Hi Russ, ((( Smiles )))
I was reading your post up above and with one that has hyperacusis and tinnitus, I've done alot of research over the years just on that subject and found alot of interesting things.. This question has been asked before by others who have hyperacusis.. The underlining reasons why some people are more susceptible to ear problems... then others is not understood and though there are various catalysts there's that underlining thing.. Yes... I've thought long and hard about what that underlining thing could be?? That makes ones ears/brain more vunerable then another and could weaken ones auditory system.. And it's interesting that you note that you had theses symptoms when you were mercury toxic and so because of this fact... it causes you to consider that hyperacusis is related to mercury toxicity .. Interesting question of " What happened in your life before the hyperacusis began? And sometimes not an easy one for someone with hyperacusis to allways answer because some people don't know why it happened to them.. And what can trigger hyperacusis in one.. may not trigger it in another... Or many others for that matter as it's not rare, yet uncommon.. There's that vunerability part there and as hyperacusis can also be acquired as a result of damage to the brain or the neurological system or a head injury.. And mercury can cause damage/injury to the brain it's a neuro toxin and mercury can cause auditory disturbances and abnormal sound sensitivites so why not??? It can cause neurological problems.. Auditory disturbances.. Neurological symptoms.. And it happened that way for you... I find it very interesting that you are also a sound engineer.. So you would know about white noise pink noise broadband therapies.. Or what pink noise ect.. would sound like... It's not a cure for hyperacusis as there is no cure at this time.. But it can help one maximize the tolerances left in one's ears.. It's a desensitization retraining therapy.. That can help one gain back their toleraces in various degrees of betterment.. Though not a cure but can be a like cure in the best of circumstances.. Thats the best treatment we have right now for H... And tinnitus as well unless it's medical related or a fixable thing... A broadband therapy is usually the way to go... Still looking for a cure though... Interesting subject hyperacusis is.. One that I find interesting of course... And many others also as well..
Take Care Lynn

Hi Russ, ((((( Smiles )))))
I'm sorry but I'm haveing alittle trouble in menuvering around the board.. I'll figure it out but.. Is there two different hyperacusis forums?? One listed in disease's and one listed here.. Am I suppose to post here or there or.. Are they the same but it doesn't seem so because I don't see my post there.. This is just different then the network I've been on for awhile now but it's a nice set up too.. I like it.... I think I read your mercury story I'm not sure if I read it all yet.. I'll figure it out but I wanted to say.... I believe you and I know how it feels to be misunderstood by others as well.. the stories of people with hyperacusis disorder may seem incredible almost unbelievable to others who don't expirence this but it's so true.. You should read the stories about the sounds or noise that devestated peoples lives. a yell, a scream, an MRI , powertools, nightclubs, sporting events, eating out at a loud place , noises at work, machine noises to a kiss blown into the ear ect ... Sound, noise that other people aren't effected by but it leads use to hyperacusis.. And as most people who come down with hyperacusis from noise trauma were in the company of individuals who survived the event with little or no side effects.. Our ears have been damaged by sound that does not hurt the normal ear.. Some times telling our stories are like telling yours because it's incredible that this happened to us.. too other people but it did.. can't explain all of it but it did.. It's true!
But medications/drugs can cause hyperacusis as well.. Medication, toxins, noise ect.... Lymes disease can cause hyperacusis as well...
There are different terms that are used in hyperacusis or other sound , neurological ect problems.. Like phonophobia is the fear of sound... And misophonia is the dislike of sound.. And SSSS4 means select soft sound sensitivity ... Sensitive to particular sounds, or certain letters or words ect... and others have also used the word misophonia for that or it's seperated in two types.. as they are unable to tolerate the sounds of eating or chewing or lip smacking ect... It's different then classic hyperacusis were all sounds can be expirenced as loud.. but hyperacusis can also contain other symptoms as well... And people can expirence it differently in what bothers them the most or different catagories of H... From severe to a milder form...
There is so much debate on all this and different opinions on this topic.. Of descriptions but one thing is so true.. This is something we expirence as incredible as it sounds.. To others... And have a nice weekend.. I'll be off soon to come back maybe next week.. Thanks for creating this forum.. on hyperacusis and other things that can go with it too like.. Tinnitus, myoclonus ect..... Plus hyperacusis is a symptom of something that went wrong.. With many triggering events, medical conditions ects.. The subject is really deep...
Have a nice weekend ... I'm off.... Take Care Lynn

