Fringe autism treatment could get federal study

The treatment removes heavy metals from the body and is based on the fringe theory that mercury in vaccines triggers autism — a theory never proved and rejected by mainstream science. Mercury hasn't been in childhood vaccines since 2001, except for certain flu shots.

But many parents of autistic children are believers, and the head of the National Institute of Mental Health supports testing it on children provided the tests are safe.

"So many moms have said, `It's saved my kids,'" institute director Dr. Thomas Insel said.

The process, called chelation, is used to treat lead poisoning. Studies of adults have shown it to be ineffective unless there are high levels of metals in the blood. Any study in children would have to exclude those with high levels of lead or mercury, which would require treatment and preclude using a placebo.

One of the drugs used for chelation, DMSA, can cause side effects including rashes and low white blood cell count. And there is evidence chelation may redistribute metals in the body, perhaps even into the central nervous system.

"I don't really know why we have to do this in helpless children," said Ellen Silbergeld of Johns Hopkins University's Bloomberg School of Public Health, who was invited to comment on the study to a review board of the national institute.

Despite lawsuits and at least one child's death, several thousand autistic children are already believed to be using chelation (pronounced kee-LAY'-shun), their parents not content to wait for a study.

Autism is a spectrum of disorders that hamper a person's ability to communicate and interact with others. Most doctors believe there is no cure.

Actress Jenny McCarthy, whose bestseller "Louder Than Words" details her search for treatments for her autistic son, Evan, told thousands of parents at a recent autism conference outside Chicago that she plans to try chelation on him this summer.

Lie #1

Not true. There is hard evidence that mercury causes autism. Some of the most respected scientists have openly accepted that mercury is responsible for autism.

Lie #2
Studies of adults have shown it to be ineffective unless there are high levels of metals in the blood.

Chelation (in this context) if for the purpose of metals in the blood. This statement is ridiculous and deceptive.

Lie #3

It's not the DMSA that causes the rashes and low WBC, it's the mercury being mobilized, which is what chelation is supposed to do. This is another ridiculous and deceptive statement.

Mercury hasn't been in childhood vaccines since 2001, except for certain flu shots.

Mercury remains in some shots as an effect of processing. This is well-known.

AVN has also reported that some independent tests have shown that mercury still remains in distributed vaccines even though it has been reported to have been taken out. They are calling for public testing to be conducted on distributed vials.

GROUNDBREAKING RESEARCH PROVIDES EVEN MORE SCIENCE SUPPORTING THE THEORY THAT VACCINES CAN AND DO CAUSE AUTISM

Nixa, MO – A primate model for autism using the U.S. children’s immunization schedule was unveiled at the International Meeting For Autism Research (IMFAR) this weekend. The research underscores the critical need for studies into vaccine safety and the immune and mitochondrial dysfunction of autistic children. The National Autism Association (NAA) questions why the government hasn’t undertaken these vital studies and why researchers have had to depend on private money to perform this critical science that will surely impact the health of millions of children worldwide.

Using infant macaque monkeys, University of Pittsburgh’s Dr. Laura Hewitson, Ph.D., described how vaccinated animals, when compared to unvaccinated animals, showed significant neurodevelopmental deficits and “significant associations between specific aberrant social and non-social behaviors, isotope binding, and vaccine exposure.”

Researchers also reported, "vaccinated animals exhibited progressively severe chronic active inflammation whereas unexposed animals did not” and found “many significant differences in the GI tissue gene expression profiles between vaccinated and unvaccinated animals." Gastrointestinal issues are a common symptom of children with regressive autism.

NAA calls for the NIH to conduct large scale, non-epidemiological studies into the biomedical symptoms surrounding young children and all vaccines, including those containing the mercury-based preservative thimerosal and other additives like aluminum.

This request for further research echoes that of Dr. Bernadine Healy, Former NIH Director in a CBS interview earlier this week. "I think public health officials have been too quick to dismiss the hypothesis as 'irrational,' without sufficient studies of causation. . . without studying the population that got sick," Healy said. "I have not seen major studies that focus on 300 kids who got autistic symptoms within a period of a few weeks of the vaccines."

