Serious question for Linear or Linda...

.. if at all possible, imagine yourself as a black teenager in a science class in high school, today, learning Darwin's theory of evolution. To complicate that, imagine being a science major in college and studying Darwin's theory of evolution and hearing your college professor laud Darwin's genius and go through the motions of making his writings appear as valid science, making it appear that the scientific community as a whole also validates that science.

Then imagine going home with the Darwin's Descent of Man tucked neatly under your arm, settling down at your desk and reading about the intellectual inferiority of blacks, their savage behavior and infantile demeanors and less than doglike capacity to solve problems.

Do you think it would be very uplifting and inspiring? Or would you rather feel more like burning down the schoolhouse and hurting some white people?

In chains these people were beaten and abused for generations. And now you use your 'science' to keep them chained and strip them of their dignity in the public schools and you expect approval for your veiled efforts of racial hatred.

Raise your own child with books and ideas that tell her she is as dumb as a dog and see what kind of product you get. Tell yourself and all the neighbors she is as dumb as a dog, maybe that will help you and the rest of the world treat her better too.

These excerpts are from Civic Biology, first published in 1914 and an example of a very popular high school textbook nationwide in America at that time, based on Charles Darwin's interpretation of biology science, among others.

Excerpts from the book give its general tone and approach:

Evolution of Man. -- Undoubtedly there once lived upon the earth races of men who were much lower in their mental organization than the present inhabitants. If we follow the early history of man upon the earth, we find that at first he must have been little better than one of the lower animals. He was a nomad, wandering from place to place, feeding upon whatever living things he could kill with his hands. Gradually he must have learned to use weapons, and thus kill his prey, first using rough stone implements for this purpose. As man became more civilized, implements of bronze and of iron were used. About this time the subjugation and domestication of animals began to take place. Man then began to cultivate the fields, and to have a fixed place of abode other than a cave. The beginnings of civilization were long ago, but even to-day the earth is not entirely civilized.

The Races of Man. -- At the present time there exist upon the earth five races or varieties of man, each very different from the other in instincts, social customs, and, to an extent, in structure. These are the Ethiopian or negro type, originating in Africa; the Malay or brown race, from the islands of the Pacific; The American Indian; the Mongolian or yellow race, including the natives of China, Japan, and the Eskimos; and finally, the highest type of all, the caucasians, represented by the civilized white inhabitants of Europe and America. ...

Improvement of Man. -- If the stock of domesticated animals can be improved, it is not unfair to ask if the health and vigor of the future generations of men and women on the earth might not be improved by applying to them the laws of selection. This improvement of the future race has a number of factors in which we as individuals may play a part. These are personal hygiene, selection of healthy mates, and the betterment of the environment.

Eugenics. -- When people marry there are certain things that the individual as well as the race should demand. The most important of these is freedom from germ diseases which might be handed down to the offspring. Tuberculosis, syphilis, that dread disease which cripples and kills hundreds of thousands of innocent children, epilepsy, and feeble-mindedness are handicaps which it is not only unfair but criminal to hand down to posterity. The science of being well born is called eugenics. ...

Parasitism and its Cost to Society. -- Hundreds of families such as those described above exist today, spreading disease, immorality, and crime to all parts of this country. The cost to society of such families is very severe. Just as certain animals or plants become parasitic on other plants or animals, these families have become parasitic on society. They not only do harm to others by corrupting, stealing, or spreading disease, but they are actually protected and cared for by the state out of public money. Largely for them the poorhouse and the asylum exist. They take from society, but they give nothing in return. They are true parasites.

The Remedy. -- If such people were lower animals, we would probably kill them off to prevent them from spreading. Humanity will not allow this, but we do have the remedy of separating the sexes in asylums or other places and in various ways preventing intermarriage and the possibilities of perpetuating such a low and degenerate race. Remedies of this sort have been tried successfully in Europe and are now meeting with some success in this country.

This textbook was toned down in 1926. It's interesting to note that after the Civil War, for a few years an organization called the KKK roamed the countryside in areas killing and harrassing newly freed slaves and then disappeared into obscurity until the 1920's, after a generation of children were taught from the Civic Biology textbook. Directly connecting the reappearance of the KKK with the teaching of white racial superiority, eugenics, and remedies toward the 'parasites' of society to teenagers in high school would be impossible but the coincidence can't be overlooked either. Interestingly and coincidentally enough again, the KKK mostly disappeared after the 1920's, with this edition of that textbook, but still exists somewhat in places.

You can actually find copies of Civic Biology, the 1914 edition, on the net to download and judge for yourself. Several pages are dedicated to the ideas of eugenics, just a couple sentences above.

Darwin's cousin, Frances Galton, was a big proponent of eugenics. Galton's ideas included instituting a caste system to create 'a highly-bred human race'. He he demonstrated how simply dividing persons into two castes, A and B (A selected for “natural gifts” and B being “the refuse”), and adopting a policy that hastened marriages in caste A and discouraged marriages in caste B, dramatic improvement in human genetic stock could be achieved in just a few generations.

I've been reading a lot of stuff, and I haven't been able to put the Royal Navy connection together. Something's fishy here, but I can't track it down. Darwin's appointment seems to have come about by circumstances beyond any man's control, and the persons involved aren't exactly entangled with the other conspirators.

Here's a list of the relevant online bios, but since I have little to report, big deal.
Robert Grant, early Darwin mentor
more Robert Grant
Robert Fitzroy, Beagle skipper who
Quote
In February 1850 he was accordingly placed on half-pay; nor did he ever serve again, although advanced in due course by seniority to the ranks of rearand vice-admiral on the retired list (1857, 1863). In 1851 he was elected a fellow of the Royal Society,
1851 is too early to be X Club work - just looks well-connected/competent.
Adam Sedgwick, late Darwin mentor, clearly not part of conspiracy, as his response to the O-book included
Quote
"If I did not think you a good tempered and truth-loving man I should not tell you that ... I have read your book with more pain than pleasure. Parts of it I admired greatly; parts I laughed at till my sides were almost sore; other parts I read with absolute sorrow; because I think them utterly false and grievously mischievous. You have deserted - after a start in that tram-road of all solid physical truth - the true method of induction ..."
Unfortunately I see no mention of which parts threatened to hurt Sedgwick's sides. We may only guess.
John Stevens Henslow, late Darwin mentor
2nd Henslow link, author: one "Owen Spencer-Thomas" (all 3 names have a connection, could still be coincidence)
wiki on Henslow Appears innocent enough. Henslow was offered Beagle job, declined, set up another fellow who backed out, finally recommended Darwin. He seems to have been a nice gentleman. But Henslow's son-in-law was Joseph Dalton Hooker, so we can't easily rule him out of the story, if further evidence should come up.
Fanboy Darwin Bio
and another fanboy, who publishes

Within ten years of the publication of the Origin, Huxley was hailing Darwin as a high priest. In a lightning sketch on the back of a letter, he once depicted Darwin as a new Pope, archbishop of the `church scientific,’ being venerated by a visiting
naturalist. At the same time many radicals saw Darwin as the antithesis of religion. A New York cartoon portrayed him as the `sun of the nineteenth century’ beaming on a benighted humanity, banishing clouds of bishops, Bibles and priestly hobgoblins.
The well's proven dry, but I'm not ready to give up just yet. I don't think the Royal Navy had quite enough boats to provide cushy jobs for all young men. It still looks to me like the young evolutionists got more than their share.

I have to admit, sessions like this last one are what make history seem boring.

How exhaustively does the point have to be made here? The science validates evolution. I have given you a list of things that show the ToE to be valid. I asked you to show me how even one of those things validates racism or eugenics. You did not.

Would a teacher be making a mistake if they denied that Darwin, like most other white Europeans of his time, was racist? Yes, obviously. But a good science teacher would also say that the ToE stands on its own merits.

If it is your and CTD's conviction that evolution caused racism and suffering, show me through the science that this is so. If you cannot then I'm not sure what the point is in carryin on here about racists.

Well aside from the fact that blacks and people of color, the lower classes of any color, even the jews in another morbid extension of the same idea, have had to suffer and fight, and suffer and fight still, against an enormous amount of cruel stereoptyping which Darwin's theories supplanted in the minds of people everywhere the ideas flourished as authentic science, I guess there is no reason.
Ah! So there was no racism until Darwin came up with his theories?
Then what were those creationist inquisitors doing to the European Jews during the middle ages? Trying to convince them to convert with eloquent rhetoric?

I have looked into history also and it seems that slaves from Africa were being used long before Darwin came along. Maybe it was slavery without racism. Would you call it equal opportunity slavery? What percentage of slaves were white in America before we accepted evolution and made it a black institution only?
Quote
Why do you ask?
Because neither you nor CTD have stated your purpose for this little history lesson in the Creation Evolution discussion board. However, you continue to insinuate that evolution and evolutionists are the cause of racism like your "...Darwin's theories supplanted in the minds of people everywhere the ideas flourished as authentic science." statement above.