This post originally made by Abishag <>< but accidentally deleted by Russ. Here is the repost (Sorry...My mistake).
Hello Lynn,
Thank you for all the information that you have so eloquently posted on Hyperacusis and tinnitus, on this website. Yourself being a 'sucess story' to a previous website, is proof- positive that you know what you are talking about.
I am also a Hyperacusis/tinnitus person. My condition came as a result of a 'brain aneurysm' surgery. The Hyperacusis keeps me living a very 'sheltered life'. Since most all sounds are too loud in this noise polluted world of ours..
I am kept inside most of the time.....the little shopping that I do must be done with earplugs intact. I have had to leave Walmart because the sounds of people and the intercom system is 'overly loud' to my sound sensitivity. There are Micro-Tech hearing aids that REDUCE sounds, rather than enhance them. They are very expensive and most Insurances do not cover them, so I'm told.
Thank you, Russ for permitting this 'hearing impairment' ' to be addressed on your website. Perhaps other people will be able to understand what they are going through and mostly to know that 'they are not alone' in this condition.
God bless you for this website and for informing people about various conditions that cause many to be bewildered, frustrated, and lonely.

Hi Abishag, ((( Smiles ))) Thank You so much.. That was very nice of you... Sorry it took so long to get back to you as I've been mostly on the the other board but plan to post here more eventually.. Did you see Annies mailbox yesterday.. On reply to " need a good laugh" about the husband that won't let his wife watch TV.. And we know how that can be as TV at one time for me was about the worst.. Well not the worst but.. pretty bad.. but I wish you were better like me.. I'm not cured cured... But like cured and we know that not everybody gets as much improvement like I have had and the stats are that in some rare cases, retraining can bring one back nearly 100 % and on the network... we have both been on found 91 % of patients.. who completed the retraining that the average improvement was 15-75%... I haven't had my LDL's checked since long ago when they were 50 51db before my condition got super worse.. But I believe I'm in the high 90's maybe 99 percent improved from the worst of hyperacusis.. I didn't get my normal loudness tolerances back.. I've tested this out and my ears aren't the exact same as before T and H.. But thats a success story because any improvement is success and I've been lucky as for me.. I've come so far.. But neurologically related and for you brain aneurysm surgery.. I'm not sure how that goes in the rates or stats of getting well/improved.. On Marsha's site.. http://www.hyperacusis.org/wst_page4.html She talks about head injury and hyperacusis and you've probably seen that allready.. But it's interesting how she said hyperacusis may also be related to autoimmune disorders and other inflammatory conditions.. And we know neurological condition's can cause hyperacusis... As well as medications and other things that could cause an inflammatory condition as well... And yes.. That is real nice of Russ that he added hyperacusis to the board.. And plus sorry Abishag.. It's kind of my fault your post got deleted... I posted in the wrong section as that was forum news and I thought it was the newly created hyperacusis site.. And then when I finally realized my mistake.. Well actually ... A nice person we both know kind of brought it to my attention and then I realized what that section was for as we don't have a news forum on the other board.. And so in changeing things around.. I realized I had duplicate threads here.. And I wanted one deleted well.. It was my fault.. But I saved your post so it wasen't lost.. But besides likeing Russ's site and besides him creating a hyperacusis forum here which is a bonus plus.. There is one other reason why I was attracted to this board.. It's because there is something I'm planning on doing and here they seem to relate to that.. And with my hyperacusis expirence it will be real hard to do... But it seems like I could get some support here on how too proceed with doing it.. In that aspect of know how.. And, if I happen to get H again as I allready have a vunerability it seems that lead me to H in the first place.... Well.. This is a hyperacusis forum .... And a hyperacusis forum is where I need to be... A mercury hyperacusis forum.. As people do what I'm going to do on the other board as well...So... It will help me to be able to be more brave and go forward with it.. Like I plan on doing anyway no matter what.. But I'm not totally sure what the outcome will be.. But my tolerances are real good and my ears are real strong.. And it may come out just fine anyway.. And my husband had all his redone.. Well all except one... But I do need to get it done and here I think they would understand when it comes to that.. And why I want to do it.. Besides needing to do certain things anyway.. But get it all done... I want to do just that.... Hyperacusis and tinnitus is the only thing that has held me back.. But most people get it done and come out just fine with it.. Take Care My Friend and Thanks.. Lynn ((((( HUGS To You )))))

