Hi everyone - hope all is well. I haven't been around much lately.

Yes I know it sounds strange. I went for a one hour bike ride today and realised that my back teeth were sore after cycling up a few hills. I realised this has been the case for a very long time and I also realised that the pain was only in the large back teeth - i.e. the amalgam containing teeth. Does anyone else have this problem? I can't remember not ever having it. It almost feels like the teeth are rotting - I know that doesn't make sense but it is the best way to describe the ache.

Also if I have a nap during the day I often get this same ache but I never get the ache after a normal nights sleep or in ANY other circumstance except strenuous exercise or naps during the day. 90% of the time I feel much worse after napping during the day so it's something I try and avoid. As for the exercise today, afterwards I felt slightly dizzy for about a minute after stopping but not too bad.

So does anyone else have this odd symptom and would it be mercury related?

Have you had all your alalgams replaced? Is the pain only in the bottom teeth or in the upper teeth as well? Are you taking in plenty of calcium, magnesium, and vitamin c?

Perhaps it could be caused by one of several things. Anything from insufficient calcium, magnesium, or vitamin c, or perhaps there might be decay in those teeth? I guess you still have the amalgams. Decay can sometimes occur beneath old mecury fillings if there is border separation. Quite often if there is dacay beneath a large mercury filling it can't even be seen on an Xray. I had 25 mercury fillings replaced. Some had decay beneath them. Are you planning to have these large fillings in the rear teeth replaced with porcelain inlays, onlays, or crowns? They are more expensive than composite fillings but are much more suitable for large fillings in rear teeth and would probably last much longer. Inlays or onlays are less destructive to the tooth than a crown, but can only be used if enough of the tooth is present.I hope you have those teeth repaired soon, as it if there is decay there it would not be a good idea to let it progress until you need a root canal(I had one of those. It wasn't fun).

I don't want to panic you, but it should be taken care of ASAP. It might just be a reaction to the mercury though, but why take a chance that it isn't? I had plenty of weird pains in my teeth for years and the dentist kept telling me they were okay. When they were replaced years later there was decay beneath some of them.

How old are these fillings? The older they are the more likely that there might be dacay under them. Most of my mercury fillings were over 20 years old.

Thanks for your reposnse. I think maybe you are right - maybe it is decay underneath. I had my first fillings placed when I was six and I'm 29 now. I don't know at what age you get adult teeth but I'm pretty sure it wouldn't have been too long since the adult teeth were filled as well. We had free dentists come around to our schools every year and they seem pretty gung ho about filling teeth! They would all be at least 10 years old. I have not bee to a dentist in over 10 years!

I will be starting to get my fillings replaced at some point in the next few months. I'm not sure what the replacement material will be. I was hoping to get serum testing but it is apparently not available in Australia. The dentist I'm going to see does not believe in root canals. My teeth are most likely in pretty bad shape. I just find it odd that they ache after excercise and napping and never at any other time!!??

Please don't wait a few months to get started, especially with the tooth that is bothering you. A root canal is a very painful and expensive process. If you wait too long you might need one. I made that mistake once, and hopefully I will never make it again.

I did have tooth soreness after exercise before I had my amalgams replaced. I don't know if it was due to decay underneath but my fillings were old and leaky. There was definitely decay underneath! Since replacing all my amalgams with composites and Cerec 3-D onlays/crown
I don't experience the soreness after exercising anymore.

Thanks for your reply angelbaby. It's good to know that your pain went away after removal. The pain doesn't bother me I just find the whole thing kind of odd

I have been thinking about it. It might be caused by an infection of the gums. Have you been rinsing your moth with very warm salt water? In any case, Imo you should have your amalgams replaced as soon as possible.

Here's my 2 cents...

My teeth and jaws used to ache every morning that I woke up before my amalgams were removed. I discovered that I was griting my teeth throughout the night leaving my jaw muscles achy and my teeth hurting.

This may not apply to your situation, but I though I'd mention it.

If this is the case, heavy magnesium supplementation can help.

Thank you JK98 and Russ,
I hope I don't have a gum infection - that sounds like a major problem. However from what Angelbaby says her pain went away with removal so it may be the amalgam.

I definately do grind my teeth every night and have done so for many many years. I do take some magnesium, perhaps I could up it but in any case I feel a few steps closer to having the amalgams removed, only a matter of time!!

Quite often a gum infection can be treated just by rinsing the mouth with very warm(as hot as you can comfortably tolerate) salt water(perhaps a teaspoon or two of salt in a cup of water) several times a day. I have had a few gum infections I treated this way. If the warm salt water doesn't work, then you can alternate rinsing your mouth with hydrogen peroxide and salt water. Just be very careful not to swallow the peroxide.

Do you use a waterpick? Pehaps there might be food caught in the gums there. Sometimes there is a small bit of food so deeply lodged that flossing and brushing won't remove it, but a waterpick might remove it. Have you had a dental cleaning recently?

3% or lower concentration hydrogen peroxide.
