I know there have been previous posts about this, but what are the main supplements that can help thyroid function?

I think some of my symptoms may be linked to both.

Supplements we shake out of the bottles
One of the best ways to learn what supplements to take is to see what others take, and why. Here is what my moderators and I take daily, to enhance our new health thanks to desiccated thyroid and/or adrenal support. I also include information below from others recommendations. Janie
JANIE (Labwork/Armour vs. other brands Moderator):

*high potency B-vitamins (has numerous health-giving benefits for thyroid, adrenals)
*Folic Acid (when it’s not in the above, I add it. Multiple benefits)
*one Ginger Root capsule (totally takes away my tendonitis–many benefits)
*Magnesium Citrate (helps with palps, many benefits)
*Vit E (in the form of MIXED tocopherols)
*Selenium, natural food based tablets (anti-cancer, helps conversion of T4 to T3, etc)
*Iron (to keep my Ferritin from falling below 70) I sometimes slack on this now–meno.
*5000 mg. (1 tsp) Ascorbic Acid powder stirred into watered down orange juice in bottle (to support adrenals plus MANY benefits)
*Flax oil and ground seeds in my morning yogurt
*Lugol’s iodine
*compounded Testosterone (took away my lower back pain!)
*Progesterone lotion/gel in small supportive amounts
*Indole 3 Carbinol (when estrogen dominant)
*Sea salt liberally on my food
*Zinc–I suck on a tablet with 15 mg zinc at the sign of any sore throat, every two hours and two at bedtime–and it ALWAYS knocks it out.

I now only use non-fluoride toothpaste, including those without sodium lauryl sulfate, and dip my brush with toothpaste in baking soda. I use Burt’s Bees deodorant, or just Baking soda. I use organic lotions, and will NOT buy any shampoo or soap with sodium lauryl sulfate in it. I use organic eye liner/mascara etc by Ecco Bella and BB’s. Because ANYTHING you rub into your skin goes into your body, and after time, may cause problems.

VALERIE (Adrenals Moderator):

*Co Q 10 150MG bedtime for heart
*600MG ALA for glucose control
*600MG Benfotiamine for nerve damage
*sublingual B Trio
*Sublingual B12
*Magnesium 400-600MG at bedtime for palps
*1000MG Fish oil
*2000MG Vitamin C as Emergen-C
*1/2-1 tsp Celtic Sea Salt -for adrenals, BO and overall health & detoxing
*2-4 Brewers Yeast Tablets for skin & hair & glucose

MISSY (Ferritin and Mental Health Moderator):

*B-complex “50″ with each meal

I’d start with salt, vit B’s, licorice, magnesium but you should read a little first. That book “adrenal Fatigue” by Wilson is a great place to start.

I've been taking my temperature and pulse in the mornings as per Dr. Peatfield's instructions. They are pretty low, so presumably he's going to tell me I have low thyroid function. I take many of the supplements listed above already. I guess what I'd need to add is something like Armour. Two problems there though. One, I don't see Dr. Peatfield for over a month yet, and two, I don't know if you can get Armour without a prescription -- or if I should even try it. He can't write prescriptions anyway because he is not on the GMC. I wonder what he does tell his patients to take?

Seeing that there's a problem here, I'd like to do something about it ASAP. I am a walking zombie. My daughter is having a birthday party this weekend -- she had her heart set on it and is too small to understand about mummy being ill -- and god only knows how I'm going to manage it. Step by step I guess, cleaning the house and buying and preparing food.

I would hold off on the Armour until Dr Peatfield has assessed your adrenals. Armour is powerful stuff, and if your adrenals are already weak, it can cause all sorts of problems. You would have to start off very slowly - no more than 15mg at a time and hold two weeks in between dose raises to allow the T4 time to build up in your system. Thyroid dosing is ALL about patience, even when you want to feel better in a hurry.

I started on Armour two years ago, and there has been a huge improvement in terms of energy and mood. I couldn't handle stress at all, was suicidal (especially in deepest darkest January), and would get panicky and nervy about the slightest thing. That's all gone now (except I still can't stand this time of year!) and I can go for walks etc. I still haven't found the right dose for me, as it fluctuates between winter and summer, but life is better all round.

What exactly are your temperatures Linda?

Good luck for the party - I know how daunting kid's parties can be... the best one I did involved a colouring competition, where all they did was colour for an hour (their choice). Then after the eating and present opening, it was time to go home. I was very relieved!

Also remember adrenals MUST be treated before thyroid. This point is emphasized on www.adrenalfatigue.org, www.drrind.com and www.stopthethyroidmadness.com. It's better to wait to see Dr. Peatfield, let him give you direction.

Hi Nicola,

Can I ask you where you got your Armour from? I'm just wondering how Dr. Peatfield tells people to get it.

Yes, parties . . . there are 4 little friends coming to the house. We will play a few games, have food, open presents, and hopefully that should be about it. I'm so very sluggish though. It isn't the thought of the party itself so much as the preparations, and cleaning the house. Just making myself get up to cook dinner or wash up can be hard right now.

This morning my temperature was 37.5 C and my pulse rate was 65 -- that's the lowest I've measured it, ever. I'd be glad if low thyroid explained why I feel so zombielike all the time, but it's frustrating to have to wait another month at this time of year to see the doc. I keep reaching for sugar in desperation and the withdrawal from it is nasty, plus it interferes with chelation.