A dysfunction of various areas of the brain stem , which results in a central hyperacusis.... http://www.lbctnz.co.nz/sld/autism-asperger.htmlAllergies.. Gluten Free Home..... http://www.glutenfreehome.com/glutenallergies/More prone too.. autoimmune diseases, chemical sensitivity, allergies Sensitivity to Noise..... http://www.betterhealth.vic.gov.au/bhcv2/bhcarticles.nsf/pages/Pink_disease?OpenDocumentTen Years After.... 1965 As is characteristic of patients with cerebellar degeneration, there was neurophysiological evidence of subclinical involvement involvement of auditory and sematosensory pathways at the level of the brainstem.... ----------------------------------------------------------------- Often referred to as Hyperacusis , this condition causes pain or discomfert when an individual is confronted with certain noises at particular frequencies... http://individual.utoronto.ca/elissa/Autism/AuditoryAutismBiblio.html--------------------------------------------------------------------- And what do you think the next big breakthrough might be? This is a question we have asked a number of people and we have had very interesting answers. OK, right when you say breakthrough I think there are areas where we have not covered that must be covered in the new millennium. First of all the repetitive behavior is of special interest. We recognized it from day one but we have no idea why and how. Secondly the sensory perception, the hyperacusis, the tactile defence system which really does impact on the lives of such individuals and yet we do not know physiologically what is going on; we are very much in the dark to what to do. I also suspect the next big breakthrough will be in movement disorders in the autistic spectrum, from Tourette’s disorder to catatonia and we will recognize that some of these kids do have recognizable movement disorder. Finally, I think the new neuroimaging techniques which show which areas of the brain are switched off may well lead to medication which eventually switches them on. I think that is extremely promising. http://www.autismconnect.org/core_files/interviews/transcripts/tony_attwood.htm http://www.algonet.se/~leif/yfDAT65a.htmlI was looking around the web as I do from time to time and I found this post from a women who has autism " AS " and talked about haveing tinnitus and hyperacusis and a spectrum child.. Wow.. Thats hard.. I have two autistic children and went thru the worst tinnitus and hyperacusis expirence myself.. Interesting... I found a doctors paper that said my other children who is hypo in hearing was covering her ears during an exam long long ago. It's amazing the things we can find when cleaning up and going thru things.. I was surprised that was said about her as she's more hypo... My other one went thru the hands over the ears in the class thing.. She's more hyper... Interesting... The person wrote... I do have "Real AS". I don't have "some shadow syndrome". I do pass for normal in the rare situation with predictable processes going on. I also perseverate and have a hard time breaking free from what I am perseverating upon to do something else. When I was young I used to bang my head against my bedroom wall, because it felt good. I stim, I bang my hands together. I do variations of all the autistic stuff, swaying, rocking, tapping, staring, echolalia. I have tinnitus, hyperacusis, sleep difficulties and a spectrum adult child. You will not rediagnose me as having "some shadow syndrome". http://www.mediate.com/comment/viewcomments.cfm?articleid=1443&inclhdr=yes

Hearing Voices ??? Crazy or suffering from hyperacusis... ?????? With Autism.... Note that autism, schizophrenia, epilepsy, etc. have all been associated with hyperacusis and that indeed, certain drugs such as antidepressants, antipsychotics, anesthetics, or recreational drugs can all trigger hypersensitivity to sounds (http://www.audiologyonline.com/articles/arc_disp.asp?id=529&catid=6). http://www.autismhelpforyou.com/Hearing%20Voices.htmAlso... Just in thought.......................... ((( Smiles )))) I was reading in Dr Jastreboff's book TRT Implementing the Neurophysiological Model.... In the glossary.. Neuron... The morphological and functional unit of the nervous system. A neuron comprises a nerve cell body , short radiating process called dendrites and one long process called the axon. The axon plus it's covering or sheath in the nerve fiber. Syn: Nerve cell.... And then I read in the Glossary of his book... Lyme Disease .. A chronic infection transmitted by the animal tick Borrelia burgdorferi, which effects the nervous system among other effects. Hyperacusis is frequently one of the symptoms. Lyme disease is treatable with large doses of antibiotics.... Also I read on page 227 .. The issue of how tinnitus- related neuronal activity is processed within the nervous system is basically still open.... ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Neurons are an interesting thing.. The dendrites.. I have this newspaper articule if I can find it from months ago. I know It stashed it somewhere but it was based on research on what mercury does to the neurons in explanation in research and that word ... dendrites was in that articule.. It's just a facanating subject.. Hypercusis.. besides just being noise related can be caused or trigged by other things as well ... we allready know that.... It's just to early into research to rule everything out as a possible backdoor cause in some people.... That may effect the nervous system nerve cells in action... And that has been shown to effect the hearing in many ways allready.. Thats why some of Marsha posts on certain subjects over the years I've read with high interest.. Inflammation.. Interesting... I think keeping an open mind into research and future finds is how many problems are solved for many different people over time... As there are many other pathways to hyperacusis disorder besides the norm... Research opens up doors.. No matter where it may lead... But people dared to think.... Thats why doctors started washing their hands during invasive percedures.. Others poop pooed that kind of thinking away as bizarre but they dared to think.. Out of the box.. Out of the norm.. It saved lives... ADHD and Hypersensitivity...... My ears are also hypersensitive and loud, or high-pitched sounds leave my ears ringing. I keep the volume on the radio and TV turned way down (which bothers everyone else in the house because they cannot hear it). If I hear an unusual sound (usually no one else hears it) I cannot focus anything else until I find the source of the sound. Once that is established I can return to what I was doing. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ As for sound, I hear things others don't. People think I am hearing things, but then eventually they hear what I hear too. (e.g. I'll hear a train coming before others will. I'll hear a cat meowing because it's trapped in a closet when no-one else will). Also, I have close to perfect pitch (in music). I play music by ear. (I've taught myself). I can hear little things in music like a 7th or a suspension. (like hearing the difference between: D, Dsus, Dsus7, D add E, etc). Maybe that's partly experience, but I think it is sound sensitivity as well. ----------------------------------------------------------------------- I always thought I was just spoiled or weird (or something). People in my family would tell me that I was exaggerating these things. (Those rolled eyeballs, as if to say "what you're telling me can't possibly be true.") It was so comforting to read that these phenomenas were indeed common with many neurological disorders. Some of these are also seen in Bipolar Disorder, Epilepsy and Autism-- especially the sound. My daughter, who is autistic, covers her ears quite often. My guess is that she is hypersensitive to sounds-- and then gets over-stimulated. One of my medications, Tegretol, can also have the side effect of causing extreme sensitivity to sound/s (AKA "Hyperacusis"). ------------------------------------------------------------------------ http://www.addforums.com/forums/archive/index.php/t-2365.html