Recently the government’s vaccine court conceded the case of Hannah Poling, admitting that vaccines triggered her regression into autism by exacerbating mitochondrial dysfunction. “The recent Poling case and this new research provide further evidence that the CDC has fallen down on their job to protect children from harm. The biomedical research to date suggests that parental reports of regression following vaccination is not only plausible, but likely in certain individuals,” said Scott Bono, NAA Chairman. "To date, the CDC has conducted no safety testing on the possible harmful effects of simultaneously administering multiple vaccines to infants, and has steadfastly refused to state a preference for mercury-free vaccines to be given to children and pregnant women. It's time for HHS and Congress to step in and take vaccine safety away from the CDC."

• Autism is an epidemic in this country. There is no such thing as a genetic epidemic. One in 166 children goes on to be diagnosed with autism, including children in our own District. It is a lifelong affliction for the vast majority with many requiring constant care. However, some with autism are recovering with biomedical treatments.
We need to study the biomedical treatments that are working and develop other treatments to help.

• The Combating Autism Act (S. 843) authorizes over $900 million for autism research and services, and would for the first time coordinate Federal efforts into autism research. It also provides the critical oversight needed to make sure NIH and other agencies help the most children in the fastest way possible.

• We are asking for a very public commitment to move the Senate bill (S.843) in November. While we appreciate the need to move the larger NIH Reform bill, autism deserves special attention not expressed in that bill.

• The CAA specifically addresses the link of autism to environmental factors (including vaccines and preservatives) that parents have wanted for so long. For the first time, we have the opportunity to get government dollars directed at this previously neglected area.
We won’t rest until we get the help and research our children need and deserve.

• If there is ever a time for politicians and advocacy groups to dictate autism research it is now since autism has not gotten the attention it deserves at NIH.

Autism is an out-of-control epidemic in the U.S. and many other countries. Just fifteen years ago, autism was an extremely rare disorder, diagnosed in 1 of 10,000 children. Today, 1 in 166 children are afflicted, with boys 4 times more likely to develop autism than girls.
Autism is not solely caused by an incurable genetic defect, it must have a biological or environmental cause (and therefore a cure).

A mercury laced preservative once widely added to pediatric vaccines exposes infants brains to twice
the neurotoxins as previously suspected,
offering evidence health guidelines may underestimate the risk newborns face,
researchers say in a report published Thursday.

The additive, thimersal, has been used in vaccines since the 1930s and is almost 50 percent mercury by weight.
Since 2001, manafactures gradually have phased it from almost all domestic pediatric vaccines,
though it remains in use overseas in cheaper " multidose " vaccines.

The study , publised in Environmental Health Perspectives, a peer review publication of the National Institutes of Health ,
also chides health officials for abandoning an earlier recommendation that the preservative be completely phased out and further studies conducted.

And it fuels the debate concerning the Federal Governments Aggresive Vaccination Plan that subjects infants
to a battery of shots- some which contain aluminum and other potentially harmfull compounds- in their first
weeks of life.

"We're talking about a lowlevel delievery of a toxin given to a baby on the first day of its life,
" said mercury expert Bob Haley, chairman of the chemistry department at the University of Kentucky but
not involved in the study.

" what is needed is a total study of the sensibility of the vaccine program.
Why would you want to vaccinate a baby on the first day of it's life ?

The report is one of the first to look beyond mercury blood levels resulting from the vaccines.
Instead it examines both the amount and type of mercury reaching the brain.
It suggests health officals examined the wrong compound and failed to look far enough when assessing the danger of mercury in thimerosal.

This is largly a past concern for the United States, given the
predominance today of thimersol- free vaccines. Both the studys lead author and the Center For Disease Control and Prevention on Wednesday
urged parents to have their children vaccinated.

" Thats the first message", said Thomas Burbacher, lead author and associate professor in the Department Of Environmental and
Occpational Health Sciences at the University Of Washington's School of Public Health.

" The bottom line is that trying to assess the effects of a compound with very little or no data is not a good thing to do.
..... Unfortunately, we started doing studies on this compound way to late. Basic information like this should've been been available decades ago. "

However, the problem is very much alive for developing nations, where the additive is common.
The World Health Organization has expressed interest in Burbacher's research.

The problem, Burbacher said, is the regulators trying to assess thimersal harm used as a benchmark methylmercury a widely studied compound
rather then the little- known ethylmercury in thimerosal.

Both compounds cross the blood- brain barrier. But methylmercury breaks down slowly, whereas ethlmercury dissapates fairly rapidly,
suggesting to regulators that a standard based methlmercury would adequately protect infants....