The symptoms you describe are all what I am encountering now. I'm glad you don't have them anymore, I don't wish them on anybody. I'm looking forward to the day when I can say they're in my past as well.

Thanks <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" /> I'm supposed to have a phone appointment with a reiki practitioner in a quarter of an hour but he hasn't confirmed. Fingers crossed.

Hi, Linda,
sorry to hear you're not feeling so well.I don't have any advice or useful info just wanted to say that
my son is also having a birthday party this weekend.
But I have been so low on energy all week too, and he is quite under the weather too.Hopefully we'll be better by Sunday though, for the party.
We're having a pirate party in the house ,normally I would be more excited just don't have any spare energy.

Like you said one step at a time,I've been doing what I can each day to prepare & my son did alot too,we made all the decorations out of cardboard boxesetc.I am turning ultra eco-friendly and will never be responsible for a balloon again, we made treasure chests ,crocodiles,
I love parties! Don't let people put you off by saying that kids parties are daunting, I think children are content to be congregated together doing their own thing, sometimes the adults put so much pressure on themselves to have everything "perfect".
Just prioritise and keep it as simple as possible is there anyone around who could help out a bit in the preparation?
Hope you feel better and can enjoy the party.

I’d wait to see dr peatfield before any prescription meds.

How are your temps? Low and stable? Or low and unstable?

If you want to do something right away I would supplement salt. That had a dramatic effect on my temps. Gotta be quality salt. Table salt is poison. Himalayan crystal salt is what you want. Sea salt is ok but Himalayan crystal salt is significantly better. i'm on 2 tsp per day but you should start at 1/2 to 1 tsp per day.

And remember in all cases Adrenals get treated first. If you treat the thyroid and the adrenals can’t keep up………… you will crash and burn.

[color:"red"] Reiki! i like that, last time i did that i got that mega color thing....red was everywhere <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/cool.gif" alt="" /> [/color]

hi linda, it is best to wait for adrenal results before using armour. if dr peatfield says you need it, he will write to your own GP and ask to prescribe it, they may not though!
i get my armour prescribed by my GP but my case is a little different to yours.

Wow, several of us seem to have children with the same-ish birthdays. Little Shelly's party is on Sunday too. I teach groups of teenagers so you'd think I can manage a few children for an hour and a half. As I said, the daunting prospect is actually cleaning the house. I'll try to make a start today. Pirates -- sounds good! Shelly's theme is dinosaurs. She's mad about them; we ordered all this dinosaur stuff off the internet -- party hats. cups, plates, even pin-the-horn-on-the-triceratops LOL.

Sorry Dawn, you are right -- I did mean to say my temp was 36.5. This morning it was 36.2. I kept the thermometer in extra long to make sure. My pulse rate seems stable but my temp has actually been going down. Could explain why I feel cold a lot of the time, especially at night.

I will certainly accept the advice here to wait until I see Dr. Peatfield. You all know what you are doing and I don't, really. I am treating my adrenals in a sense. I take a teasoon of Himalayan sea salt every morning, liquorice tincture twice a day, ashwagandha, and relora as needed. Again, I'm open to whatever else the doc says about that.

My own GP has at least been sympathetic, even if he hasn't been able to do much himself. He's open-minded to the possibility that I'm mercury toxic from my amalgams. If Dr. Peatfield asked him to prescribe Armour, I think he would -- if he could. He's complained to me before about how the NHS restricts him in the things he can prescribe, such as when I asked him about DMSA.

Thanks for all the support here. I know I'm not alone now in the party preparations <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" />

I'm still waiting to hear about an appointment with Dr Peatfield. I already asked my GP if he would prescribe Armour, and when he said he can't I told him that he could if I am a 'named patient' but he still said no. At least he does seem open to my mercury poisoning especially as it is in my notes that I had 'Pink's Disease' at 6 months which is mercury poisoning, mine from teething powders so I am reluctant to change GP's. I am wondering whether to see an endocrinologist finding out first which one will prescribe. My Gp mentioned that he would refer me if my bloods came back showing low thyroid. Well they didn't but he might consider Dr Peatfield's advice. Well here's hoping. It's all about taking one step at a time isn't it. I feel I am really getting there now.

I got some Molybdenum and got on it a few days ago and have noticed a significant change in my sleep, I am remembering dreams ,sleeping more deeply and generally feeling more relaxed. I am amazed as none of the other supplements I have ever taken have had such an effect. Next i am going to find some B5 but want to from a non yeast source due to my candida which seems to be a little under control with diet. Things are starting to look up at last.

I'm glad to hear things are going better with you Mati. That's excellent news <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" />

I found a supplier who will send Armour to the UK, though it is dispatched from the South Pacific and could be liable to customs charges. Here is a link to their site. I will try this myself if Dr. Peatfield says I need Armour and I can't get it an other way -- or unless someone here knows another way of getting it from a UK supplier without a prescription. I suppose another option for me would be to have my parents in the US send it over.

It's easy enough to get medications that poison us isn't it. Pretty silly when we can't get what we need to heal.

Oh gosh! I hope I don't have to pay for it. As GP's can prescribe it I will make sure I will find a new one or as I said perhaps an endo. Do Sarah Myhill in Wales might be able to prescribe it, she is private and I am sure she recommends it. Google her she is on the net.

Thanks Linda