Blessings to everyone in the wonderful name of our Lord Jesus! Thank you once again, Russ, for including Hyperacusis and Tinnitus on your website. When I first registered on a prior website, there were only 12 members (1990). That list has grown to almost 2,000 now. It seems more people have this 'condition' and simply do not know what it is, how to deal with it, they are not alone, and there are methods to handle living in this noise polluted world. The person who has Hyperacusis must wear ear plugs while out in this noisey world. I also have a 'ZEM' headset that I must wear while vacumming, or if there are loud trucks on the road in front of our home. If anyone is interested in the website for the ZEM, it is <www.ZemZone.com> This little 'gadget' allows me to use my ice crusher, and other appliances, with 'high pitched sounds'. Yes, it is true, that I hear sounds that my husband does not hear...someone driving into our driveway, the garbage truck coming (over 2 blocks away), the mailman putting mail into the box out front, someone talking/leaving a message on my answering machine (while the sound is turned off) ..they are faint sounds, but I know someone is leaving a message...,etc, etc. I can hear if a vehicle pulls into the driveway in front , it has gravel and rocks. Even my kitty cat can cry (ever so faintly) and I know she is in need of help. Like if she accidentally gets shut into the closet.<img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/catbye.gif" alt="" /> The sound of paper bags being opened from a grocery store, or the ruffling of plastic bags like the potato chips and doritos comes in, crumbling of aluminum foil , etc, etc. is almost unbearable. I must leave the room. Oh! And the sound of someone's fork, spoons, etc hitting against a bowl or plate is awful! To cope in our home, I simply wear compacted wads of cotton in my ears. There is a sign on the front door that reads, "please do not knock on the door". People who know us understand 'why' and will either call and leave a message or send a note ahead of time, to expect them. I will close for now, as Miss Mercy (my kitty cat) is walking across the brown paper wrapping on the rolled-up carpets that were just delivered, and I am about to come unglued! We must try to keep a sense of humor in this, or we will go crazy. By the way, I noticed that there is a site on Aspartame mentioned on this Website. Now that one is a BIG NO-NO! for tinnitus! So, dear friends, take care of your ears. Turn down that radio, T.V., stereo, etc. The world is far too noisey. I had my ears checked for the Micro-Tech Hearing Aid (reduces sounds) and was told 'you can hear fine'! I KNOW THAT!! . I hear MORE THAN FINE! I think I had a new person who didn't know what she was talking about. Obviously...... Splenda seems to be the best artificial sweetener for those with tinnitus. Take care everyone. May our Lord bless you all. Thanks again to Lynn for bringing this 'problem' to another website in order to help others. God bless you, dear friend. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/jesuslovesyou.png" alt="" />Abishag

