today has honestly been a nightmare for me.
my 13 yr old daughter went to a dentist, she needed a filling done, i had to send her with her grandma as i cant go in dental offices because of mercury.
she came home with an amalgam filling. i am heartbroken the bloody stupid dentist knew i wanted her to have a composite but he put in mercury. he was claiming howsafe it was and how stronger they are to the composites. already she is having blurred vision.
i made another appt straight away with a mercury free dentist in london for monday to have it removed safely. i just cant believe this nightmare situation im in. The grandma thinks im being over protective and she called me hyper, she was trying to defend the dentist and says the one im going to monday is a rip off and mercury is completly safe. i feel sick!
i am venting, dont know who else to talk to.

OMG!!!!!!! This dentist has NO right to ignore your requests and concern regarding your daughter. You should get a refund from him for doing something that was contrary to what was asked, plus causing you extra pain and suffering in the process and now having to fork out for the job to be REDONE thanks to his deliberate gross negligence.

I would be absolutely furious. Well, the grandmother may think you're hyper over it, overreacting or whatever, as many of them do with people like us, but once again, matters not. You did not ask for an amalgam, you asked for composite and he's ridden roughshod over your requests and done his own thing.

I would actually make a complaint to the dental council/association if he does not give a refund. Whether they believe in mercury or not, is not the issue, you simply did not ask for amalgam, you asked for something you were not given and then charged for it. So the fact of the matter is, he owes you a refund. No question about it.

What an absolute b*stard. Whose supposed to be doing the service here? HE IS. Talk about taking over and taking control. He's the employee, the payer is the master. The customer is always right. I am so sick of some of these dentists doing this, I've heard it from others also. I feel like kicking their teeth down their throat and then charging them for the extraction.

Dawn, the next dentist your daughter goes to, should make a note about this. He/she should also be biologic and not use any amalgam in his practise. Don't go near anybody who does, because it's likely they'll only remove a bit and then cover it up with composite (not believing in the dangers of mercury).

The new dentist can give written proof that an amalgam was put in by a previous dentist and has had to be replaced and then paid for by the patient's Mother, because the other dentist ignored your requests. Definitely take some action on this. The dental council/association needs to know about it. It's like me going to a hairdresser and asking for a trim and getting a number 2 instead. It doesn't MATTER if the hairdresser says "well it's safe, you'll be ok". <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/gunshot.gif" alt="" /> I mean for starters that would traumatise me (and anybody else who saw me), but again I got what I did not ask for, therefore you can get a refund or even more if there has been pain and suffering or inconvenience because of it.

Sorry, Im venting even more than you at the moment and it's not even my daughter. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/shiftyeyes.gif" alt="" />

Hi Dawn
I am so sorry that really sucks. I know how you feel especially when everyone else is saying they can't hurt you. Yeah sure they don't. It would be harder for them to say that if they felt like we all did. It really sucks also for you to have to be out this extra expense as well. Did the dentist offer any of your money back? I bet not huh? Well hang in there and I will be thinking about your daughter.

a**hole.... he is probably mercury toxic and brain damaged. Don't forget to choose the RIGHT dentist for amalgam removal or she will get really sick.

A question. Was the cavity large and in a rear tooth? if so, then a composite might not have been appropriate, and then the choice would be a porcelain inlay or onlay or an amalgam. If he said the choice is an inlay or onlay or an amalgam, would you be happy to choose an inlay or onlay, even if it means her having to make a second visit to the dentist in two weeks, getting a temporary filling now, and paying a much higher cost? My dentist told me the other day that he does still use mercury amalgam once every few months, when a composite filling will not be strong enough(such as a large cavity in a rear tooth), and the patient is not willing to pay for an inlay or onlay.

Give her some colon cleanse herbs right away. I'd give her some dmsa too. a hundred mgs every day all week at least.

If that happened to my kid, if I had specified composite with the dentist and he put amalgam in instead I would sue, at least in small claims court.

easy easy case there. he should be the one to pay for the removal to do the job you originally had asked him to do.

