mikey:

I took Algin for quite a few months in a row, and felt that it was helpful.

I hate Algin and refuse take it again. But it’s a personal thing for me and many people find it helps. (algin is the main ingredient in Gaviscon which I took for 5-6 years…….it suppressed my heartburn symptoms just enough for me to ignore the cause of my problems for far far too long.)

Just to clarify...Gaviscon (a non-prescription, OTC heartburn medication) is NOT the same thing as the Algin (sodium alginate) we use.

According to DrugDigest.com and Medications.com, Gaviscon contains the active ingredients [color:"red"]Aluminum hydroxide [/color] (the most stable form of aluminum) and Magnesium carbonate (or Magnesium trisilicate or Calcium carbonate, depending on the formula). In addition, Gaviscon contains several inactive ingredients, one of which is Alginic acid. However, Alginic acid is chemically different than Sodium alginate (i.e. sodium alginate is the sodium salt of alginic acid). I've seen the two names used interchangeably on some websites, but this is actually not correct.

Personally, I would not take anything with Aluminum in it, due to the interaction between aluminum and mercury, as confirmed by Dr. Boyd Haley. By the way, Aluminum hydroxide is also used in some vaccines!

I've read a few posts on other forums from people who got sick right after taking Gaviscon...sounds like awful stuff.

Instead of using Gaviscon, I would suggest Stomach Comfort

As for Algin, people primarily use it to help prevent the reabsorption of mercury in the colon. This is extremely useful for those who currently have amalgam fillings, are receiving vaccinations, or who are detoxing mercury.

In our experience, 6 out of 10 mercury-toxic people who use Algin report an astounding decrease in their mercury symptoms; 3 out of 10 report small improvments; and 1 out of 10 experience some gas and/or bloating (which we believe is a side-effect of the interaction with mutated colonic flora). This interaction can be easily mitigated with Probiotics and/or Colloidal Silver.

Hope this helps clear up any confusion!

Hi Laura. I have not taken the Algin you sell. What type of Algin is it?

How does it work?

Gaviscon liquid, Gaviscon 250 tablets and Gaviscon extra strength tablets all contain three active ingredients: sodium alginate, sodium bicarbonate and calcium carbonate. (NB. Gaviscon extra strength tablets and larger packs of Gaviscon liquid and 250 tablets are only available from pharmacies.) The three active ingredients of Gaviscon work together to relieve the symptoms of gastro-oesophageal reflux, such as heartburn.

Gastro-oesophageal reflux is stomach acid flowing from the stomach back into the food pipe (oesophagus). Various conditions can cause reflux as a result of the pressure they exert on the stomach, for example, pregnancy and hiatus hernia. Reflux can cause symptoms such as indigestion, acid regurgitation, or the painful burning sensation of heartburn. Over long periods of time the acid can also damage and inflame the lining of the foodpipe. This condition is known as reflux oesophagitis.

The active ingredients of Gaviscon are not absorbed into the bloodstream. Instead they work by forming a "raft" that floats on the surface of the stomach contents, physically preventing the acid from flowing back into the foodpipe.

Sodium alginate is a naturally occuring substance that is found in a particular type of seaweed. In the presence of the calcium carbonate it reacts with the acid in the stomach to form a gel. Sodium bicarbonate also reacts with the acid in the stomach to form bubbles of carbon dioxide. These bubbles are trapped by the gel and they allow the gel to float like a raft on top of the stomach contents.

The raft prevents acid in the stomach from flowing back into the food pipe. This relieves the symptoms of reflux such as heartburn. In the case of reflux oesophagitis it not only relieves the symptoms, but also protects the inflamed foodpipe from the acid and allows it to heal.

The raft lasts for about three to four hours on top of the stomach contents and is then broken down in the digestive system and excreted in the faeces.