Hi Abishag, (((( Smiles ))))
I like your Kitty Cat... I know about the sounds you are talking about and they use to be just awfull for me at one time as well.. For a long time as it was a process of getting worse and a process of getting better for me.. And better doesn't happen overnight for H.. I wish you were like cured like me because I can handle normal environmental sounds now and some not so normal like car motor sounds ect.. Things to an extent of loudness.. Very rarely do I feel ear pain anymore from that it would have to be real loud.... As I didn't get my normal tolerances back I had pre T and H but this is good! It took me along time to finally be able to vacuum without muffs and not that long ago in time.. I gave them up... But bought a new vacuum as well.. it's still noisy though but better.. And about the message on your phone.. Long ago there was a person talking on a cell phone and she went 2 rooms away though there was no closed door inbetween us.. But I heard what the other person on her cell phone was talking about and when I told her she just looked at me and said really??? You heard all that.. I did.. Like that person was there with me in the room.... hyperacusis is really good super duper hearing not the other way around for sure.. Plastic bags ect sounded like the crackling of a rageing fire at one time.. It got so bad for me at one time I had to take to my room and eventually did pink noise therapy starting off from there.. Then acupuncture took supplements changed my diet.. just whatever it took to try to get well.. I remember standing on the scale one time and I registered a flat 90 pounds I was so sick.. Probably dipped in the 80's as well.. I know how bad it can get.. I can identify with you and other's with hyperacusis or tinnitus or myoclonus ect... as I expirenced it myself.. Still I have left over things as my ears didn't get completely well but this is good! Plus.. About hyperacusis from a head injury... You probably allready read this but for others who haven't.... It's on Marsha's site..... But I had alot of thoses symptoms as well.. Distortion, muffing, sensitivity to high pitched sounds, feeling plugged up, my pain was only in my ears or head though like a sound caused headache.. I had/have crackling and popping, fluid pressure ect.... You know how it goes and I'm just glad the worst is behind me.. I just have a few left over things now.. but...
Marsha Johnson on Head Injury...
Onset of the primary symptom of hyperacusis was described as a period of time following the head injury from immediate to a period of months. Eighty percent of the patients describe changes in hearing following the injury including distortion, muffling, sensitivity to high pitched sounds, a feeling of numbness or loss of sensation, feeling plugged up, or feeling referred pain in adjoining anatomical areas. Patients also complained of ear tenderness, excessive crackling or popping sounds, a sensation of uncomfortable awareness of the area, and a feeling of fluid or pressure in the ear.
Take Care My Dear Friend and (((( Hugs To You )))) Life in hyperacusis land is not fun! But now I have to find a fun design too.. Lets see what Russ has got here.. Isn't it nice of him to bring the awareness of hyperacusis to his site.. It can go with so many conditions as well being a symptom and all.... Anyone could come down with it as well... <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/garfield.gif" alt="" /> Even garfield.. poor cat.. But Taz is a fighter maybe he would do well.. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/taz.gif" alt="" /> But of course the warning is there for anyone who may do this..<img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/playdrums.gif" alt="" /> or this...<img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/guitarrock.gif" alt="" />
Now wasen't that fun.. Take Care My Friend <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/sidehug.gif" alt="" />

Hello buttercupdaisies! Welcome to this website! A very nice man, Russ, has allowed us to post here and inform other people with this 'hyperacusis and tinnitus' to know they are not alone. FOR SURE, INDEED! I look forward to reading what your 'experience' with H & T has been. (ie) For how long have you had it? What symptoms are most uncomfortable for you? How do you deal with that? What do you think caused your H & T? , etc, etc. Thank you buttercupdaisies! Take care and welcome aboard, comrade'. Abishag <>< Blessings in our LORD to you !

It is wonderful to have a site for Hyperacusis – thank you Russ. Over the years and reading of so many experiences of those diagnosed with Hyperacusis – it has become clear to me that the suffering can vary greatly. Where some enjoy listening to soft music to heal themselves – others experience fierce pain and nausea with the very same soft music. On top of that, as it is so – ‘odd’ - - for many GPs and even some ear specialists – it took my GP more than 2 years to comprehend that Hyperacusis is not experienced with ‘loud’ sounds – but the fact that your ability to hear is stuck on HIGH volume. Therefore at times, some can practically hear a mouse snore I have been fortunate to have worked with 3 different specialists, in 3 different countries. It was interesting to experience the differing approaches to this concern. In their turn, each method has worked well for me. I am certainly not cured – but I wouldn’t being doing as fantastically well as I am, if I had followed the one strict ‘book’ of Hyperacusis guidelines. Instead, I and others - have followed a slightly different path which has worked excessively well. With unbelievable joy I would immediately give away this Hyperacusis if it was even remotely possible. It has changed my life radically – for suddenly I felt as if I was standing upside down in the middle of a screaming freeway, and wobbling in the process. The years of adjustment were not easy and I still on occasion, I find myself frustrated or crash from too much sound exposure. But when I look back, and then realize how well I have progressed, I pick myself up and again smile at the world. It is unfortunate that at present there is no cure for Hyperacusis – however, I look forward to the future when there will be one. This will be totally due to those specialists such as Marsha Johnson and the like, who are not afraid to reach out past those boundaries of what some think is ‘ the only way’ ( even so there is no cure). For these specialists such as Marsha, bother to create new patterns and are not afraid to stretch boundaries and look for more. It is because of specialists such as this, that I have done so well. May we encourage them to continue with their commitment. I can not express my appreciation enough.