Too bad. You should explain to grandma the kid now lost half her tooth when all she probably needed was a teeny tiny filling.

hahaha i love it bex. i totally agree with your post. if i was in that situation and a dentist didn't respect what i said, especially regarding my kid, and was totally irresponsible, neglecting to do what we both agreed on, he would never ever do something like that again after i was done with him. i would take whatever legal action possible and sue his censored to the fullest degree.

i know there has to be documentation stating the dangers of from what i hear, mercury being one of the most toxic substances on earth . am i correct on that? i just think that is so messed up and doctors dentists etc think they can do whatever they want.

Dawn, I am outraged. I can imagine how you must be feeling. If someone had done this to my daughter I'd have trouble restraining myself from going straight over there and speaking my mind. I think Bex has given some sensible advice. What's more, there's obviously an issue to be addressed with your mother (or your mother-in-law). I know how hard it can be, I've been at loggerheads with mine over food issues. They may think what we're doing is silly, whatever, but that doesn't give them the right to override our wishes as parents.

Your child is lucky to have a mother like you. There are many others walking around with mouthfuls of mercury, storing up future illnesses, and they and everyone around them is oblivious.

Let us know how you get on, and best wishes.

Thankyou so much for your support, i dont feel so alone now. Yesterday if it hadnt been for me going to work i would have gone down to that surgery and ripped that dentists head off, i was so angry i thought i would die of heart failiure. Im dealing with the mother in law too, she is a very strong opinionated woman and we have had major arguments in the past but i swear this time im never speaking to
her again. the thing is her friend works there on the reception and has informed her theres absolutely no danger in mercury as when it sets it cant escape, if only i had some proof that it does leek out 24 hrs a day. , i just explained that under no circumstance should she get any amalgam but my opinions and wishes arnt worth it, they mean nothing.
the dentist said he hole is deep but small on the first molar, she may need a root canal, he filled it with mercury bcause he said a composite would react, i dont know what he meant.
he wants her back in 14 days to see if the pain is still there if so then a root canal is needed, if pain is gone he would drill iut amalgam and put composite in, he has never heard of a rubber dam, this is why i booked in for a mercury free dentist in london, they provide all protection. here in the Uk children dont pay for amalgam, so it was free,
i dont know what to do if the dentist in london says she needs a root canal, i dont know wether to get the tooth pulled or a root canal, i know they are dangerous, Hal Huggins says they are more dangerous than amalgam, i dont know if he is right. i would be willing to pay for a tooth implant later on down the line though its such a shame shes only 13 and everyday i drummed it into her that she must look after her teeth.
Cheers Dawn xx

Now that would make my blood boil with rage. What a complete $%^$%$%. That is really seriously double mega bad news. What a *&%^&^%&%. I would not, could not restrain myself from that BS. I’d in there like a flash swinging and wind-milling. After all the trouble we are going through getting rid of the stuff! Ahhhhhhhhhh!

Well done for arranging removal immediately. The sooner the better. You know all the rules and safe protocols too.

I 100pct would go legal on that asap. I’d complain real big on that. I don’t like to think what I would do if some stupid dickhe.d put amalgam my daughters mouth……..no, I’d go funking crazy….

Good luck dawn, at least you know and can resolve the situation quickly, think of all the other poor sods who will never know……

I agree with Bex. The dentist should have to give you a refund and I would probably send him a bill for the extra expense of replacement if there is any. Even if he thought that a composite wasn't good makes no difference-he should have talked to you before doing anything.

Stay away from that dentist. He's never heard of a rubber dam? all dentist should have and use those for certain procedures-he sounds lazy and uncaring to me.

I would research the root canal thing more. Like you, I hear that they are never a good choice, but I don't know what would be.

As far as telling her to take care of her teeth, I have come to the conclusion that brushing and stuff isn't want really matters. I took very good care of my teeth growing up-brushing after snacks even- and I had a mouth full of fillings. From what I have read it has more to do with your insides. If you are acidic (which you are when you are toxic) that is what causes the teeth to rot. Also, I wonder about the calcium/magnesium balance thing. I was made to drink milk with every meal and took calcium starting at 18 years old to "prevent the osteoporosis" that runs in my family". I now know that too much calcium makes for lots of problems and I think that a magnesium deficiency adds in teeth and bone decay.

