingredient that contains a small amount of naturally occurring monosodium glutamate. Naturally occurring glutamate is also found in foods like mushrooms, cheese and tomatoes.

Monosodium glutamate

In 1959, the US Food and Drug Administration classified MSG as a "generally recognized as safe".

Since then some academics have warned of health risks from consuming MSG. In 1992, the FDA asked an independent group of scientists - The Federation of American Societies for Experimental Biology (FASEB) - to complete a review of available scientific data on glutamate safety.

The report reaffirmed the safety of MSG when consumed at usual levels. A large dose would be three grams or more per meal. A typical serving of glutamate-treated food contains less than 0.5 grams of MSG.

However it did identify short-term reactions known as MSG Symptom Complex, which people can experience after eating large doses of MSG, particularly on an empty stomach, as well as those with severe and poorly controlled asthma.

Symptoms include numbness, burning sensation, tingling, facial pressure or tightness, chest pain, headache, nausea, rapid heartbeat, and drowsiness.

Thanks for the information and the article.

I will point out that some of this article is spun as the statement above omits the difference between naturally occurring glutamate and that which is typically added to foods.

The argument given and the wordage that associates it with "natural" is an age-old lie.

The best source of in depth information about this is this awesome video:

Hi Russ
Yeah I agree with the whole age old lie thing...nothing should be added to our food! It has taken me a long time to convince my husband that just because it has the words natural on it does not mean there has not been dangerous chemicals added to it. Funny he is beginning to get it but it took me getting sicker than a dog for him to understand this whole concept. Not that he made me sick but after seeing me so sick and some so called natural stuff still making me feel bad he began to read the labels and so the light came on! LOL

I am very careful about what I buy...I always read the labels and MSG seems to be a big problem with me. It always makes my stomach have problems and hurt like crazy.

Get this...when I got sick I stopped buying regular meat and have been buying natural beef at HEB, well lately I have had a hard time finding it in the store. That is the only place in town to buy it too! Yesterday I was getting grocerys and I asked one of the butchers why they did not have it anymore and he said they did not want them to sell it. I said who and of course he just looked at me and smiled...then I got it. I said oh who, he shrugged his shoulders and smiled...I said it's the government huh and of course he smiles again and just nods nicely. What a farce they want ya sick no matter what...it's all about the money and now they just want us dead and out of their way. BTW I tried some regular meat last night and instantly had stomach problems so I guess I will become a vegetarian. He did tell me that Heb in midland still sells it which means I have to travel 60 miles round trip to get the meat I can eat. I will too because there is no way I am gona damage all the work I've done on clearing all this crap from my body. Just thought that might interest someone and also explain why it's gona get harder to find any decent foods.

Most meats are injected with a shot of "natural flavorings". The natural flavorings is your MSG cocktail. It will list it somewhere on the packaging. Sometimes it is in very small print. You don't want to buy the crappy meat anyway because there is estrogen and antibotics in them too.

Unfortunately to eat healthy in this country you have to shop at Whole Foods or another organic store. We drive 100 miles round trip just to eat healthy and I don't regret it whatsoever.

I used to buy meat from www.grasslandbeef.com , I would just wait for the ground beef to go on sale and then order like 20-40 lbs and they ship it frozen. It was really good and I saved a lot of money than buying good beef from wholefoods.

I would not touch any conventional meat...those factory farms are absolutely horrendous and not something I would give a penny to support. Even conventional produce has a drastic impact on the environment and the runoff from the farms has devastating effects on the waterways.

Want clean meat?

Eat kosher or halal... google "uric acid and halal"...
However, some halal meat aparantly contain some vinegar in it...
I got dizzy and sleepy after halal meat from one source each time..
same as with vinegar...

Us amalgam poisoned bodies don't like candida die offs very well, caused by an antifungal such as vinegar amongst others....

Btw.. the meat smelled of vinegar too... but hey... the quality and cleanness of that meat was uniqe to what i have been raised on...

Halal is great! however, get halal meat that hasn't been vinegared if you are candida or mercury sick!