Quote
Frederick Douglass was actually quite popular. Until Darwin's theories and explanations for the differences between peoples began to be offically taught in the schools, many whites probably would have never conceived such horrid racist ideas themselves, much less expressed them publicly.
Here it is again. Knowledge of the Theory of Evolution causes racism. I suppose you can show that racism in the United States and England was not popular until after the publishing of Darwin's work.

Also, knowledge of the theory of evolution is more extensive now than it ever has been. Are we more racist now than before 1850? If you believe so, how would you support that belief?

Most scientists agree that the theory of evolution is the most correct explanation for the diversity of life on Earth. Do you have statistics showing a higher percentage of scientists are racist than in the general population?

A higher percentage of the general population of Europeans believe in evolution than the general population of US citizens. Do you have statistics showing a higher percentage of racism in the general population of Europeans than in the general population of US citizens?

What is it exactly that brings you to the conclusion that believing the theory of evolution causes racism?

I would be disappointed in Darwin's racism but if I were a scientist I would have to believe that Darwin could be wrong about some things and still right about others. If I lived in a society that extolled the equality of all races, I could more easily discount any racist ideas expressed by Darwin as anachronistic to this day and age. Besides, I would rather know the truth about Darwin even if it is uncomfortable.

I confess that I am unfamiliar with "Descent of Man". Could you point me to the sections of the book that make those statements of blacks' inferiority? I would like to know the bad parts of Darwin's character as well as the good.

I don't quite comprehend the connection you are trying to make to the Royal Navy. It was simply the thing to do for lots of people, go to school at the Royal Navy. Feather in the cap sort of thing like going to to West Point or something... gives people officer status. Being subjects of the crown it also showed their loyalty and desire to serve.

Well, you've simply established society connections, Darwin visa vi his grandfather's reputation and work which was being widely read (and influencing young 'evolutionists'), you could say Grant and others patronized Darwin to that effect somewhat... and others who were descended from British Royalty sailing the seas with approval of the crown for the imperial interests of the same, more or less, even if those interests were not in the forefront of their minds. had they discovered a new continent or massive mountains of gold, the queen would have been right there..

If I could truly tell you why every event in my own life happened exactly the way it did, I guess we'd all be that much further ahead. but it's not likely.

From my perspective, I see a certain social climate... the descendents of royals being inducted into the Royal Society and other various fellowships being very much the norm no matter their status otherwise, Darwin coming along carrying on the work of his grandfather just like his children would later carry on his work, and being granted society fellowship on that merit if none other. They are the monied peoples of British society, they give and take to themselves and their heirs cushy positions like professorships, etc because that's simply the way it is. No doubt there may have been a few geniuses living in the London slums who got overlooked but it simply wasn't in the cards for them due to birthright.

Just the climate. Britian was in an aggressive imperialistic stage at the time, sea travel and exploration was the thing for a young man seeking opportunity to do. Writing and selling memoirs was a way to make money. It sure beat working on the docks. Having the society connections to rightfully add an ESQ or Sir Or Duke or professor of sciences to your name simply added to the appeal of the writings and gave them staus, whether truly earned oby work or from the cradle. Idiots have been known to sit on thrones so no wonder about the royal society or even academia in that context, how someone who doesn't seem to have what it takes gets all the right opportunities. Bloodlines is all it takes most of the time. A few lucky ones work their way up here and there.

There's a pretty good piece about Huxley here:

The Huxley File - A Sort of Firm
http://aleph0.clarku.edu/huxley/guide3.html

Linear, in regard to your comments, sometimes people do things not because they feel ever so innately deeply that it is the right thing to do, but because the world around them tells them it is the right thing to do, because Mama tells them it is so, because Grandpa tells them it is so, and/or because they learn it in school and emulate the behaviors of those around them (and of course, to make money, acquire wealth), simply to fit in.

... Like continuing to teach Darwin's theory of evolution even though much of the science is invalid and the personal views egregious, as you and Linda have both pointed out.

The answer to every question you asked otherwise has already been given in previous posts either by myself or CTD.

There's a brief page on contemporary authors of the 19th century within a piece about Jack London, here, that is worth a read as well:
http://london.sonoma.edu/Essays/philosophy.html

As that page points out, Herbert Spencer drew upon Darwin's work as social Darwinism.

The writings of these, including Darwin's work, were referred to by many during that time as 'New Thought'. If you want to know what the social climate of any given place is during any time of history, you must study the history, but you should also familiarize yourself with the writers of that period who express the sentiments of the times in various ways and whose books are read by others afterward leaving their mark, for better or worse, as well.

I gave you a list a little earlier. The points on it were evidence that evolution has taken place. Ignoring it and repeating over and over that evolution is invalid does not make it so, however much you'd like it to. Like CTD, you are closing your eyes, plugging up your ears, and screaming, "I can't hear you." You also seem to be erroneously convinced that ignoring science completely and slinging mud at evolutionists is going to discredit evolution. Continuing to build this fantasy here does not make it any more true.

That is your personal assertion which would carry more weight if you could show:

1. Evidence that the science actually is invalid.

2. That the personal views of the founder(s) and early proponents of the theory have any bearing on the truth or falseness of the theory.

Martin Luther, the founder of Protestant Christianity was a very vocal anti-Semite. He even wrote an entire pamphlet entitled The Jews and Their Lies. A great many early protestants were anti-Semitic....purges and pogroms were quite common.

Sometimes people do things because they were told that they were the right things, by grandpa or their preacher .. Like continuing to teach Protestant Christianity even though some contradicts a straightforward reading of the Bible and the personal views [of the founders are] egregious[ly horrid].

I looked back and saw no answers to my questions about how many white slaves were there in the US prior to Darwin's work, if scientists are more racist than regular folk, or if Europeans were more racist than US folk. Of course I would expect some support for any answers that were provided. Maybe you could point out where those questions were answered, or just cut and paste them in your response to me. It would be a great help.

The thing that strikes me as unusual is that these people weren't joining the Royal Navy in the way other monied persons did. They didn't sign on as regular officers. They we more loosely committed, as surgeons and naturalists. Other traditional paths were available. Darwin was barely able to obtain his father's permission because of the unconventional nature of his venture to join the Beagle.

Yet we find this same (at least somewhat unconventional) path followed by Huxley & I forget which other ones.

I may drag Mark Twain in for inspection. He used to be one of my favorite authors. I collected most of his work, and this led me to the lesser-known trash he wrote in later years when he "came out" as an enemy of God. Reviewing, I found a lot of his opinions were subtly present in earlier work as well.

Spencer's on my 'to do list'. I found where he was on good terms with Carnagie and other robber barons, and I was looking into the money angles. Other things came up, and I may just skip the money & look after his doctrines - much easier to research. I found many references to his trip to America, but no specifics.

In a lightning sketch on the back of a letter, he once depicted Darwin as a new Pope, archbishop of the `church scientific,’ being venerated by a visiting naturalist. At the same time many radicals saw Darwin as the antithesis of religion.
Politicians... what can you expect?

T.H.Huxley was quite the double-talker. Even S.J.Gould says so (I may hunt for the quote later).

There's a lot to be said right there. The name Forbes in that Huxley article rings a bell.

The strongest impression I have at this point concerning Huxley, leaving his opinions out of the matter, is that he loved to surround himself with money. Other people's money and it's effects. Perhaps an awful lot of brown nosing.

I quickly skimmed that article, have not finished reading it carefully.

1. Evidence that the science actually is invalid.

Doesn't really matter in this context. I'll split with you, 50/50.

Quote
2. That the personal views of the founder(s) and early proponents of the theory have any bearing on the truth or falseness of the theory.

That would appear right on target. working on it.

Martin Luther, the founder of Protestant Christianity was a very vocal anti-Semite. He even wrote an entire pamphlet entitled The Jews and Their Lies. A great many early protestants were anti-Semitic....purges and pogroms were quite common.

Thank you so very much for that link. accolades truly. I have heard about this piece by Luther for years but have never seen it or read it. I think you are taking it a bit out of context, I only skimmed it but he isn't inciting hate against jews, looks more like complaining to me about them complaining about the christian beliefs in Jesus as the savior, Son of God.

The catholic church and the crowns had pushed the jews all over europe for hundreds of years. Killed many. Not sure the protestants ever participated in the purges... Not that I am aware of. No denying the protestants carried a lot of baggage from so many generations of roman catholic rule though.

there's a good page here about the history of the jews after the destruction of jerusalem, from England to France to Spain etc.

History of the Jews in Russia and the Soviet Union
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/History_of_the_Jews_in_Russia_and_the_Soviet_Union

Most jews settled in north eastern europe. Jesus did warn them that Jerusalem would be detroyed and they didn't believe him. It's in the bible, NT. Luther does seem to be reiterating that in the writing, more or less.

You can easily look up an estimate of how many slaves were in america, in england also. Somewhere around 1.5 million in america (mainland NA USA only) if i remember correctly, Big numbers.

your other questions are silly. figure out what to do with those up yourself.