Hello Liam, Welcome! May I ask, how you came about to get H&T? Being around loud noises? injury? etc ??? Also, YES! I totally agree that what we have is best described as "Hyperacusis... our ability to hear is stuck on high volume". You posted above, "....I and others have followed a slightly different path which has worked excessively well." What 'path' is that, if you please? Regarding, "...some can practically hear a mouse snore." When my husband and I are playing Scrabble, and our kitty cat is 15 feet away (?), I do hear her snoring. He needs to walk quietly over by her side to hear this snoring. AMAZING! Many thanks and blessings be upon Russ for addressing this "affliction". Sincerely, Abishag <><

Hello Abishag: The specialists think that a 4.5 year overdose of Thyroid med produced my severe H & T – but they cannot prove this. Sometimes I am certain it is – but if the specialists cannot say 100% “yes”.... then how can I. I used Jonathan Hazell’s direction to me with his saying that those with Hyperacusis have their volume set on HIGH. My “ slightly different path” I know has been followed by two that live in my city and quite a few that I have met on the net and also some I met in person at a clinic. I was instructed – under supervision – to wear personally moulded ear plugs (silicone with miniscule hollow tubing in the left plug as this was the worst for my H) and I wore them steadily for more than 6 months. I more or less treated them as a brace – i.e. I wear a brace to heal a sprained finger - and when I take it off, I will find that the muscles have atrophied but I will quickly get all normalcy back. I started taking the plugs out little by little. Baby steps – taking a long long time, but it worked for my ears needed to heal, before I started ‘exercising’ them again. At diagnoses, my H was so bad that with the softest 3 notes of music I would be instantly in pain and nausea – showers left my ears screeching full tilt together with severe pain and headaches – paper folding was received by me as bombs being dropped next to me – and so on. As many others, I couldn’t live in this world. In truth, there are still many things I cannot do for lengths of time, but at least now I can participate - as long as I remain aware that I do have limitations. However, it has taken me 8 hard years to get to this point. And as you must well know – it is hard work – and sometimes the hardest is to be positive. The other is that I followed my specialist’s instruction to cut out all preservatives, additives, colour-atives and so on. At first this was very frustrating in having to read up on everything – but it was so worth it. Soon I found that when I had gone without – or had been eating much less re these any of these no nos - and I suddenly ate a product which contained them – I would have instant headaches, or I would not feel well, or my ears would again start screeching. Or rather, the screeching would become noticeably louder. To cope and survive, I have learnt to “ Count my Sound Calories” - … as one would count their food calories. Unfortunately my just walking away once I have crossed that red line of too much sound, never rids the problem – for it takes me a minimum of 3 days to again feel well. And if I overdosed in my favourite music it would take me at least 4-5 days for the nausea and all else to disappear. So I try to be careful – and I try to balance out my daily sound intake – all sound, loud or soft. Thus – after 8 years - I can now attend shopping malls and movies but for a movie I must negate as much sound as possible for 1 day before and after the event – definitely eat properly. I am NOT good at this and definitely do eat stuff I shouldn’t even so I know well that I will pay for it - - - AND, I wear my personally moulded silicon ear plugs to a movie. Unfortunately on reading info re Hyperacusis, I have found many nay saying European specialist methods which include these special ear plugs and foods to eat. And this I find so odd, as following this advice is what gave me and many others a good portion of our lives back. That is why I firmly support those such as Marsha Johnson for she is not stuck in the mud - and realizing that there is no cure - and so many variances in suffering - that she constantly reaches out to explore with an open mind - putting pieces and parts into her data jigsaw of possibilities.

Thank you, kindly, Liam! Forgive me for not replying sooner. I have not felt up to being on this computer much lately. The H & T certainly doesn't help matters. Thank you so much for shareing how you came to have this Hyperacusis. It's wonderful that you seem to be adjusting quite well with how to 'go on living' a life with meaning, in spite of this "affliction". God bless you! You are a very kind person and are helping others with your 'encouraging words', dear Liam. Thank you! Take care. And keep those personally moulded earplugs close by. We live in a VERY NOISE POLLUTED WORLD! I'm sure you would agree on that one! Take care and may our Lord bless you, Liam. Abishag

Hello there, dear Buttercupdaisies! I hope and pray you are feeling much better, precious one! I am 'walking in your shoes' , so I certainly can relate to your life adjustments. It's not much fun, but we press on, in Jesus Name. He will help us. He does not always 'take away the problems of life, but He is always with us to carry us through.' Take care, dear one. When you feel up to it, maybe you can share with other folks on this network website, the how, why, when, and method(s) you use to help cope. God bless and take care. Jesus loves you! Abishag <><

I had a Dr. who had me on twice the dosage I'm on now for my thyroid for a while. Then he called me manic.... (I quit going to him for my thyroid - he was my military Dr so had to treat other junk....). He had me on toxic dosages! I sure got skinny and had lots of energy, though!

