A Health Code Of Preventive Medicine?
Why does the Old Testament forbid sexual intercourse during menstruation (Leviticus 18:19).?
Though many consider this instruction a throwback to an unenlightened, superstitious era, some doctors have a different opinion. A study appearing in the Journel of Reproductive Medicine, volume 34(11),1989, indicates a health risk for women who on occasion or often have vaginal intercourse during menstruation.
Theses women tend to have a greater risk for developing painfull cysts on the ovaries or other pelvic organs. This condition is a common cause of infertility, according to the American Medical Association.
Dewitt W. Brown, M.D., of Indianapolis, Indiana, says vaginal intercourse during menstruation is an overlooked mode of transmitting hepatitis and acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS). " My thinking about it is since theses diseases are transmitted by exposure to blood, menstruation is about the most dangerous time for vaginal intercourse, " says Dr Brown.
Some studies suggest the AIDS virus passes more readily from a women to a man during this time. Dr Brown points out that the woman is also more vunerable to recieving infection during menstruation. He feels its best for both the man and the women to abstain from vaginal intercourse at that time. A November 1991 survey of medical hot lines by Time magazine gives the same advice.
Though some rites of the Old Testament no longer apply, Leviticus 18:19 is a health code of preventive medicine.