Much of what became common when evolutionism was accepted can be found inCh.2, Descent of Man
For example,
Quote
Malthus has discussed these several checks, but he does not lay stress enough on what is probably the most important of all, namely infanticide, especially of female infants and the habit of procuring abortion. These practices now prevail in many quarters of the world; and infanticide seems formerly to have prevailed, as Mr. M'Lennan* has shewn on a still more extensive scale. These practices appear to have originated in savages recognising the difficulty, or rather the impossibility of supporting all the infants that are born.
In this single chapter, Darwin explains the benefits of infanticide/abortion eugenics/racism, and at least some forms of Social Darwinism. Not the most pleasant reading - I didn't yet do a thorough job myself.

Ironically, we now live in a much more primitive culture than he did. Ironically, but not surprisingly.

Lamarckism is touched on also. Quite the handy encapsulation.

Notice that Darwin refers to people practising infanticide as "savages." I don't see any evidence here that he is saying it is a practice that should be adopted by the "civilised."

He says it originated among the savages.

He also says it's the most important check on human population. Communist China doesn't seem to have any trouble understanding his reasoning. They're following it right down to the detail of systematically targeting females.

Ironically, we now live in a much more primitive culture than he did. Ironically, but not surprisingly.

It has occurred to me, we are devolving, not evolving. I guess it's the tendency of people who teach the theory of evolution to exclaim about how much more intelligent we are than our ancesotors but I have failed time and again to find proof of it. Our technology may be more than they had 2000 years ago but we wouldn't have any of it if it weren't for the brilliance of our ancestors, as one thing leads to another. It's egads whole lots easier to be born into this society they laid the path for and survive without too much trouble than it was to survive with very little for many of our ancestors, who had to be sharp and fit and ready most of the time, invent new ways of doing basic things more easily, figure out things that no one laid on your plate yet... we have become very degenerate in regard to our ancestors. we are a degenerate people at this point, in process of destroying our culture and ourselves within it.

Concerning abortion directly, it kind of makes you wonder how many brilliant minds we have thrown into the trash can, before they could even speak. And we convince ourselves somehow it's right. Without the theory of evolution, social darwinism, being drilled into the heads of generations of kids it never would have been possible that is a fact.

Several years ago I read an article in National Geographic that compared the behaviors of what is believed to be one of the most violent primitive people still left on earth (somewhere down in SA, cannibals even if i remember correctly) to our own culture. And essentially, in comparison, our culture is actually more violent was the conclusion.

and before we leave the subject of abortion too quickly, heres a diddy for you...

Margaret sanger, biggest voice in pro-abortion, founded planned parenthood etc (we'll have to get some of her very very racist writings and comments up here, many many, sterilization of black women etc) but anyway, she is thrust headlong into her quest for birth control and abortion, mostly for poor women and black women, the idea being that 'better' women should more and not so good women should breed less,,, and she has 3 children herself at that point and guess what? Her only daughter dies at age 5 or 6.

Such irony.

And this says something about evolution? Oh yeah, this is the if-any-evolutionist-ever-did-anything-wrong-then-all-evolutionist-must-agree-with-that-wrong-thing thread. Sorry, back to your regularly scheduled smear-the-evolutionists programming.

And remember, racism started in 1859 with the Theory of Evolution. Before that everyone loved each other. The American Indians lived in peace and harmony with the white men and gladly welcomed them on to the western prairie. The negros picked cotton happily in exchange for the room and board on the white man's plantation, cheerfully marrying the spouses that the owner of the land advised them to marry.

Also, infanticide began the same year. Before that no one ever killed a baby.

The idea of racial purity also began then. There was never any thought of prohibiting someone from marrying outside their own group before 1859.

It is really too bad that Darwin had to come along and destroy the paradise that we had prior to 1859. Now look at us now....murder, drugs, abortion, pornography, witchcraft, cultist religions, disrespect toward parents, stealing, covetousness, lust, adultery, greed, war, graft, lying tongues, eating unclean animals, wearing cloth of wool and flax, working on the Sabbath, and politics are rampant. All because of Darwin and his cavorting with Satan to come up with a way to doom the world, and they schemed up evolution. None of this stuff existed prior to 1859. I sure wish I had lived then.

No... not exactly, it is a comment on social darwinism.

all this time and all these posts, and I thought you were reading them. well maybe it's time to start. Because I don't think anyone here ever made those statements (aside from your self) or even implied them.

Rarely, except for pagans who believed they needed a sacrifice to appease their gods. And when they did otherwise kill babies, it was considered murder.

The idea of racial purity took on a whole new meaning as a matter of fact. Darwin made his race officially superior, had the idea condoned by his 'scientific' peers, and well, that's quite a discussion. We have been discussing it a bit you should join in more often and add some substantial factual information as where to exactly the idea of racial purity, and subsequently racial cleansing, has led us the past 100 years..

It is mathematically inevitable that deleterious mutations will pile up faster than beneficial mutations (if one believes in such). That's another topic, but the results are all around.

The title Descent of Man was more accurate than intended. If Darwin only knew, I'm sure he'd have changed it to Ascent of Man.

People think so backwards! They're programmed to regard their fellow man as an enemy or a liability no matter what. Employers consider workers to be a liability. Parents view children this way (thankfully it's often in jest). Big Brother tries everything to actually make children become a liability.

I don't know how far back this stuff goes, but it's very obviously wrong. I've told people too, if they don't consider me an asset, I'll look for another job.

No big surprise. "Civilization" generally translates quite well as "arrogance". Just look at the Romans.

There are a whole heck of a lot of civilizations between Ancient Rome and the modern world which would more appropriately fit the bill.

No argument there.

I think right now though what I will be looking into is the Huxley connection as you so poignantly pointed out, as being very important. I do agree with you. So I am just kind of looking into some things there... my question at current that I am working with is... was he just a money slut a great deal of the time or did his convictions truly drive him without any concern for profit on his part.

William Sumner, Skull & Bones member, and Social Darwinist, seems to deserve some credit. He's said to have been "instrumental in reforming the American university system", and he was an advocate for the robber barons as well.

More Sumner
Sumner vs. Noah Porter
Edit: Better Sumner vs. Porter

A surprising reinterpretation of Spencer - everyone else got him wrong, apparently.
fanboy page - some links to writings of Spencer, Sumner, & their kind.
Objectivism is or isn't Social Darwinism. Spencer vs. Sumner, anyone?

*** From what I gather on the "better" link I provided, Sumner seems to be the first "conversion" I've found. Oddly, it wasn't Darwin's biological work that seems to be the cause, but the attraction of Social Darwinism. How does one score that?

yeah well both Yale and Princeton have a long reputation for housing the successors of the robber barons and finding new ways to promote those views, however so 'liberally'.

It's important to keep in mind that Spencer, even Huxley, had little more than a few years of formal eduation. They may have been well read but their early foundational ideas existed very much in the vacuums of their own minds to a large extent. There wasn't any discourse and no one to discourse or clarify with.

And important to note, that slavery came to America from england. Everyone points to america when the word 'slavery' is mentioned but it was a British trade, modern England was built by the fortunes of slave traders and keepers.. the plantations of America, the east India company... all setup to provide imperial England with wealth.

How it is 125 years after the american revolution that we suddenly widely accept England's poor laws and class system stereotypes in the guise of science really makes me wonder.

I chuckle sadly reading darwin's notes about savage natives in the Voyage of the Beagle memoirs. It's as if he never visited the workhouses of Britain and saw the poverty on his own shores. Probably he did not.

Sumner say it all in one sentence right here, advocating blind acceptance...:

In writing of evolution there is no purpose to investigate or criticize Darwinism relating to “man’s place in nature.”

What’s Good for the Goose. . . : Labor and the Theory of Evolution
http://historymatters.gmu.edu/d/4999

He goes on to say...

We take man’s place in nature as it stands to-day regardless of his creation. His remote ancestors may have been apes or tadpoles, or, he may have been created as the Bible proclaims. In any case there has been going forward in processes of evolution a steady unfolding of mental powers, whatever may be said of man’s early physical endowment.

and then launches into rationalizing class and labor, not all of which I disagree with, but he forgets to mention that throughout history the enormous wealth of any and all pharaohs, emperors, kings or plantation capitalists has been acquired not by the willing labor of fellow citizens but the forced labor of captured peoples and subjugated citizenry... eg; whoever yields the biggest stick, sheds the most blood without blinking, and threatens to shed more until full compliance is achieved. Though he mentions education he fails to mention that education (or real education) has often been denied to the working labor slave classes to keep them in subjection so I have to disagree, evolution of 'mind' has really not been taking place at all. Evolution of methods of subjection perhaps and evolution of how to rationalize it in the minds of those who cater to various methods of the acquisition of enormous wealth is all I see. He fails to mention the various methods used to keep subjected peoples in their lowly places, the stripping away of basic human rights and needs etc so really, often exactly the reverse can be shown to be true in regard to evolution of intellectual powers, how a dignified person can be made to behave like an animal... He should have had a paragraph or two about pecking orders in there.