Sorry...I read backwards. (Literally go through magazines from the back page - am not dyslexic but for some reason want to do that). I am scanning and just noticed Lynn saying her hearing seemed "hyperacute" (my words). My husband and I have hearing loss in opposite ranges and he can't stand how loud I have the tv... Interesting. You were suggesting on the shout box since he's a musician it might be something to check out. (Still reading up on it).

Hi Jeanie, I am trying to find Lynn. She'll show up in a little while. She has both of the girls at this time, her hands are full. Are you sure you have 'Hyperacusis'? I'm confused, as hyperacute is not related to the sound of LDL's in Hyperacusis. I have read where some people with TMJ have hearing problems. But I'm not sure if it's the real 'HYPERACUSIS' If you will go to the very beginning of this 'Hyperacusis' thread you will find the correct definition of Hyperacusis typed by Russ. Does that fit your description, friend? Do you also have tinnitus? That is almost always another side effect of Hyperacusis (almost). I do know that Lynn told me earlier, she was disconnected from this site while answering a question posted by you. So she will be back soon. In the mean time, it is my understanding that the ipod is a device you put inside of your ears to listen to music, etc.???? Is that correct? With my Hyperacusis I'd never, I mean NEVER be able to handle anything with music, sounds, instruments, bells, drums, etc. directly in my ears. Oh HORRORS!, For this girl. What do you mean you and your husband are opposites as he thinks you have the T.V. too loud. THAT IS JUST THE REVERSE in my home. Music, T.V., radios, etc. are all too loud for me, without earplugs, or the Zem headset. You may know, hyperacusis can be caused by medicines, loud sounds, head surgeries (as is my case), etc. etc. What brought on your 'sound intolerance'? Thank you. I hope you are doing well,Jeanie. Blessings, Abishag <><

Abishag, Lynn brought it up - forgot why. I don't know much about it. My husband is the one she thought could cause he is a musician. Its weird, though. What he likes loud I don't and vice versa. We both have hearing loss on opposite spectrums. (Have foggy thinking today so words arent' coming to me..). He wanted me to listen to something loud from his studio and it gave me a headache. Sometimes I am very sensitive to sound. But I have hearing loss which makes me need tv louder. He, too, though is what they call..forgot. He is, basically, hypersensitive to light and a lot of things. He is a professional guitar player - has been for decades - and it can be loud no matter what kind of music it is. Plus he is over "sound" (amplification) for the army band here. Not sure what got the vein going, but she suggested it. And I just put 2 and 2 together about the other possible relationships. I have TMJ and hearing issues, too. And sometimes do like my IPOD (yes - little speakers in your ears) too loud. Gives me energy... You're very sweet....thank you for your concern and well wishes. Same to you : )

Hi Jeanie, I just heard from Lynn. She is giving this attention. Maybe on that sidebar thing. I don't read that. I go straight to the 'posting' sight. Oh, so Lynn thinks your husband may have Hyperacsis? Once again, friend, did you go to the beginning of this Hyperacusis Thread and read what Russ typed as the definition of HYPERACUSIS? I would do that , firstly. Also if you are in that column 'shout box' (ouch! that even hurts my ears to hear that word), in the top you will see the word 'search' with a blank. Maybe type in TMJ. I did, and found over 100 things about folks that have TMJ. Take care, Jeanie. I sincerely hope if your husband suspects "HYPERACUSIS" (for him) that he wear earplugs to block out that LOUD NOISE! Our ears are so very very sensitive. This world is NOISE POLLUTED, indeed! You are most kind, Jeanie. Blessings, Abishag <><

Hi Jeanie, ((( Smiles ))) Glad to see you... I found a good site on hyperacusis it explains alot.. Plus... It also has the hyperacusis and TMJ connection.. on this link.. http://www.hyperacusis-tinnitus.com/hyperacusis-tmj.html Plus on this one.. Hyperacusis cures, hyperacusis defined, hearing information, ear ringing, hyperacusis symptoms and hyperacusis & tinnitus, natural hyperacusis treatments, Permanent hyperacusis, Temporaray hyperacusis, treatments for and hyperacusis links.. http://www.hyperacusis-tinnitus.com/I need to read your post more but it's true that with musicians.. There is more of a risk of hyperacusis as I've seen alot of musicians come to the hyperacusis network over the years.. And it's usually a sad sad story when it happens.. Your husband complains when you turn up the TV too loud?? Interesting as lots of people with H mild or severe complain about the TV too.. And some believe that the causes of hyperacusis are physical. They might be damage to the inner ear—especially to the cochlea, or to nerves going from ear to brain or to small muscles that protect the ear from blaring noises. Sometimes, but rarely, there may be a brainstem disorder responsible for the condition. Others believe the mechanism responsible for hyperacusis is the complex processing of the information as it goes from the ear to the brain. In other words, it starts in the ear as a normal sound, but is amplified through processes in the brain until it is perceived as an earsplitting noise. For people who have hyperacusis, TMJ could be just another problem. TMJ might, in fact, be one of the reasons for hyperacusis. It is becoming more well-known as more is learned about it. Understanding TMJ is important to those who suffer from it and from hyperacusis. It's a great site to read through... But I got a real good one too on musicians and hyperacusis.. It's a high risk job and people have been known to come down with hearing loss, tinnitus and even worst.. as hyperacusis can make one wish they were deaf... And just seeing the decible charts on instruments.. Is a mind blower as it can get quite loud.. It's not natural in nature for ones ears to deal with amplified sounds like that.. I've read stories of Ipod users and concert goers who are stunned when they come down with H.. Weither mild to profound... It's kind of scarry not fun at all.. Hopefull it's more temporary then permanent H.. Therapy can take up to 18 months to 2 years and more for some.. With permanent H.. And some people don't get better though most can show some improvements overtime like 90 percent can... I've got all the figures on that... I'll post it here sometime... Be back later with the musician links.. Take Care Jeanie Lynn

