If a composite filling would not have been appropriate, then at least he should have given other choices before just using an amalgam. Perhaps an inlay or onlay, perhaps Zirconium? Perhaps something else? I agree that just pushing forward with amalgam is wrong. he should have at least given you a phone call saying that composite won't work, and offered alternatives besides amalgam.