Do you think, perhaps, the fact that humans practice pecking orders means we are evolved from chickens?

People love to think slavery's the only means of subjugating others. It's often overlooked that different methods of subjugation were practiced in Ireland & India. A large array of tools have been developed. It's a shame most people don't recognize the current favorites for what they are.

Britain has a notoriously dreadful record for the education of anyone except it's wealthy upper classes. It only started considering funded public education around 1925 or so, real education, not just attending some sort of school 50-100 days per year for a year or two, to try to keep up with the US and other european countries.

Forget where I grabbed this quote from but a search for the 'history of public education in england' will pull more detailed info.

Campaigners for reform found themselves up against vicious hostility to the very idea of universal education. One Justice of the Peace, for example, opined in 1807 that:
'It is doubtless desirable that the poor should be generally instructed in reading, if it were only for the best of purposes - that they may read the Scriptures. As to writing and arithmetic, it may be apprehended that such a degree of knowledge would produce in them a disrelish for the laborious occupations of life.' (quoted in Williams 1965)

And when the Parochial Schools Bill of 1807 was debated in the Commons, Tory MP Davies Giddy warned the House that:
'Giving education to the labouring classes of the poor ... would teach them to despise their lot in life, instead of making them good servants in agriculture and other laborious employments to which their rank in society has destined them; instead of teaching them the virtue of subordination, it would render them factious and refactory ... it would enable them to read seditious pamphlets, vicious books and publications against Christianity.' (Hansard, House of Commons, Vol 9, 13 July 1807, quoted in Chitty 2004)

Darwin was quite the artist, have you seen these?

Wiki's 'Scientific Mythology' page lists some of the antihistorical propaganda which has been produced. Skull & Bones member Andrew Dickson White and others wrote distortions, and attempted to portray "religion vs. science" as an long, ongoing war. The idea is now called 'conflict thesis'.

Their mythology includes (from 1st link)
Quote
That people used to believe in a Flat Earth. While during some periods in history, certain groups have advocated theories of a flat earth, the knowledge that the Earth is likely a sphere of some sort dates back at least to Aristotle. According to historian Jeffrey Burton Russell, this myth has been used to encourage the dichotomy of science and religion.
as well as lies about Galileo, Copernicus, and others.

I know I was taught more than one of these lies, so their campaign seems to have been fairly successful. We know from other threads how stubbornly corrections to textbooks can be resisted. I'd be surprised is some of these lies don't still survive in schoolbooks.

Why China is the REAL master of the universe
http://www.dailymail.co.uk/pages/li...rticle_id=559133&in_page_id=1811

Cecil Rhodes, the businessman-imperialist of Africa, the creator of Rhodesia, suffered no flicker of doubt about who were the masters. "To be born an Englishman," he mused, "Is to win first prize in the lottery of life."

It wasn't idle boasting. In the jingoistic triumphalism of the late 19th century, when waving the Union Jack was a simple pleasure, people sang: "Rule Britannia! Britannia, rule the waves" without any irony. It was a statement of fact. A quarter of mankind lived under the British flag in the largest empire the world had ever known....

...To many Victorians, unquestioning of the ideology that underpinned much imperialism, British supremacy was a simple matter of racial supremacy - Europeans, and the English in particular, were fated to be the masters.

The truth is that we are masters of the world no more.

The global power shift from the West to the East is no longer just a matter of debate confined to learned journals and newspaper columns - it is a reality that is beginning to have a huge impact on our daily lives....

...But the world order we have grown used to - and comfortable with - over the last century is coming to an end.

..Napoleon III compared China to a sleeping giant and warned: "When China awakes, she will shake the world."

After a long hibernation, China, and her 1.3 billion people - twice the population of the U.S. and EU combined - is awaking almost overnight.

And not just China. The world's second most populous country, India, is industrialising at a historically unprecedented pace.

..Yet Western governments have been in such awe of China's looming power that their response has not been to challenge its abuses, but to try to silence their own protesters at home.

From the UN to the IMF to the World Bank, the international institutions that attempt to govern the planet were made in the image of the victors of World War II. Now power is shifting from West to East, the whole liberal democratic world order will face its first serious challenge in decades.

Many fear that things could get ugly.

There is only one thing worse than an unchallenged superpower - it is a superpower with a victim mentality, which feels the world owes it a favour.

And the bitter truth is that, after centuries of humiliation in foreign affairs, there is a nationalist mood in China that the country's time has come again, that it can again claim its rightful place as the world's most powerful country.

Its comparative weakness over the last few centuries is, in fact, but a blip in the last 2,000 years, during which China was the world's most economically and culturally advanced nation. ...

...Western attitudes of superiority to China and the rest of the East will also subside, as Westerners realise they are no longer the masters of the world.

The U.S. company Orient Express complained when Tata tried to buy it, that any association with the Indian company would damage the Orient Express's premium brand.

Responding, R K Krishna Kumar, a senior Tata executive, thundered that "Indian companies ... will take their rightful place in the international arena. "Enterprises and individuals must recognise and adapt to these fundamental economic changes. We believe that those with a fossilised frame of mind risk being marginalised."

In a world in which we are no longer masters, it is a warning that we ignore at our peril.

Maybe they felt they had to compete with the reputation of Harvard in some way. Harvard was founded by clergy.

I think if you explore the many and various myths and lies fed to people over the years to keep the poor in their place so that the upper 2-3% (wealthy) of the population could continue ever onward with their way of life, you'll find many interesting things. The British have a horrendous record in regard to their treatment of the poor and working classes, worldwide, basically attempting to enslave everyone everywhere for the sake of a few. Kind of funny the article above mentions that govts are rather silent about human rights abuses in China... silent I imagine because they are guilty of the same, although perhaps not in the past 50 years as much, perthaps just a blip in history for us there.

Check the wide discrepencies between the poor and the wealthy in England in/about 1800 for instance, and the many different deceitful means used to keep the poor poor, including even taxing them literally to death. and keep in mind that the wealth of america was largely built by the cotton industry, which fed England, which patronized plantation slavery and wage slavery in america, and that that wealth and the means of attaining it is not something any of these people have ever been willing to let go of easily. It was never achieved by truth and sympathetic equity for all, quite the opposite.

Allow me to assist in fleshing this out a bit. I've found some interesting information. I'll present it here one step at a time.

1.) When properly understood, evolution refutes racism. Before Darwin, people used typological thinking (the concept that organisms of a species conform to a specific norm; in this view variation is considered abnormal) for living things, considering different plants and animals to be their distinct "kinds." This gave rise to a misleading conception of human races, in which different races are thought of as separate and distinct. Darwinism helped eliminate typological thinking and with it the basis for racism.

2.) Genetic studies show that humans are remarkably homogeneous genetically, so all humans are only one biological race. Evolution does not teach racism; it teaches the very opposite. We're all brothers and sisters, dude.

3.) Racism is thousands of years older than the theory of evolution, and its prevalence has decreased since Darwin's day; certainly slavery is much less common and acceptable now. That is the opposite of what we would expect if evolution promotes racism.

4.) Darwin himself was far less racist than most of his contemporaries.

a.) Virtually all Englishmen in Darwin's time viewed blacks as culturally and intellectually inferior to Europeans. Some men of that time (such as Louis Agassiz, a staunch creationist apparently) went so far as to say they were a different species. Charles Darwin was a product of his times and no doubt viewed non-Europeans as inferior in ways, but he was far more liberal than most: He vehemently opposed slavery, and he contributed to missionary work to better the condition of the native Tierra del Fuegans. He treated people of all races with compassion.

b.) The views of Darwin, or of any person, are irrelevant to the fact of evolution. Evolution is based on evidence, not on people's opinions.

5.) Racism historically has been closely associated with creationism, as is evident in the following examples:

-- George McCready Price, who apparently is to young-earth creationism what Darwin is to evolution, was much more racist than Darwin. He wrote,

The poor little fellow who went to the south
Got lost in the forests dank;
His skin grew black, as the fierce sun beat
And scorched his hair with its tropic heat,
And his mind became a blank.

In The Phantom of Organic Evolution, he referred to Negroes and Mongolians as "degenerate humans."

-- During much of the long history of apartheid in South Africa, evolution was not allowed to be taught. The Christian National Education system, formalized in 1948 and accepted as national policy from 1967 to 1993, stated, among other things, that white children should 'receive a separate education from black children to prepare them for their respective superior and inferior positions in South African social and economic life, and all education should be based on Christian National principles'.

The policy excluded the concept of evolution, taught a version of history that negatively characterized non-whites, and made Bible education, including the teaching of creationism, and religious assemblies compulsory. Strange what you find when you hunt around a bit.

The Bible Belt in the southern United States fought hardest to maintain slavery.

Henry Morris, of the Institute for Creation Research, has in the past read racism into his interpretation of the Bible:

"Sometimes the Hamites, especially the Negroes, have even become actual slaves to the others. Possessed of a genetic character concerned mainly with mundane, practical matters, they have often eventually been displaced by the intellectual and philosophical acumen of the Japhethites and the religious zeal of the Semites" (Morris 1976, 241).