Hi Abishag, ((( Smiles ))) It's nice to know your here at times I can't be as.. It's summer time and so I'm on and off... Round and about... Thanks.. ((( Smiles ))) I haven't used the shout box search system much at all yet.. I like that Shout! Ouch! With H that is so true.... Shouts use to really hurt my ears alot at one time.. Don't like them so much now either but it's not as bad as before.. My tolerances are real hi now.. Hi Jeanie, ((( Smiles ))) In the protection of or in just the prevention of H.. Loud noise trauma is so real.... Expecially for musicians and contractors and ect... I was reading this... The human ear can withstand 85 decibels of sound, about the volume of a factory, for eight hours at a time. By contrast, 100 decibels, or about the sound of a subway car, can start to damage the ear after only 15 minutes.. Ouch! But in the hearing industry... Hearing protection for musicians Perhaps even more damaging than hearing loss are the secondary effects that often accompany it or occur in isolation: tinnitus, diplacusis, and hyperacusis. Most professionals involved in hearing care are familiar with tinnitus, the perception of noise (ringing, etc) in the ears. However, fewer of us may routinely recognize diplacusis, a pathological matching of frequency and pitch that ultimately results in some notes sounding flat; due to this, diplacusis can be career-threatening to those in the music industry. Hyperacusis, a reduced tolerance of suprathreshold sound, is also career-threatening to those in the music industry. In the hyperacousic ear, sounds that are easily tolerated by most people (eg, laughter, a telephone ring, or live music) are uncomfortable or intolerable. http://www.hearingreview.com/issues/articles/2006-03_06.aspYes hyperacusis can be from very mild to severe to profound.. It can get really bad... There are no known cures for noise-induced hearing loss (NIHL), tinnitus, diplacusis, or hyperacusis; early identification of auditory dysfunction and prevention of cochlear damage is the only viable treatment at this time. ------------------------------ No cure but treatment in the way of... A desensitization program..... That works in some way for most... But not the cure... Prevent is worth more then the cure yet.... Some people come down with H and they don't know why?? And some people come down with H and they are not around thoses kinds of loud noises.. And of course there are other ways to get come down with this condition as well.. As well as the unknown... Thank You Abishag... ((( Smiles ))) Nice to see you Jeanie... ((( Smiles ))) Take Care Lynn

Hello to those of us with Hyperacusis/Tinnitus. I have just received my edition of "The Hyperacusis Network, LLC Summer 2008" Newsletter by Editor: Dan Malcore. On the front page of this Newsletter Dan recommends a wonderful book, "The Consumer Handbook on Tinnitus" compiled by Richard S. Tyler, PhD. Dan goes on to say it is 'temporarily sold out at Amazon.com' , which I did indeed try, and found it is still 'sold out!'. However, I have located the same book at 'Harris Comminications' email:www.harriscomm.com for the price of $32.95 plus shipping. With S & H I ordered this book for $39.95. I phoned in my order to: 1-800-825-6758 Dan is most kind. He informs us that "in the mean time if you would like to read some excerpts from each chapter you can find them online at: < http://www.hearingproblems.com/index_book5.htm> It's either Chapter 13 or 14 that explains one woman's story of Hyperacusis. I quote Dan, "Chapter 13, book compiled by Richard S. Tyler, PhD. (Chapter 13, written by David M. Baguley), is devoted entirely to hyperacusis and is a must read for anyone who has hyperacusis." The messaage board for Hyperacusi Network, LLC , is now located:< www.websitetoolbox.com/mb/danmalcore> "Yesterday is ashes, tomorrow wood. Only today does the fire burn brightly.' With sincere thanks to Russ for allowing us to post on this Hyperacusis/Tinnitus site. God bless you all, Abishag