I'm sorry that you have this new problem to deal with <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/frown.gif" alt="" />

That is a nightmare.
I can only imagine how upset and angry you must feel,
I also would have gone straight to that stupid dentist and ate the head off him. That is outrageous.
You are doing the right thing having the filling replaced asap and you will know how to help your daughter so she is blessed to have a mother who is even aware of this issue.
Lots of children her age have a mouth full of that crap.( of little consolation I'm sure... that is perhaps not the point and there should be no amalgam placed at all)

When they gave out the vaccinations the other day in my sons class, I sent him in late so there was no chance they could give him the vaccine by mistake. Thanks to your story I will also make sure I am with him at a mercury free dentist.
the extra cost is worth it.
I hope it works out well for you and your daughter.

Dawn, I would under no circumstances take her back to this guy. For starters, he's not a biologic dentist, so he's not considering her well being AT ALL. You also require second opinion on something this big. Root canals cost a bunch and are very very toxic, moreso apparently than mercury. I have heard of how bad they are and sosick will tell you what happened to her after she got one.

Wipe this guy, take her to the biologic dentist who will give you his biologic opinion on what would be the best move for her. Also, it takes time for a tooth to settle after any replacement and pain is not abnormal. The mainstream dentist will be very quick to give her a root canal, as well as the fact this gives him a nice big sum of money in the process. Even if you were not bothered by the toxic side of it, second opinions are usually wise.

But I'd definitely wipe him either way. If it turns out with the biologic dentist that this tooth is too far gone? I would have it extracted, unless this biologic dentist has a new way of doing root canals that are proving safe. Otherwise extraction (with periodontal ligament removal and no vaso constrictor anaesthetic) might be the only other option.

It's one I may have to take too. I have one molar that has a very deep cavity and have found it painful on and off. The one thing I've learned is not to eat on that side too much, to let it rest and sometimes these things can improve again. Trauma from dental work doesn't help. I'd be surprised at her early age that she requires root canal.

Definitely get a second opinion Dawn, this guy still did his own thing without informing you, which shows he's not very trustworthy in the first place. If he realised that composite would not be suitable, he should have done NOTHING and then told you the situation. He just went and did it.

Also, this is rubbish anyway. Composites are much stronger these days and usually used in deep cavities anyway, but if this really WAS the case? Then why did he not use porcelain? Inlays are just fine. Very strong and are used in very deep cavities. Cerec is the one I chose, very biocompatible and apparently eliminates the need for a crown. Self repairing, almost life long lasting!

So the option could be removing the amalgam and if it requires a stronger material than composite? Porcelain could be the way to go (just make sure it's not metal base one). Cerec I think is one of the best. You can ask the dentist what kinds they have before taking this further.

There are many other options Dawn, forget the mainstream dentist, he's not got health in mind at all. Your Mother in law is buying into the bullshit of mercury safety. Mercury has been banned already in areas around the world. It is known how dangerous it is.

Hi Dawn,

I just wanted to send you some {{{{{hugs}}}}}}. You must feel as though you'd like to torture that dentist. I know I do and it's not even my child that's involved. But I'm a mother also and I understand entirely what you're going through.

I think our Bex has given outstanding advice, as usual.

I just wanted you to know that I am thinking about you. And don't try to quash those Mama Bear protective instincts! They are there for a reason. If you have to literally bull doze people that might be in your path (including your mother-in-law) while you're giving the best care to your child, then you do it.

Sharon

p.s. I'd personally like to hang that dentist by his toenails and give him a dose of his own medicine. Sorry to sound so violent, but nothing gets my feathers more ruffled then an issue like this involving a child.

My stomach sank when i read this.
What an arrogant, self-righteous, occupationally-exposed moron to do this to your child - against your wishes - like he knows best?!

I hope this biologic dentist can get the metal out safely but your daughter may have been sensitised for life?

I'd get legal advice - this is a TOTAL VIOLATION.

Hi Dawn:

I would be upset too. Would be enough to have smoke pouring from my ears! But at least you have a plan to get it out.

These dentists that still use mercury must be mad or just plain dumb. They have done autopsies of dentists and proven that mercury is in their bodies and brains. How long does this have to go on before they get it? Why don't you anonymously mail him a copy of the letter to the FDA I attached. Address it: Hey Nimrod!