Do you think it's accurate for someone to claim that Chrstianity is inherently racist because of the beliefs and practices of these people and others?

6.) As I've said repeatedly, none of this matters to the science of evolution.
Cut & pasted from Talkdeceptions. Missing part reads
Quote
Although creationism is not inherently racist, it is based upon and inseparable from religious bigotry, and religious bigotry is no less hateful and harmful than racism.
This is their 5th point, so for points 5-7 the numbers don't match.

A little more research might have revealed the rebuttal found at http://creationwiki.org/index.php/Evolution_is_racist.

I hope to see sources listed in the future.

Was that actually a page when you posted earlier today? Because someone seems to have deleted it now, just several hours later. That is so funny, actions speak louder than words I'd say.

bury the evidence, go right ahead heh heh gosh that is so funny I don't know what to do. So typical heh.

I don't see how they keep trying to equate christianity with the racism of evolution. I mean honestly, the racism is in the evo works themselves, all anyone has to do is read darwin or so many others, look into eugenics.

where exactly where in the bible is a single word that even implies racism? The bible teaches exactly the opposite. Moses married a black woman even, could it be more obvious? MOSES.

I don't think even that they are aware of the fact that it was largely the Christian community in the US that helped free the slaves, ran the underground railroad, risked their own lives to do it. Built schools, taught black children, poor children and indians to read and write english. That white christian ministers walked with Martin Luther King to fight for civil rights.

Just because there are churches in communities does not mean, by any stretch of the imagination, that everyone in town is a christian.

All anyone has to do is take a look at the black community even today, what you find are lots and lots of black baptists and pentecostals, people with really strong faith. Christian hymns that trace back to the cotton fields. It was christianity, most very very directly that gave blacks the will, and the hope, to fight. But I guess, what this person is trying to imply even, is that black people are teaching racism. there isn't much option, that is what they are saying.

They'll need to rewrite the theories, and burn all the textbooks that ever taught Darwinism in order to actually claim that evolution does not teach racism. I think by now it's so evident that one lie just follows another with this crowd and they spend most of their time trying to think up new ones rather than investigating the real world, historically and even current, for real answers. I hope they are prepared to live with their own lies, and their wage slave children too. And I don't want to hear any complaining or whining about how things are not going well for any of them and don't give me any crap, pun intended, about being insensitive either.

http://creationwiki.org/index.php/CA005 should do better.
Or http://creationwiki.org/index.php/(Talk.Origins)_Evolution_is_racist if that doesn't work. There seems to be more than one way to get to the same page. Guess I got unlucky & picked one that doesn't want to work.

The point being, that the neither the bible nor Christianity teaches racism, it simply is not in there. Whereas, racism is a basic fundamental of Darwinism, found in every Darwinian based textbook, and Darwinism does promote conflict between people of different cultures and colors. Darwinism in any form, does not exist without the fundamental idea of struggle and conflict between races, and even economic classes of people.

Whatever or whoever did anything in between and at the same time called themselves a Christian or evolutionist, is completely irrelevant. It simply denotes a misunderstanding and misuse of the fundamental ideas and values presented by either position.

However, considering THE FACT that lies, fallacies, and contradictory assumptions are also very much part and parcel of the theory of evolution, it's not surprising to see evolutionists make these types of statements. Rather, we might expect this type of behavior from a person who, either openly or secretly, believes in their heart that they are superior to others. eg; everyone else is stupid.

Wiki's history of the big bang traces the idea back to Erasmus Darwin, 1791. If trees don't just consistently produce the same kind of fruit, I don't know what!

Interestingly, it also cropped up in Eureka: a Prose Poem by Poe. From what I can tell, this work was a mix of joke, science, nonfiction, and poetry; and there's not much agreement on which parts are meant to be taken seriously.

An interesting 2nd generation player. What most caught my eye was his conversion of relative morality into relative science:
Quote
When the 23 year-old Albert Einstein started a study group, the Olympia Academy, with his two younger friends, Maurice Solovine and Conrad Habicht, he suggested that the first book to be read was Pearson's The Grammar of Science. This book covered several themes that were later to become part of the theories of Einstein and other scientists. Pearson asserted that the laws of nature are relative to the perceptive ability of the observer. Irreversibility of natural processes, he claimed, is a purely relative conception. An observer who travels at the exact velocity of light would see an eternal now, or an absence of motion. He speculated that an observer who traveled faster than light would see time reversal, similar to a cinema film being run backwards. Pearson also discussed antimatter, the fourth dimension, and wrinkles in time.
the wiki article has several other interesting tidbits. Pearson was a fan of Marx and worked closely with Charles Darwin's cousin Francis Galton. Too much to list - just check the link.

For those who choose not to visit the link, I should point out one last item from his long list of accomplishments: 1898: awarded the Darwin Medal.

Sorry to post on Sunday morning. Come back later - this could eat up some time.

Yet these "others" also fail to provide one scrap of evidence that "stupification' is occurring.
Oh? Have you asked them? And just how much more evidence is required?

But just for laughs, here's some.
That was evidence; good evidence, but now prepare to witness rock-solid PROOF! That's the video. Here are the lyrics
My name is D to the I to C to the K, Yeah I'm the Dickie D,
I gots my PhD and comin' your way on the Youtube to bust your world view so just listen to me and don't you argue.

You see, this battle's been ragin' since Zeus was on the bottle,'tween Science like Democritus and Faith like Aristotle,
who said the mover was unmovin' like some magic trick but
that's no good logic, my posse is far too quick for this
religious sthick.

Cos science is the only way to know y'all, you stand with me y'all, or you can fall y'all

So go ahead and take your pick...

ES: Yeah you tell him Rick ...
Darwin : Cos if you don't know me ...

RD: YOU DON'T KNOW DICK!!

Chorus : Yeah he's the Dick to the Doc to the PhD,
he's smarter than you he's got a science degree!
Yeah he's the Dick to the Doc to the PhD,
he's smarter than you he's got a science degree!

SH:On the shoulders of midgets we built up this machine,
DD:YEAH!!!

RD: Science silenced that watchdog wingnut Paley
growing stronger and harder almost daily, storming Wilber by force as we framed the discourse that faith and science are split in schismatic divorce.

Then Darwin took to the seas to see what no one had seen, and ever since then we've been increasingly keen, they may never adore us, but they'll no longer ignore us,

give it to 'em PZ hit these BLEEP with the chorus!!!

Chorus : Yeah he's the Dick to the Doc to the PhD,
he's smarter than you he's got a science degree!
The Dick to the Doc to the PhD,
he's still smarter than you he studied biology!

Then there was Darrow dukin' it out with the straight and the narrow,
a ragin' bull in the ring, he did his thing, and took it on the chin like he was Bobby De Niro.

We might have lost at Scopes, beaten down by the dopes, and the stooges of popes, but in losin' we coped, becomin' more than we hoped, creationists slipped on the soap of their own slippery slope.

What was impossible, improbable, is now wholly unstoppable untoppleable, the Dick Doc'll roll up as you creationists foldup

you haters talkin' bull,
don't you know that this Dick is BLEEP blockable ...

Chorus : Yeah he's the Dick to the Doc to the phd,
he's smarter than you he's got a science degree!
The Dick to the Doc to the phd,
he's still smarter than you he studied biology!

Now the machine of our making, sees culture ripe for the taking,

Cos I'm the rappinest, rabidest atheist who unlike the Catholic, Muslim or even the Jew, believes that no God but science could ever be true, hell if I was dyslexic I'd even hate "dog" too.

Time to open your eyes, get yourself wise, the age of science will rise to be religion's demise,

and while you churchies all cry, shouting 'why God oh why,' I'll still be poppin' my collar earning more dollars than Allah.

Hollah!

Chorus : Yeah he's the Dick to the Doc to the phd,
he's smarter than you he's got a science degree!
The Dick to the Doc to the phd,
he's still smarter than you he studied biology!

Chorus : Yeah he's the Dick to the Doc to the phd,
he's smarter than you he's got a science degree!
The Dick to the Doc to the phd,
he's still smarter than you he studied biology!

Now for the good part. If you're sensitive to extremely foul language of different types, you can just laugh at the video & skip the proof. These atheist websites are unpleasant, but funny -really funny. The clowns don't get it.
PZ posted it himself!
BAUT loved it
Dick himself didn't approve, but his fans did

Didn't fool 100%, but I'd say 2/3 of them at least.

These jokers analyzed the tar out of that video. I haven't read all of what they wrote, but so far nobody's spotted 2 huge risks the songwriter took:
1."as we framed the discourse that faith and science are split in schismatic divorce." Acknowledges setting up a false dichotomy.
2. Right behind it "Then Darwin took to the seas to see what no one had seen, " Speaks for itself. None of their own would ever acknowledge this, not even in this context. Long ago, maybe Huxley in a spell of double-talk; maybe Darwin - um er, surely Darwin in soft-sell mode. But not today. Absolutely not.

