Hi folks- we just lost our 8 year old Brown chocolate lab (Buster)-- an extreemly healthy dog who had many years ahead of him. He was hit by a car this past Thursday night. We were so heartbroken, that the cold I was getting over came back full force because of the emotional pain, this caused.
We learned the hard way that even if your dog is super trained and very obedient, dont trust them to stay off the road if there is a distraction enticing them. Buster never crossed the road in front of our house, and always relieved himself in the fields at the side of the house. This time, a rabbit or something provoked him, and he had to chase after it.
We had virtually no stars or moon out that night- it was completely clouded over, so the driver couldnt see him, and felt sick when he saw he hit him.
Dont' trust your super obedient animals not to get distracted, and be in the wrong place at the wrong time-- We now know for the future- to always have them on a long leash when they go outside- even if it is in the Country.