From the 1993 letter to the FDA:

"Numerous scientists have concluded that dentists and their staff are being poisoned by dental mercury. An increased incidence of spontaneous abortion and decreased fecundability are just two glaring examples of how women working in dentistry are injured because of the FDA failure to properly regulate or ban this implant material. Kidney function of dentists is worse than their comparative workers in cadmium industry. In addition, a variety of scientific and clinical evidence exists implicating mercury from fillings in other health conditions, including neurological disorders."

More quotes from letter. If it is in us patients, you would think those who actually handle the stuff daily are saturated with it:

"As set out in the reasons below, the evidence is clear that in those patients with mercury/silver fillings, dental mercury is the predominant source of mercury in the brain and other body tissues."

"At the time dental mercury was classified in 1987 no mention was made to any of those references previously furnished. Since that time autopsy studies have shown that the brain-levels of mercury correspond to the filling surfaces and that the mercury is inorganic i.e. coming from the fillings, rather than methyl mercury coming from fish."

Blah, blah, blah, just like the energizer bunny, the insanity of this situation goes on, and on.

Hope all goes well, Dawn. If you see him on the street, kick him in the cahonies. Maybe that will get his attention.

Hi again
To expand on my earlier response, here are a couple of potentially useful sites to aid this awful situation;

http://www.adviceguide.org.uk/h_nhs_dental_treatment.pdf
http://www.adviceguide.org.uk/index/family_parent/health.htm
http://www.healthcarecommission.org.uk/aboutus/complaints.cfm
http://www.pals.nhs.uk/cmsContentView.aspx?Itemid=944

This guy went against your specific instructions. Would be very interesting to find out more about this dentist / practice, and how many other instances of ignoring parental requests (etc) have gone on. Do they bother to check the patient's health/status at all before carrying out traditional 'treatments'?!

If a composite filling would not have been appropriate, then at least he should have given other choices before just using an amalgam. Perhaps an inlay or onlay, perhaps Zirconium? Perhaps something else? I agree that just pushing forward with amalgam is wrong. he should have at least given you a phone call saying that composite won't work, and offered alternatives besides amalgam.

Hi guys, thanks again for all your responses.
My daughter came home early last night complaining of feeling weird with tingling limbs, vision problems and feeling down. she had problems before, mostly emotional, i think her immune system is down because she seems to get everything, shes had meningitus and has asthma so im really worried. i ordered some more dmsa, shel start it straight after if all goes well, i hope she can take it every 4 hrs while at school.
she cant get a root canal,if the old dentist drilled too far, il ask the dentist to extract it,I aim sending my mother in law my Hal Huggins book, uninformed consent with a load of info il print off my computer about amalgam dangers to prove to her the truth.
i think she may having given the dentist permission but i cant prove it,its hard to know what to do. I blame myself for all this sending my daughter to a mickey mouse dentiist with someone like my mum in law who loves amalgam. she says she has loads of fillings and very healthy, but shes on antidepressants, has osteoporosos, going deaf, has tinnitus since childhood, breast cysts and arthritus, she cant move some of her fingers or toes. il let you know how it goes tommorow.

Hi Dawn,

Your position is very difficult, like myself you get sick just from entering a dental office. You trust your Mother In Law and she did not stand in the way of the amalgam replacement. She should have on your behalf! even if she doesn't agree with it. This is not her child.

At any rate, I hope your daughter's tooth can be saved. Porcelain is an expensive but excellent material for deep cavities. My tooth, that was probably going to require root canal, wound up being "ok" (so far).

Some dentists will tell you "oh I think you'll need a root canal" but this is not always the case.

I had cerec put in and so far it's worked out really well. Hopefully I will not need any dental rework for much of the rest of my life. Saves further drilling, further trauma too! I don't eat hard food as much on that side if I can help it, it just allows that tooth a rest. If I eat too much hard stuff on that side, sometimes it can start to niggle a bit.