A third dead giveaway is the reference to Aristotle, but evolutionists have such a strong aversion to history that this wasn't risky. They take their history like they take their science - spoon-fed.

I peeked ahead to the end, and eventually they somehow figured it out. Here's my best jewel of conceit so far
Quote
1. The lyrics are pro-science;
2. The scientific references in the text are far too numerous and knowledgable for creationists;
3. IDers would not use the word “creationism”. I think this is the killer arument;
4. The expelled logo is not the real logo of the movie (ducking copyright?);
5. The machine in the intro is a metaphor for science;
6. It makes the scientists look cool. Surely if this was a viral marketing campaign run by a PR firm they would not make that mistake. They are not that stupid…

And finally an ad hominem to please this crowd: Creationists simply can’t make something this awesome.
Let me know if you find better. I haven't read but about half the material so far, and I could've easily missed something.

Thanks for the laugh CTD! Absolutely brilliant parody!!!! I read some of the comments from the evolutionists, but not all. That gave me a bit of a laugh, but at the sametime, a little hard to stomach <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif" alt="" /> once more they're analysing and misinterpreting the obvious.

I've had to watch this youtube more than once it was so catchy and funny. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/cool.gif" alt="" />

By the way, did you catch the cartoon guy at 3.00 with the smoke and the head band "I love KKK" <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif" alt="" />

Shoot! I have lo-res due to dial-up. Still took 3 tries on account of timing out. But I read where one of them said it was "I (heart) beer" - maybe it was "booze". I had to take their word for it, but I'll have another look. Maybe the camera will zoom in at some point. You mention "3.00" so I'll look there first. Wait a sec... I forgot I can have a peek before posting.

Looks like a jug with "XXX", so I can see how that = booze. But they could be K's maybe. I don't have the rez to make it out clearly.

Whoever made that thing is a genius with no small amount of experience reading the enemy. It wouldn't've worked if they hadn't stupified themselves to the point they have. I'm not even close to getting tired of reading the posts on their boards (scrolling past the unfunny parts). They're a riot!

The only disappointment: the rap was too far outside the ken of Dawkins. He's arrogant enough, but he himself escaped. Of course he shares credit for the stupification of his disciples.

You're right that it's XXX, like yourself I have dial up and not so great clarity either- I had another look and yep it's a bottle <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/looney.gif" alt="" /> still, the messages throughout the entire video from the very beginning intro are blatant enough to speak volumes, not only in the lyrics, but the visuals. Even I saw that through an older not quite so clear computer/screen like mine.

Yes, the makers of this are geniuses. If an evolutionist did something like this (towards us), I'd still have to take my hat off to them. I sent it to a couple of people on email <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" />

I honestly can't believe the evolutionists discussing this could compound the problem by making bigger fools of themselves for laughing and saying it was pro-science and evolution and how brilliant they are and how creationists are stupid and not humerous enough to ever think something like this up LOL> Oh gees, no wonder you're reading their messages, I guess it does extend the laugh, but after awhile the cringeing aspect got to me. More stupidity than I could cope with. I was almost blushing in their behalf. A few of their own were obviously embarrassed and fully aware it was a wonderful p*ss-take. But the majority of the clowns were sucked in.

<img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif" alt="" />they certainly are a riot.

Great to see exactly who they all are, thanks for that. Though I recognised the lady in glasses from one of my videos. Very funny to see her sent up like that too. They take themselves and their own intellects VERY seriously.

By the way CTD, have you seen the eXpelled movie/documentary? I won't get to see it, not in my country anyway. New Zealand is where I am, secular for the most part. I'm disappointed too, would have liked to see the entire thing. I see the evolutionists/atheists are giving it the typical thumbs down and mocking it (surprise surprise). I don't take too much notice of that <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif" alt="" /> http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QUt7nZdUJIk&feature=related

oh yes, very cool. hoy. I will say no more but not for lack of trying. There simply is no more to say.

Pretty funny how upset the little movie makes people. I love the last line of the second review... it ought to be a crime. Ha ha, right after the guy tries to do a serious review about how the film is all lies and nonsense. gosh they really don't have a clue do they. I'd say probably all the reviews et all are probably going to be funnier than the movie.

I haven't seen it either btw, it'll be a few months before the dvd comes out and then we'll get it.

Yes indeed very funny.

The whole bit including the blogs.

This says it all:

6. It makes the scientists look cool. Surely if this was a viral marketing campaign run by a PR firm they would not make that mistake. They are not that stupid…

oh yes, very cool. hoy. I will say no more but not for lack of trying. There simply is no more to say.

XXX on the hat Bex, for sure. Looks like a jug of moonshine or else a cherry bomb that it's pasted on.
In that group, I'd have to go with #5. " The machine in the intro is a metaphor for science;". I've watched it quite a few times, and the machine chases people down the street just because it's evil. I can see how one could miss this, but if they'd done half the analysis they let on, what's the excuse?

And Bex, thanks much for the link. It's sweet that the very people they said couldn't possibly pull it off were behind it. I knew someone had some resources - there's even a trek communicator sound effect when Little Tool goes to summon Big Gadget.

What's Bill Engvall doing these days? I could see him losing his voice from saying "Here's your sign" so many times.

Edit: I was planning to hold off on seeing the movie. Don't even know if it's playing here. But this thing's been tickling me for 24 hours now. They deserve some some reward. If it's convenient, I'll try to add to their box office count.

As the movie's made for the general public, and can't go too long, I doubt I'll learn too awful much...

Sometimes I can hardly bare to read their reviews/comments sosick. There is this pretty embarrassing interview done with Richard Dawkins where he was unable to answer a direct question regarding evolution and he sat there and eventually he asked them to stop recording. He simply couldn't give an answer. Then when he composed himself, they started again when he was ready, yet he never answered the original question. Instead he branched off into the typical high-sounding woffle. This is on video and of course has now been posted on youtube.

Well, now it seems someone is trying to claim it as being a hoax. Can you believe this? If it were a hoax, the people responsible would certainly be liable for action by Dawkins, it's on video with all the names of those interviewed and those involved. In fact, they were kind to the guy, they shortened the time he took to "not answer" and cut out the bit where he asked that they stop taping and made it look less "embarrassing" for him. Though the youtube one shows a bit more than the video. The actual video was edited a bit.

I've seen the video, viewed all those involved and it was most definitely the real deal. He was faced with a direct question to do with evolution and he simply couldn't give an answer. And even when given time and another chance, he still never answered it and just veered off into the same complex sounding woffle, but giving no answer in the process. Tried to get himself off the hook.

I'm sure you've seen the one where they interviewed quite a few of them and showed them making these bold statements for all this evidence for evolution and then later showed them contradicting their previous statements when asked to give evidence/examples. Suddenly when faced with having to give answers, they climbed right down and previous statements of the enormous amount of evidence in the fossil record, were transformed into lots of back-peddling woffle and giving all kinds of excuses.

y/w for the link CTD, I thought you'd like that one! hehe.

Well I know and I guess that's the point. They have absolutely no idea that 13 year olds think they are hilarious. So utterly clueless the dick himself writes a serious review concerning it.

D to the dick straight on pretty clear i'd say and they still don't get it. Somebody tell them, not D to dick, D to the dick. hello anybody home? a bit like p from a pwcc ain't it? See if I get away with that.

absolutely hilarious so completely clueless. and the funniest part is the real life antics and charades they provide for the sequel.

the woman in that utube video is stunning btw. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/tongue.gif" alt="" />

I see you're discussing the film "Expelled." I thought you might be interested (or not) in visiting one of my favourite sites, called Rotten Tomatoes. It compiles film reviews from dozens of prominent critics and gives each film an overall average rating. So far, this film has rated a stunning 9%, and one of only 2 reviewers to give it a thumbs-up is from a Christian magazine. Dawkins isn't the only person claiming that this is a poorly-reasoned and poorly-made piece of propaganda. If you want to fly its flag for your beliefs it's your choice of course, but from the sound of it I wouldn't take any debate lessons from anything it says.

Thanks for the link Linda. But thumbs down by evolutionists/atheists won't put me off too much until I've viewed it for myself. These guys slag anything that challenges/opposes them and seem to do it in numbers too, seeming like the loud majority, drowning out the rest. I've seen their comments on many sites. Creationists do not tend to speak out enough, perhaps intimidated, or unsure how to argue with an evolutionist, but hopefully the tide is slowly changing. I'm just glad we are fighting back and hopefully those who believe in creation and have not been suckered into evolution, may start to speak out more and get involved. Even if we feel like the minority, so be it. I believe that this film eXposed would be one of the most unpopular films for evolution/ists, that we will be hearing not much more that a lot ongoing negative hype from them, as they seem to shout the longest and the loudest of anybody hoping of course that nobody watches it and not to take it "seriously" if they do. Sorry Linda, but I wouldn't take your word for it, or theirs. Thanks for the tips though <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif" alt="" />

I doubt I'll be seeing this movie anyway, (I'll get it on DVD when it comes out) good ole secular New Zealand has somehow managed to keep this one from coming out here. No surprise, they'd hate anything that just might get people thinking and asking questions on this matter. We are saturated in it.

There have been posts letting on that evolutionism was adopted on the basis of the science, and that scientists became convinced due to the evidence. Nobody other than myself has thus far come up with even a single example of "conversion"; rather I have been challenged to produce more and more evidence. (As if those requesting it care about evidence. They protest against it whenever it's presented, so figure that out...)

In response to these challenges, and because it is convenient, I submit this PDF, which discusses the very issue of how Darwinism became the dominant religion/philosophy. Initial reviews of Darwin's book were surprisingly insightful:
Quote
It is thus by a vague hypothesis, entirely unsupported by facts, that our author meets a
difficulty which appears to us, as it has appeared to many others, to be of the gravest
magnitude.... [Darwin’s approach is] to found a theory, not on our knowledge, but on our
ignorance. Nor is this the only instance in which he seems to have adopted similar reasoning....
We confess ourselves to have been somewhat astonished at this bold manner of disposing of
difficulties....We had imagined, too, that the facts reasoned upon ought to be real, and not
hypothetical....We confess that the adoption of such conclusions, unsupported by any positive
and independent evidence, merely on the demand of an unproved theory, appears to us little
consistent with the sobriety and dignity of philosophical investigation.
and
Quote
We are asked to believe all these “maybes” happening on an enormous scale, in order that
we may believe the final Darwinian “maybe” as to the origin of species. The general form of his
argument is as follows:—all these things may have been, therefore my theory is possible, and
since my theory is a possible one, all those hypotheses which it requires are rendered probable.
There is little direct evidence that any of these maybes actually have been. Many of these
assumed possibilities are actually impossibilities,…
This is all quite true. If one wants for amusement and has time to kill, it's funny to find for "imagin" in any of Darwin's books. This will hit on both "imagine" and "imagination", and he can't go half a page without asking the reader to conjure a mental image of some fantasy or another.

Of course, even after the virtual monopoly became established, there has always been dissent. An ICR article entitled More on Anti-Darwinian Scientists Exerpted from the New Book by Wendell R. Bird, J.D., Attorney reveals a little about the more recent situation.
Quote
An anti-evolutionist approach is taken by many non-creationist scientists. Olson reports that there are "some among the biologists who feel that much of the [macroevolutionary] theory accepted by the majority today is actually false.
One must expect the courage of such men to be tested, as the members of the evolutionist power structure grow ever more fearful.

And yet when it comes to actually confronting the evidence for things like an old earth, you won't address that. Instead you come here to sling some more mud at Darwin. You do not appear to be making a very convincing case for the "creation science" you advocate.

Well apparently neither you nor Linda have yet been able to figure out that this thread is not a debate about whether evolution is true or false so maybe you should answer your own question yourself, somehow, about your mental capabilities.

Ok, then the X-Club was a conspiracy to convince scientists of the truth (evolution). So, it is not the fact that they supported evolution that bothers you but, rather, their methods of using political muscle.

I guess then you would be opposed to the use of political muscle by the Discovery Institute, like when they contact school boards and churches to push the teaching of Intelligent(?) Design in science classes.

Hey! I'm ok with that. Theories should be supported by the evidence without undue influence.

I hardly know how to begin this post. I've been looking into the history of the founders of the "ice age" movement, and they're a tightly interconnected group. The characters are interesting enough that I've decided to basically limit myself to one per post, so as not to detract from their individuality.

Might as well start with the X Clubber John Tyndall.
Quote
Tyndall visited the Alps for purposes of recreation in 1849 and began to go there yearly for the purpose of studying the glacier formation. This resulted in 1856 in an expedition with Huxley and produced a joint treatise 'On the Structure and Motion of Glaciers'. For the next four years glaciers became the major focus of Tyndall's scientific interest. In the process he became an accomplished mountaineer and in 1860 he made the first ascent of the Weisshorn. He also published 'Glaciers of the Alps' in this year.
Tyndall didn't invent the "ice age", but he knew a good opportunity when he saw one, and contributed heavily to mythology.

His affinity for glaciers was greater than that of his fellow conspirators. Wiki reports
Quote
In 1876 Tyndall married Louisa, daughter of Lord Claud Hamilton. He built in 1877 a cottage on Bel Alp above the Rhone valley, and in 1885 a house on Hindhead, near Haslemere in Surrey. At the latter place he spent most of his later years; his health was, however, no longer as vigorous as his brain, and he suffered frequently from sleeplessness.
Later in the article it says
Quote
The problem of the flow of glaciers occupied his attention for years, and his views brought him into acute conflict with others, particularly James David Forbes and James Thomson. Every-one knew that glaciers moved, but the questions were: how they moved, for what reason and by what mechanism.
Tyndall has been greatly praised for his Belfast Address of 1874. I find it contains at least one interesting sentence:
Quote
The strength of the doctrine of evolution consists, not in an experimental demonstration (for the subject is hardly accessible to this mode of proof), but in its general harmony with scientific thought.

Probably the most controversial individual in the ice age picture is Luois Agassiz. A personal friend of Charles Lyell, Agassiz appears to have had his own unique ideas on origins.
Quote
The greatest obstacles in the way of investigating the laws of the distribution of organized beings over the surface of our globe, are to be traced to the views generally entertained about their origin. There is a prevailing opinion, which ascribes to all living beings upon earth one common centre of origin, from which it is supposed they, in the course of time, spread over wider and wider areas, till they finally came into their present state of distribution. And what gives this view a higher recommendation in the opinion of most men is the circumstance, that such a method of distribution is considered as revealed in our sacred writings. We hope, however, to be able to show that there is no such statement in the book of Genesis; that this doctrine of a unique centre of origin and successive distribution of all animals is of very modern invention, and that it can be traced back for scarcely more than a century in the records of our science.
Later in life, he opposed both Darwin and Häckel. I mean opposed, now.

Nevertheless, he was a major player in the ice age game. His origin myth seems to have involved a global ice age extinction event. Anyhow this ice age stuff is where we find even more Agassiz controversy.
Quote
THE AUTHORSHIP OF THE GLACIAL THEORY.

Fxrrv years have now elapsed since the glacial theory was first formulated
and piomulgated. This brilliant scientific conception is commonly supposed to
have originated with the Swiss savant, Louis A~assiz; but Dr. Otto Volger, in a
recent paper published in the Ailgemeine Zeitung, of Munich (February 17th and
18th), affirms and clearly proves that Agassiz borrowed this idea from Karl
Schimper, and that he was not only fully conscious of this indebtedness, but also
most carefully concealed it. In the interests of truth and justice, and as a matter
of scientific history, it certainly seems desirable that the facts in the case should
be presented to the English-reading public.

Louis had quite a knack for finding people to help him with financial & other support. He eventually made his way to North America.
Quote
wiki says:
The financial and scientific advantages presented to him in the United States induced him to settle there, where he remained to the end of his life. He was appointed professor of zoology and geology at Harvard University in 1847 where he founded the Museum of Comparative Zoology in 1859 and served as the museum's first director until his death in 1873. During his tenure at Harvard, he was, among many other things, an early student of the effect of the last Ice Age on North America.

The wiki on Agassiz isn't bad. I also found an online biography by some woman who seems to have been quite a fan.

I haven't found much on Karl Schimper. http://www.questia.com/library/encyclopedia/schimper-karl-friedric.jsp
and http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Karl_Schimper say about as much as seems to be out there. Nothing much on his motives & philosophies, so that's disappointing.

E. Ray Lankester connects these dots. A follower of Huxley, he was also "a friend of Karl Marx in the latter's later years and was among the few persons present in his funeral"

Interest in this thread has waned, but I came across this.

Following up on a SoSick lead, I encountered the story of Bathybius. Huxley's great discovery of abiogenesis in progress, and a prediction of the brilliant Häckel, the substance eventually turned out to be a little less impressive than the hype.
Quote
One of Mr. Murray's assistants poured a large quantity of spirits of wine into a bottle containing some pure sea-water, when lo! the wonderful protoplasm Bathybius appeared. It was the chemical precipitate of sulphate of lime produced by the mixture of alcohol and sea-water. This was bathos indeed.

The Imaginary Lamarck is an interesting piece I chanced upon.

Looks like not all evolutionists support all lies in all textbooks, at least.

Quote
The Lamarck presented in schoolbooks, however, is a fiction -- an imaginary figure who has been fashioned from hearsay and wrong guesses, and who has been replicated in countless books by successive teams of plagiarists. This figure shares very little, except his name, with the Lamarck of history. Textbook-writers have imbued the fictitious Lamarck with an importance that the real Lamarck never had, and they have credited him with ideas that the real Lamarck did not hold. They also have invented a myth in which those ideas are compared falsely with Darwin's ideas, to produce a bogus dichotomy.