Anyway, best of luck with your daughter and with the Mother in law re the mercury information. If she wants to block her ears to it? So be it. Clearly she is a mess of physical complaints herself, but so often they try and excuse them as "normal".

hi guys, all the amalgam is out and i think the tooth will be okay. I didnt go in with her as i cant expose myself to dental offices so my mum took her. he actually rang me on my mobile phone saying he got all the amalgam out and thinks it will be okay, i nearly cried with joy. shes taking DMSA every 4 hrs now, 3 days a week for a few months, well then try ALA for a few months then hopefully she'l be well again. Fingers crossed! . <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/thanks.gif" alt="" /> Dawn XX

hey dawn. just wanted to say that's really good news they got the amalgam out safely. man, the fact she started getting those side effects quickly really is a testament to how poisonous that stuff really is.

i've delt with a lot of stubborn and ignorant people. it's been like the worst frustrations ever to have to deal with that crap but maybe you can diplomatically get through to her. lol i personally haven't had a very effective way of dealing with that but maybe you'll be better at it.

take care,

shawn

Hi Dawn, great news! What dentist did the job? I sure hope he did a thorough job.

What did he put in instead? Composite?

Anyway, here's hoping that she'll come back to normal very soon with some chelation.

All the best to you both. She's lucky to have a Mum like you.

that is great , I am glad that she will never have to go through what we are going through , and mercury takes along time to get into the brain and most of her exposure is very light since it was removed so quickly

Good to hear that news,Dawn.
Your daughter is blessed to have a mother like you who is so aware of all of this.
Just think of all the children who suffer those symptoms after amalgam placement & the parents, unfortunately, would never make that connection.
Well done.Good luck with the detox.

That is good news, Dawn. My thought is that you got the mercury out quickly, and one would think there is a good chance there will be no long term effects. Think about how many YEARS some of us lived with these fillings contaminating us. I hope she will be just fine.

I just want say, its hard to get a teenager to take a tablet every 4 hrs, even at night. the first round had to be stopped cos she forgot to take one on time, well keep trying though.
shes taking plenty of supplements to protect her.
Bex, the dentist i used was Dr David Harvie austin, i chose him because i know him and he does a really good job, with all protection. i think he still uses diamond crown filling material.

What a horrible story this was, but I'm glad it has a happy ending.

My 14 yr old has 3 amalgam fillings, and I had no idea when she had them put in, about the whole mercury thing. It was right before I found out what was wrong with me. I am devastated, because now that I look back, I see how her personality has changed, and she has some serious OCD symptoms, her moodiness, aches and pains (she's also a terrible hypochondriac) all since her fillings were placed.
Unfortunately, I HAVE to take care of myself first, or there's not going to be any of me left to take care of my family. One step at a time, I guess. She DOES want them removed, though, and after I go to this new dentist and get my work started, I'm going to see about getting her in.

hey dawn

just found this thread, I agree with everyone here, what an arrogant, stupid pri.ck that dentist is, as bex said the issue is NOT whether mercury is or isn't safe, it's about not him being in the position to decide about your dauughter's teeth, and downright ignoring your EXPLICIT request not to put amalgams in your child.

If it was me and my child, I would go to war with the jack.censored! You should definetely demand a refund at the very least!

let us know how chelation with your daughter progresses.

HI Dawn, you took very prompt action dentally and also on your daughter's health as well. You could not be doing any better and sounds like you got her a very good dentist. I've heard of him before.

I hope all turns out well in the end. Thank goodness she didn't spend too long with this stuff in her mouth. Hopefully she'll start to feel like her old self again soon.

I cannot believe how toxic this stuff is. I am so sick from going into that dental clinic, I can't tell if it's anaesthetic or mercury vapor I breathed in whilst there. But it's been months now and there is no improvement. I am exhausted, aching and sick daily without respite. It goes in a constant cycle of similar symptoms.

Sadly I didn't notice DMSA did much, plus the stuff costs a ridiculous amount of money too so I couldn't take it for long enough to find out whether it really would help. How can that help those of us who are in a financial bind? Again I don't understand why they don't make these things much cheaper considering the reasons we are using them!

It's an insane world.

hi bex, im sorry your still feeling so bad, its always hard to say with this illness what causes exactly what. dmsa is really expensive, it should not be that price when us sufferers rely on it, one bottle doesnt last long either, then you have to take other supplements without fail while using the dmsa. i hope you get some relief soon, dawn xx p.s, it took me a long time to feel better after getting dental treatment, but i dont know if it was mercury or anesthetic.