It's always good to see antihistory debunked.

Last night Dicey & Litchfield were talking about J. Stuart Mill, never expressing his religious convictions, as he was urged never to do by his Father.f2f3 Both agreed strongly that if he had done so he wd. never have influenced the present age in the manner in which he has done. His books wd. not have been text-books at Oxford.— To take a weaker instance Lyell is most firmly convinced that he has shaken the faith in the Deluge &c far more efficiently by never having said a word against the Bible, than if he had acted otherwise.— ...

The tail end is interesting also.

P.S. Oct 22d. Hen. has taken your M.S. to London, & will write.— I have lately read Morley's Life of Voltaire & he insists strongly that direct attacks on Christianity (even when written with the wonderful force & vigour of Voltaire) produce little permanent effect: real good seems only to follow from slow & silent side attacks.— I have been talking on this head with Litchfield, & he strongly concurs, & insists how easily a man may for ever destroy his own influence.

I repeat that your essay seems to me clever & interesting, but I urge you to pause long, & if you do, I do not think that you will publish it.

Remember that every author worth a fig writes far more than he ever publishes. On the whole after deliberating to the best of my power I advise you not to publish; but in such cases every man must judge for himself.

In ordinary speech a system of any sort is said to be stable when it cannot be upset easily, but the meaning attached to the word is usually somewhat vague. It is hardly surprising that this should be the case, when it is only within the last thirty years, and principally through the investigations of M. Poincare, that the conception of stability has, even for physicists, assumed a definiteness and clearness in which it was previously lacking. The laws which govern stability hold good in regions of the greatest diversity; they apply to the motion of planets round the sun, to the internal arrangement of those minute corpuscles of which each chemical atom is constructed, and to the forms of celestial bodies. In the present essay I shall attempt to consider the laws of stability as relating to the last case, and shall discuss the succession of shapes which may be assumed by celestial bodies in the course of their evolution.

Now where would a boy get the idea to use the term 'evolution' so?
Quote
I believe further that homologous conceptions are applicable in the consideration of the transmutations of the various forms of animal and of vegetable life and in other regions of thought. Even if some of my readers should think that what I shall say on this head is fanciful, yet at least the exposition will serve to illustrate the meaning to be attached to the laws of stability in the physical universe.

Um hmmm. These are, by the way, the words of Sir George Darwin, , K.C.B., F.R.S. penned in 1909.

(Or prior to 1909. They were published in a book edited by A.C. Seward in 1909, so they may have been earlier. I'll be sloppy & leave it at that, okay?)

We have encountered claims that Darwin's habit of stating objections to his proposal in his books is merely a result of "Victorian literary style". If memory serves, even AiG repeats this.

Quote
When he came to review Origin of Species in 1859, Huxley identified this same method of forming sound beliefs as characteristic of Darwin: "so outspoken [is] his conviction, so honest and fair the candid expression of his doubts." Huxley urged that Darwin's readers adopt the same frame of mind: a state of "doubt which so loves truth that it neither dares rest in doubting, nor extinguish itself by unjustified belief."

In support of his claim, Huxley referred to the many passages in Origin in which Darwin raised objections to his own theory, or discussed the limits of scientific knowledge on particular questions. One can indeed find numerous examples of this in Darwin's publications: his devotion of a whole chapter in Origin to the difficulties of the theory of descent; his mode of assembling evidence favourable and unfavourable, circling around a position from all sides for dozens of pages, as in his writing on hybrid sterility in Variation in animals and plants under domestication (1868); or on the origin of human races in Descent of man (1871).

Some leading Darwinians found this approach frustrating. Alfred Russel Wallace repeatedly urged Darwin to place more emphasis on the facts favourable to natural selection, and worried that Darwin gave leverage to his critics by calling attention to the difficulties of his theory. Indeed, Huxley's own style of debate, often aggressive and confrontational, hardly followed the Darwin role model.

I find it noteworthy that his contemporaries do not attribute these features of his writing to style. It seems odd that fellow Victorians would be so utterly unaware of a "common literary style".

Considering Darwin's advice to his son (in the preceding post), I think it is fair and prudent to conclude he firmly believed in the "soft sell" approach, and practiced it.

What Darwin did was to make it current intellectual coin. He gave it a form that commended itself to the scientific and public intelligence of the day, and he won wide-spread conviction by showing with consummate skill that it was an effective formula to work with, a key which no lock refused. In a scholarly, critical, and pre-eminently fair-minded way, admitting difficulties and removing them, foreseeing objections and forestalling them, he showed that the doctrine of descent supplied a modal interpretation of how our present-day fauna and flora have come to be.
(I supplied the bold)

J. ARTHUR THOMSON doesn't attribute Darwin's habit to "literary style" either.

I don't think that argument is very persuasive, all things considered. We see that the promoters of evolutionism played on this aspect of his writing in promoting of Darwinism, in fact. What? Is it a one-way street? Were they liars? (Okay, that last one's too easy.)

is the index to the 100 year old ESSAYS IN COMMEMORATION OF THE CENTENARY OF THE BIRTH OF CHARLES DARWIN AND OF THE FIFTIETH ANNIVERSARY OF THE PUBLICATION OF "THE ORIGIN OF SPECIES" I think there's potential to discover quite a bit about the history & context of evolutionism's progress there.

Editing to add:
I'm disappointed in the contents. Surely they could've found better writers. A good deal does not make sense, and that which does is usually pretty disgusting. Imagine talkdeceptions 1909, with a bigger vocabulary.

I don't recommend wasting too much time following up, and one can find offensive language elsewhere on the page if one follows this link.

as I was asked by Laura Huxley, shortly before her death last December, to create and direct the Thomas Henry and Aldous Huxley Foundation. (I was also honored to become a member of the nine member X Club, where I’m expected to be some kind of cross between Hooker, Galton, and Spencer; as botanist, statistician, and positivist, respectively). I am having difficulty figuring out when people at Wikipedia are joking.

An unusual claim, but fairly plausible, all things considered.

In later years, T.H. Huxley wrote of Darwin's reception in the scientific community. (<Project Gutenberg link) Not the easiest reading, and full of disinformation, but it still bears witness in its own twisted way.

Myself, I was primarily interested in tracking down the ever-elusive "conversion" story. No luck.

Quote
On the whole, then, the supporters of Mr. Darwin's views in 1860 were numerically extremely insignificant. There is not the slightest doubt that, if a general council of the Church scientific had been held at that time, we should have been condemned by an overwhelming majority.

(I'm adding bold)
Quote
That which we were looking for, and could not find, was a hypothesis respecting the origin of
known organic forms, which assumed the operation of no causes but such as could be proved to be actually at work. We wanted, not to pin our faith to that or any other speculation, but to get hold of clear and definite conceptions which could be brought face to face with facts and have their validity tested. The 'Origin' provided us with the working hypothesis we sought.

A confession follows in the following paragraph.
Quote
In my earliest criticisms of the 'Origin' I ventured to point out that its logical foundation was insecure so long as experiments in selective breeding had not produced varieties which were more or less infertile; and that insecurity remains up to the present time.

So it was not on the basis of any tested hypotheses that evolutionism was adopted. Earlier Huxley had insisted on the methodological requirement that an hypothesis must be tested; looks like he "mellowed with age."

More than once he refers to the "old" and "new" generations. The alert reader will have no trouble understanding that a process of replacement took place. He does not name a single man-of-science "converted" from "YEC"-style creationism; although he lists converts from other denominations within evolutionism itself.

Hux' language is prejudiced throughout the piece. If he put any effort into concealing his bias, it doesn't show. Now can you imagine the praise he'd've heaped upon the head of anyone who'd abandoned truth for their pile of lies! ...If only such a fool could've been named... Instead, he is forced to paint "his generation" as stubborn.
Quote
It was badly received by the generation to which it was first addressed, and the outpouring of angry nonsense to which it gave rise is sad to think upon. But the present generation will probably behave just as badly if another Darwin should arise, and
inflict upon them that which the generality of mankind most hate--the necessity of revising their convictions. Let them, then, be charitable to us ancients; and if they behave no better than the men of my day to some new benefactor, let them recollect that, after all, our wrath did not come to much, and vented itself chiefly in the bad language of sanctimonious scolds. Let them as speedily perform a strategic right-about-face, and follow the truth wherever it leads.

This is typical Huxley double-talk. Earlier he said
Quote
It would indicate a lack of sense, as well as of modesty, to ascribe to the men of that generation less capacity or less honesty than their successors possess. What, then, are the causes which led instructed and fair-judging men of that day to arrive at a judgment so different from that which seems just and fair to those who follow them?

If this seems like overkill, please remember that this is history with which we deal. It is difficult to over-verify conclusions.

Matthew Chapman's mother Clare was the daughter of the philosophy professor and author Francis Cornford and poet Frances Cornford (née Darwin), and through his maternal grandmother he is a great-great grandson of Charles Darwin.

Small wonder he cranks out so much low grade propaganda.
